An Experiment on Airfield Tunnelvisioning

Recommended Posts

So today I decided to run an experiment.

Armed with a Mosin, plenty of ammunition and a long range scope, I made my way to the NEAF and set up camp on the massive hill to the north. Laid myself down on the ground, zeroed in on the ATC tower top and made sure to do the same for the various approaches into it (ergo, the actual airstrip, the entrance to the warehouse, the fields next to it). I then left my 1/40 players server and joined a 39/40 players server.

Here are my findings:

1 - People are incredibly dumb. How dumb? Dumb enough to hear gunfire, see their friend being shot and killed, then STOP TO LOOT THEIR DEAD BODY OUT IN THE OPEN (seriously people, the hell is wrong with you?);

2 - Apparently, three dead bodies in a line = perfectly safe to run up and sit there for 2 minutes sorting ammunition (come on now, really?);

3 - It's perfectly safe to stand still, upright, in a room covered almost entirely in glass, after you were scraped by gunfire by an unknown source. It is also normal to expect any threats to come from the stairs, rather than, you know, ANYWHERE ELSE IN A 360º ANGLE (6 out of 10 subjects agree);

4 - Bushes half the size of your torso constitute complete and total cover. I can totally not see your backpack, arms, legs and Dallas Mask;

5 - Groups of 3+ can be convinced to self-destruct with a properly aimed "miss";

6 - No one bothers to check the incredibly obvious sniping overlook position;

7 - A bright purple mountain backpack amidst a sea of green constitutes perfect cover. Apparently, the Orks were right. Who knew?

8 - "Extensive perimeter search" now means "Run around like headless chickens in a 5 meter radius circle while flailing around like someone having an epileptic fit";

9 - Exchanging ammunition out in the open with someone holding an assault rifle is a wonderful idea. I actually saved ammo on that one;

10 - Common knowledge dictates that sniper fire should be responded with gunfire in random directions (protip: it worked in Sniper: Ghost Warrior. Doesn't work here)

I then left the server to both write down my findings and desperately try to figure out how I could have possibly just sit there for about 2 hours without anyone even firing close to me. For safety reasons, this experiment will not be attempted with the NWAF.

Almost everyone who plays this game play with the risk-awareness of a headless chicken. The northeast airfield merely distills them into a potent concoction of stupidity, making it even more obvious.

I swear I once saw someone actually look around while in Berezino. I was honestly not expecting people to just be so utterly blind, especially on a wide open, incredibly high-traffic area.

NEAF is for new, stupid and inexperienced players looking for a quick fix. It's unlikely you'll get the same reaction at Balota or possibly even NWAF.

Is Balota really that packed, though? Considering most of the spawn points are now focused on the E/NE area of Chernarus.

what's even funnier than that is sitting just slightly west of the neaf and waiting for them on their trek to the nwaf. all the while they talk over direct about what they looted.. like kids comparing trick or treat bags.

they set course for nwaf, hold W and blindly run.

you can stand.. almost.. out in the open and let them run to you. after the first shot they pause, when the first guy drops they scatter like mice. but that don't matter because they're running out in the open anyway...

I would suggest that everyone who goes to NEAF aren't all stupid, inexperienced noobs, but I don't think you've heard of the idea :P

My favorite it when you put a flare in a building, then go off in the distance and wait for the "OOH SHINY" crowd to approach the door. Hilarious.

Does that actually work?!

I must try this.

Besides, it's incredibly freakin' easy to to just go around to that position. I hopped merely because I forgot the zero distance and had to figure it out again.

Whenever I go there people are server hopping in one individual barracks, not even risking leaving to go to the next one before hopping.

edit:

hopped to figure out the zero distance? That's just as pathetic as people hopping to loot imo. Learn how to judge distance.

ohhh commoooon suuuuuure. u zeroed on an empty server... lol

u hopped to avoid getting shot from another sniper on the airfield.

thats all and its lame as hell...

but back to your topic...

there are ALOT of new players who dont know the real hotspots..

there are alot of bugs atm theres absolut no gunsounds over huge distances... sometimes u cant realize that someone shoot on you.. and then its too late.

Dude stop hammering on him, I found his findings very interesting, so what if he hopped from an empty server, we are all guilty of it at least once and for these research purposes why not.

Some people just don't know how to see humor in posts like this one.. sit down and relax ffs. Not EVERYONE is so serious about this game. Hey, have you guys heard of this thing, its called having fun.. I know, it's totally unheard of. You should try it some time.

EDIT: And to everyone else who finds this post as funny as me, have some beans! :D

about server hoping on NEAF... 3 months ago, I was on 4/40 server going to NEAF. In time I got from north hill to fence two players logged off. In time from fence to east jail, third player logged off, so I stayed alone on server. I quikly looted east jail, ATC tower and heded to west jail. 100 meters from jail I check player list - Im alone. I enter jail, search jail cell and when I was about to go on stairs there is guy on stairs!!! we excange few bursts, and go our seperate ways.

on topic: people can be stupid, but they are mostly greedy. I wont let go on his M4, even on price of my own life!!!

I don't know if you mean the group takes off after they're shot at, my group takes off if we're shot at and haven't a clue where its coming from. Stopping and looking around when there's no reason to stay is a terrible idea as far as we're concerned.
