  1. 1. Whats your (primary) gaming preference?

    • DIAMOND (Achiever) - I like to gear up and survive.
    • SPADE (Explorer) - I like exploring and experimenting.
    • HEART (Socializer) - I like to meet new people and make friends.
    • CLUB (Killer) - I like to fight and kill.

I am surprised nobody brough this up before (okay one did mit in a very limited fashion). There is a test about gamer psychology called Bartle Test that divides gaming preferences into four categories of "fun". Now DayZ is actually a pretty good game to experience all four of them and it would be pretty interesting to see how the community sees the game (click on "Test").

The categories are:

DIAMONDS (Achievers)
like to achieve as much as possible within the games context. In DayZ this probably translates into accumulating high value gear and keeping it as long as possible.
Possible traits*:
Weapon: AKM or M4 with attachments (as badass as possible)
Loved items: anything rare and of high value
Hate: serverhopping and weak zombies (the former makes their main goal trivial and the latter reduces the games challenge)
Wishes: more high value gear, more challenging PvE gameplay
Chance of KoS: high (out of fear of losing their gear)

SPADES (Explorers)
like to explore the game and its mechanics. In DayZ this should be straightforward: exploring the map, items and their use as well as human interactions.
Possible traits*:
Weapon: SKS (common and versatile, can add a scope)
Loved items: Binoculars, knifes and everything that can be used in one way or the other
Hate: overabundant loot, items not usable when they should (e.g. duct tape)
Wishes: more complex gameplay, more hidden and semi-random locations like the helicopter crash sites
Chance of KoS: medium (might fear gear loss or just want to test that new weapon)

HEARTS (Socializers)
like to interact with others and roleplay. In DayZ this probably translates in finding friendlies, having fun with them and making new friends.
Possible traits*:
Weapon: Magnum (looks cool and is quite easy to get)
Loved items: Clothes, road flares and everything you could use for roleplaying/doing something crazy
Hate: KoS, KoS and KoS
Wishes: more options for social interactions, more roleplay items
Chance of KoS: low (KoS is the antithesis of socializing)

CLUBS (Killers)
like to impose themselves on others. In DayZ it might translate into banditry, killing others for enjoyment or even hunting down bandits as hero.
Possible traits*:
Weapon: Mosin (good for sniping and kills in few shots)
Loved items: (para-)military gear and everything that helps in PvP encounters
Hate: randomness in combat, combat logging and no/low punishment for getting killed
Wishes: more weapons, more camouflage options, squad identification features
Chance of KoS: very high (the thrill of the hunt)

*My own impression/opinion.

TL;DR: Click on "Test". Vote according to your results. Done. ;)

I'd say Diamond/Club. I enjoy gearing up and getting everything Pristine, currently using a Tactical Vest, Mosin with LRS/PU Scope and all attachments and an MP5 with 6x 30 round mags on my body for it.

The most annoying thing for me is a bad death. I don't mind dying, unless I've died from a hacker, D-sync or another shitty way of dying.

I guess im a killer. (big surprise)

I always seek out PvP and combat anywhere i can, but more important  then just a body count, i like the clan meta-game and executing the perfectly laid trap or ambush. its about besting and out-Smarting the opposition. one of the big things i miss from the mods was the coming and going fo clans from servers to compete for total dominion (normally in the forms of helicopters, the best mil gear, and then destroyign other teams and driving them from the server, untill this very fate befalls them and so it goes.

Most hearts seem to like games with limited or regulated player killing. However, you can meet quite a few in DayZ and there are also youtube videos featuring hearts.

Truly a rare breed in DayZ

I tried taking the test on the linked website, but then it started asking me questions about my orc-killing preferences. So I sacked it.

From your descriptions, I chose 'Spades'. Good poll!

The test is set up in a more generic Fantasy-RPGish context (because most of the relevant games fit this setup) but it can be translated into DayZ as well. So this "hunting orcs" thing can be seen as "lone wolfing for gear" as "experience" roughly translates into aquired gear (and actual player experience). Sometimes its a little tricky (whats a charm wand in DayZ?) but people should be able to manage (even if they just imagine a charm wand in DayZ).

People who also play WoW etc. should have no problem answering the questions though.

My number of confirmed kills is one - and this guy probably bled out after he knocked me down (we had a melee fight). There were some people I shot and didn't know their fate though (I expect they survived, except the ones that were finished off by a mate).

All of the above: (Veteran)

Main skills: knowledge and experience

Weapon: any

Loved items: anything that offers versatility

Hate: rng (PvP) and lack of challenge (PvE)

Wishes: more complex mechanics, more challenges

Chance of KoS: high (note: only shoots if almost sure of hitting/killing the target)

Been active since the beginnings of the mod. Found every single item, shot every gun, driven every vehicle. Survived jungles in Lingor, desert of Takistan, cold nights in Namalsk. Explored every inch of Chernarus. Practiced sniping in ACE, flown helis in combat, landed planes that run out of fuel. Shared last bandage and can of food with friends. Invited strangers to his fireplace. Ended life of bambis, lone wolves, heroes, bandits, survivors and whole clans. Died many times, taking a lesson in every death.

Survivor, bandit and hero. Currently seeking thrill in PvP combat.

Ah thanks for bumping this! I tried to take the test but got interrupted and couldn't find it any more.

60% explorer, 53% killer, 47% achiever, 40% socializer.

Chance of KoS: medium (might fear gear loss or just want to test that new weapon)

That being said, I need to see for myself if the shotgun really is broken. I'd be very saddened if it was.
