I would like to suggest the virus be known as "The Green Mountain Virus" .

Green Mountain is just a radio station with a few military buildings inside a compound, there's no actual ingame suggestion that the infection (Not necessarily a virus, could be some sort of parasite/bacteria/fungi) had anything to do with Green Mountain other than there being people executed there.

Now, it's definitely interesting and creepy, but I'd rather the background of the infection be left ambiguous. Players can create their own story, and if they want to believe that there's some secret lab at Green Mountain, then that's perfectly fine.

But let's not just start throwing around names because Green Mountain is somewhat creepy.

I assumed it was a fungus that grew on your brain ?

After years of high-level research in secret labs and and damp abandoned garages ...

- I called it 'DZV' to have a name (not official at all). DayZ-Virus= DZV

or how about Brain Fungus Growth ?

the whole fungus idea is probably more popular because of Last of Us, however judging by the symptoms demonstrated, a fungus seems unlikely. For a fungus to have such a severe effect on animal behaviour, we would have to see some major damage to the body before you developed violent tendancies. There are fungus variaties which target the brain and control creatures, but it is extremely crude and they survive in this state for a maximum of a few hours.

However a protoctistan parasite like Toxoplasma has been shown to cause violent tendancies if the infection is widespread across the brain, and TOXOPLASMOSIS AFFECTS 1 IN 2 HUMANS!!!

My guess would be that the disease we see in Day Z is an aggresive mutation of Toxoplasma caused by nuclear radiation, deliberate engineering, mutagenic chemicals etc.

All valid points, however, I am led to believe that in the mod there was a large horde of zeds there.  Hence the idea to name it after Green Mountain.   It also does not matter if it is true or not, it can be a total red herring.  What ever it was it should have a name, don't you think?  That's how people are, totally irrational, we name stuff after the totally wrong things all the time.  Think Greenland, Iceland, the Americas named after an Italian, the Sandwich Islands, Rhodesia, the list is endless.

Captain Tripps, of all things, was the name of the super flu in The Stand, by Stephen King, had nothing to do with the disease itself.

Well, it was just a name given to it by some of the survivors, it wasn't actually the officially designated name like H1N1 is for "Swine Flu". I'm fine with the virus having a name, and people can call it whatever they want (although I do think "Green Mountain Virus" isn't the best one) but I think the lore should just keep mentions of it ambiguous. I'm fine for a fully developed background of Chernarus being created, but the whole mystery and free thought you can have should still be a dominant force, if not the predominant one.

Plus, leaving it loose, from a development standpoint, makes it a lot easier to add new things without breaking the lore. I mean, it's fiction, so you can do anything you want with it, even if it defies reality, but once you start violating your own story then it gets bad.

I kind of like not knowing. The less I know, the better the paranoia buzz.

As a guy fresh out of the ocean, I probably wouldn't have all the details as to why people are now zombies.
