KOS thread inspired this - Three threats to keep me on my toes

Recommended Posts

Devs, if you read this at all. My contribution to the Alpha process.

These are the three things in the game I want to see to keep me on my toes (and having fun playing):

1. Dangerous (not just annoying) zombies.

2. Dangerous environment. After all it's a zombie (SURVIVAL) game. Survival has to be there.

3. Do not in any way curtail another player's playstyle. Cheating (ie; server hopping, hacking is not a playstyle) aside.

Why you ask? Because, like Dean, I went through a survival school. There must be dilemmas at all times to keep the game interesting. I just got whacked by a zombie. My blood is low. Do I go to a  less populated area to find food or do I take a chance and loot a major area or find another person to blood bag me? Each and every decision will have to deal with the possibitly for a zombie attack or being shot in the back of the head (or to the face you sadistic KOSers). Good play should be rewarded. Bad play, well a quick ticket to the beach or elsewhere.

Dean had a vision. A really good one. It's all about dilemmas.

I think that there are already many dilemmas - what with the increasing 'crafting' abiliities, items such as pick-axes, axes, kitchen knives, matches and many other items take a moments thought as to what I want/need in my iventory, and this is an excellent and realistic dynamic of  survival.

1. I personally would rather see more player population than more zombies. This game takes the "Walking Dead" show's approach where the real danger is mankind's immorality and willingness to do whatever it takes to survive. The zombies are really just there to provide the storyline for why mankind is fighting eachother. That's why this game is so pupular. It's a general rule of thumb that people would rather play against other human players rather than A.I.

Adding substantially more players to the game would produce the very same affect that adding more and stronger zombies would in that it would encourage parternships between two complete strangers, because the danger of encountering a fresh spawn who may already be geared up is expontentially greater. And personally, I'd find it much more fun to play with more players than more zombies.

2. I'm all for a more dangerous environment. However, it can't be so dangerous that a fresh spawn only has a 1 in 10 cahnce of survival past the first few minutes. We all want this game to be more an more "survival-ish," because it's easy to survive when we've geared up. But running through a town as a freshie with stronger and more numberable zombies will make survival nearly impossible....and people will just get frustrated with this game and quit playing.

3. Ok. But as a developer, it is his responsibility to produce a product that people want to play. And if a certain playstyle begins to hurt the bottom line of profit and does more hurt than good, then changes must be made to detern such a playstyle. As a developer, he is entitled to make people play the game the way he wants it to be played. He can curtail whatever he wants if he deems it necessary to turn a higher profit and greater success. If that means some quit playing because they can't play it the way they want, that's ok so long as the result of their ceasing to play attracts more players to replace them.

Technically, it's his responsibility to produce a product that people want to buy. Current sales for DayZ suggest he's fulfilled this responsibility.

Not that I'm trying to rag on you or anything! I just see that argument twisted a lot to suggest he should listen to the players more. I fear the devs ever listening to the vocal minority (or sometimes even the vocal majority) and seeing them sell out. OP's right: it's all about dilemmas.

Nope - its included in point 2.

I agree with the OP. Challenges should arrise from just surviving in an unforgiving environment (hunger, thirst, temperature etc.), fighting off dangerous zombies (not the weak but bugged kind) and dealing with other players (killers, bandits ambiguous strangers etc.). Overall there should be more viable uses for guns than shooting other survivors - faster animals are a step in the right direction. Now buff zombie health!

One member of my team just got onehit-killed by a zombie at NWAF...that was pretty frustrating. I do have a lot more respect towards zombies now ;)
