My First AKM!

Recommended Posts

So, after spending an UBER long time gathering attachments for it, I FINALLY have my decked out AKM! I found it at a barrack at the NWAF. Super excited. ^-^

ATTACHMENTS:

Handguard rail

PSU scope

weapon flashlight

ATLAS bipod

(excuse my bad FPS, on a secondary rig while I get a better one. >.>)

Eh, I personally prefer the wooden handguard, myself. Nice find, though. :)

I prefer the rail guard for that sweet, sweet bipod. Thanks :D

In other news, my character almost got wiped TWICE. Relogged into some different servers, and my character was saved. (though the session was subsequently lost in around 20 seconds after loading in.)

Oh DayZ and your technological woes. How I love/hate you, for providing me with hours of fun in exchange for several heart attacks and frustrated keyboard pounding. =]

Grammar edit.

The AK is a real workhorse.  It'd probably be my first choice of rifle in the apocalypse. I need a weapon that can be dragged through mud, rain, sand, and dirt.  Those are likely the environments you're going to be moving through while fleeing hordes.

Damn right.  I keep a scope but hold it in my backpack until I'm hunting.  The stock AK with no attachments, 30-round mags, and plain wood finish is just gorgeous.

you can make an AK with handtools, and a block of steel. Very reliable gun.

Even if you were a Pashtun gunsmith from Darah Pakistan who are known to do a lot of hand operations you would still need a considerable array of hand and power tools to produce good weapons. The AK/AKM is reliable because all through the weapon the tolerances are very LOOSE and the weapon is of simple construction. Unfortunately these loose tolerances or 'Mechanical slop' causes AK pattern weapons to be quite inaccurate compared to western weapons. A  six inch group at 100 yards is pretty solid performance for a well made AKM. However putting  a scope like the PSO on an AK is a bit like putting a 44DD bra on a babe that wears a 34A bra. The weapon is essentially the  medium range gun that  Kalashnikov intended it to be.

Note: in real life the AK's dispersion pattern is about  30" at 500yards which isn't so good  compared to western assault weapons that print 10" groups at that range.

The In game performance of the AK is enhanced by an error that causes the weapon to have zero dispersion.  They need to fix that. .

AK worshipers often forget that the ironclad reliability of the gun comes at that price.

Not really a point to arguing the merits of the weapons with respect to this game, because they haven't chosen to go a hundred percent authentic. Yet.

During a serious survival situation, I'd take an M4 because I know the thing like the back of my hand.

Check the three barracks buildings at little Military Base 1300 meters due south of the South West corner of the North West Airfield HINT: DON'T FORGET TO LOOK UNDER THE BEDS. grab the weapon and then get gone as the area is getting popular.

Ja. Just went to a low pop server to walk off the airfield and get to the coast to run rescues without getting shot.

Then I got killed in a firefight with a server hopper.

Miss you, AK.

I agree 100% I'll take an M4 or M16 over an AK any day of the week in a real situation. When you consider that a military grade M4A1 or M16A2 has  an accuracy of 1.5 to 2 minutes of angle that tells me that my weapon can print a group that is 7.5 to 10 inches at 500 meters and hold a 10.5" to 14" group at 700yards and with M855A1 or SS-109 ammunition penetrate a Kevlar helmet at that range.

Another bad thing about the AK/AKM is the 7.62 x 39 is essentially a ballistic turkey and uses corrosive primers that will eat a gun alive if it isn't cleaned ASAP after firing just a few rounds.

Here, mess with this ballistics calculator  http://www.hornady.com/ballistics-resource/ballistics-calculator

Note bullet input data.:

The 123 grain 7.62 x 39 bullet has a Ballistic coefficient of  .266 and a MV of 2300fps

The  62 grain 5.56 x 45mm  SS109 bullet has a  Ballistic coefficient of  .340 and a MV of 3070fps for the M16A2  and 2950fps for the M4A1

Yes I'll choose the M16A1 or M4A1 with or without optical sights over an AKM every time.

Really, it depends on the situation I was going to be using the rifle in. For an M16/AR variant, I have to consider: can I keep this rifle clean?

In a zombie apocalypse, if I thought the AKM could withstand more rough treatment and be easier to use and repair, (not to mention how much ammunition I can find in the region I am in,) then I would probably choose it.

Now, if I were in an environment where the gun isn't going to be getting too dirty, i.e, a low humidity location where I could find ammo for it: Hells yes I'd take it.

The biggest reason I'd pick an AK over a military-grade rifle (in a real situation) is because I don't have formal military training or any familiarization with military grade equipment.  I know how to clean a rifle and I use common sense when it comes to gun safety, but other than that, I'm pretty ignorant.  I don't need an accurate rifle that can nail a quarter from 2 football fields over, because more than likely, I'm not going to know how to use it.

What I need is a rifle that won't jam up when I'm wading through a sewer tunnel fleeing from infected or a sandstorm, or whatever the case may be.  If I need to kill a zombie, I'd rather not shoot it, rather take it down quietly.  (which I use my axe more often than anything.)

In the game I carry both weapons and my AK is 100% stock except for the PSO scope that I couldn't resist putting on. My M4A1 is tricked out but of late it spends almost 100% of its time on my shoulder because of ammunition availability. I have plenty of ammo and mags for both at the moment but I haven't seen a chopper  for quite awhile (the chopper loot spawns are broken I think) so for me conservation of 5.56 is the key. I've buried four assholes that engaged me on sight with my AK and I am quite pleased with the results. However packing two rifles is a pain in the ass from a practical standpoint.  Too bad we can't make caches yet :( .

The real question is, "am I going to be shooting this rifle"

Because if so, you need a) Daily cleanings b)liberal amounts of lubricant, low humidity is actually harder on an M4 than higher.

Otherwise, the gun will not run reliably. Just the curse of direct gas.Truth is, the M4 isn't beginner friendly.

I can handle and fire an M4 already, easy.

But in an environment/region like Chernarus, I would definitely take an AKM. In a place like the US, where I could find ample ammunition and other tools to run it, I would choose an AR variant.

As it comes to sticking to what one is used to, I am a certified instructor on both the HK G3A3 and the HK G36 assault rifles.

I also used both the AK and the M4 out of interest.

I liked the AK, while the M4 and the HK G36 have somewhat of a toygun-feeling when you where used to 7.62 in the first place.

Nevertheless, they are somewhat luxurious when it comes to attaching optics, weight and ability to spread tons of rounds which you carry until then for their low weight.

Anyhow, bottom line for me is, when Zs would arise, I will be the one with the G3. I like the punch and accuracy of the 7.62x51mm on ranges up to 400m with the ironsights as well as up to 600m with the scopes. (with Zs you wont have any combat situations on more that that and they don't shoot back ;), Also this thing is quite reliable, except for in heavy mud surroundings where you spend a shitload of time with clean and oil.

I admit that thing is heavy as shit, best only for right handed users and the (only) 20 round mags are to be connected with tape (if you go for that at all for you loose accuracy with the slight tilt they give you). But still, I fell in love with that baby the moment I had the first 20 rounds out and it kept that way.

HK is a great weapons manufacturer. There is a reason why US' most elite forces use the 416. Oh and let's not forget the mp7 ;)mp7_zps96cc05a4.jpg

Daily reminder that gangster AKM is best AKM and that having a bipod on is detrimental.

It made me kinda sad, that Devs do not want to implement Sa vz.58 in the game.

I know it looks AKish, but still I think it is also different and would be good to have it!
