English direction markers?

Recommended Posts

I feel like this has probably been asked before but I didn't see it browsing the other pages. Are there any plans to render signs in english? I'm little more than looking at signs at the moment, and trying to use my phone to find translations, I have a rough idea based on multiple lives trying to run to it from spawn, which sign indicates Electro and from there I know to trek east to Cherno but it would hella help to just have a sign in english or signs in english to indicate where I am and to help me and friends meet up. I'm sure as time goes on (all of us been playing around 24hrs now) we will simply just know what the signs mean or at least be able to better navigate, but at the moment I'm risking death everytime I find a road sign and try to translate it to indicate my direction -_-

That's like the USA putting Spanish translations on everything.  Oh wait....

Or just learn the Cyrillic Alphabet. Only took a few days to be reading as fast as English.

I'm aware of alt tab but in most cases it's not really an option, with Kos people all around and zombies, and I'm open to learning the alphabet I was just curious, and it's not like putting Spanish translations it just seems that for English based servers it would be handy. As far as the landscape goes it's fairly generic country side. Again I'm sure at some point like I said it will become as easy as looking at them and roughly knowing where I am.

Online maps only help a little bit. The in game maps have helped because like I said I knew when I found Elektro and knew roughly which direction cherno was. So I'm coming around. Little by little, it just makes navigation for new players difficult if they don't read cyillic

An alternative to alt tabbing is using the steam overlay via shift tab.  This way you still have minor vision of the game, yet full sound.  I used to do this when I didn't have my second monitor, but now I don't bother at all after learning the map.

Sorry to say but Op sounds like the stereotypical American as the world sees them. It's like when I watch The Amazing Race and they are running around in foreign countries complaining that no one speaks English. Not meant to be an attack to you but just the first thought that comes to my mind being a Canadian in New Zealand. :)

Back to the question. I find that instead of alt/tab or steam overlay I have my ipad beside me or my s4. Each has several apps with a map or if you don't want to use the map they also have the words of every city in both languages. You can scroll though the names until you find the correct one and then read it in English.

I use iZurvive for the map but the free version of DayZ Central SA also has a crafting guide so you can quickly look up how to make a splint or what ammo goes with what gun. I think you can only get that one on Android though so far.

Don't take it as an insult considering I'm Irish, and that would indeed put a damper on thing if it's only for android, though I might have an old android laying around. My question was more about localization than anything it's not unusual for developers to use this method, for example many WWII shooters in Germany are skinned with iron crosses rather than swastikas. And yes I realize that the over all game is attempting to mimic a real survival scenario in which I'd be jacked in a real life scenario should I wash up on a Russian island Id have to find a translation guide etcetera. But I shall look for said apps. Also a point I should have made earlier is that on the in-game maps they seem to use a different alphabet for locations. Mind you I've yet to find a map that was for my area ie: NW area map I foun in Elektro so I could e wrong there

This is a rather bad comparison. The display and/or usage of the swastika is for other reasons than historical documentations or movies not allowed by law. Foreign companies just show their respect for the German law compared to some countries we even called friends. But that is another tale.

Only babies use an online map. Either learn the map or get the Russian Learning book in game and teach yourself Russian.

People whine about there being nothing to do in this game. Explore! Don't use 3rd party things like DayZ DB or Skype, come on guys. You're missing out on so many amazing opportunities and adventures.

My apologies I was unaware that was a Law thing. I just always assumed it was a respect thing. Wasn't trying to offend anyone.

I don't use online maps really, and I have not seen a Russian Language guide in game but at least i know to look out for it now. I'm also hoping there is a Full map findable in game? trying to swap maps when I'm in between locations gets old because of the loads. Is there a way to tape maps together?

Is there a way to tape maps together?

Yup!

SW + NW = W

SE + NE = E

 W + E = Entire Map

or

NW + NE = N

SW + SE = S

S + N = Entire Map

Yeah i think English signs wouldn't seem right in Chernarus.

It takes time to understand where you are but you'll get it eventually

I've pretty much figured it out lol as long as I can stumble on Elektro. The sun needs fixing though. I'm a confident outdoorsman irl (or at least I thought I was til the sun issue!) I was just curious about localization

there are just a few letters in cyrillic that don't appear in the 'western' alphabet.

You look them up find out how to pronounce them, and write them on a paper

then say the roadsign out loud like you're learning to read, and suddenly you get it

for instance, the letter that lookes like a capital " B ", is pronounced more like " v "

the letter that looks like a " p " is pronounced more like " r "

so if it looks like "KoMapoBo" it says 'Komarovo'

try it .. and put a couple more of odd looking letters on your list, you got it made.

I'm saying - the roadsigns are NOT written in "a foreign language" the name of a place is the same in any language. learn to pronounce the few letters you don't have in the western european alphabet.. then you can read the placename..

adds fun to the game

don't get shot while you're standing in front of a signpost

I think my biggest issue pilgrim is that the in game maps seem to be written more in "western" that the road signs. Having not died every time I turn left today I've become more comfortable with the layout of the world and relied less on road signs and more on memory of spawn to point A (generally being the outskirts of Elektro since 9-10 lives I've spawned on the beach) then navigating from there to areas I know to be less populated. Also I understand this is an alpha and I have to bear with the oddities for the moment as I swear I've ran past a sign only to run past the same sign again further down the road? But I don't pay that much attention so I might be wrong.

And again this post has helped a lot because I now know I can connect in game maps, I know now there is a book in game to help me learn the language etc. Yes I admit I'm spoiled because I'm used to localization. But the more time I spend in game the more I come to enjoy it because of te lack of localization the role player in me gets more mental exercise because it's like I'm actually trapped on a exotic Island and have to adapt! So yay go me for expanding my horizons

yes - this is all part of the game. I know my way around pretty well now - but in the past I have been shot while I was standing in front of a roadsign outside a little village, trying to work out what it said... like a tourist, like a crazy foreigner.. "thats a TH and that's a Z and " - bang

.. someone mlust have laughed about that.

But this is realistic, right ? If you have a couple of navigation techniques, to know which way is south, and you have just a slight idea of the map in your head.. then you can go anywhere, and sometimes you make mistakes and get turned around, turn up where you didn't expect. And this happens all the time in reality, specially in stress/warfare/survival situations

I dont use a map ingame.. but when I  log out Iknow roughly where I am, and after Im out of the game I look at a map.. decide what I aim to do next session.. "if I head south and keep the road on my right I get to Vybor, then cross, go west and head to the forest, try to avid the open country.. will be a strong risk of players moving up to NWAF around there, keep in cover as much as poss.. when I'm far west I can look at the villages and move south again "

then when I play again I have an idea of where I'm going and what to expect. I dont look at the map from in the game (unless I have one ingame) and if I forget the directions, too bad. I think this is fair play. For me, its ONE MORE part of the fun.

And damn; when I get to safer ground, I look down on a village from off under the edge of the forest, and I notice how good the trees and leaves are, and sometimes there is a spectacular sky - and thats part of the game too, in the middle of all the killing and mistrust and zombies. Someone should have an award for the graphics, the countryside in this game.

Taking pieces of paper (just by my keyboard) counts as fair play too. If you want you can write down the names of the main towns, or 'towns to navigate by' and draw the cyrillic name with them, so you can compare by sight in the game. That seems to me ok too, and I have "I am friendly" written in different languages, in case I meet people I cant understand. Because I'm located in france, there is a good chance of meeting easter european players, dutch, germans, nordics, also even players from as far as ukrane or from arab countries. To me this is all cool and part of the game.

PvP is great but if you do it without all the rest it makes the game smaller, and why limit yourself.. spending a day without seeing one player anywhere, can be  great too.. you can really explore..

I like even the glitches, they save you from being complacent, I like it being "rough" odd things save you from having too much gear and being stuck with nothing "happening".. if a ladder kills you - well, hell, it was a rusty ladder.. and old houses are dangerous.. why complain.. half the world is zombies or dead, and you broke your leg.. its a good game experience. Or if you die suddenly, then join the 'Jesus with No Pants' people, for a change (but not for long?). I guess in a real apocalypse they would be around too..

whatever happens to you is part of the game, and this game is WIDE enough so that many things can happen, and you can make whole different games for yourself. If you look around the forum you will find many threads on exploring, and navigation, survival hints, direction finding, other players experiences when they are NOT pvp-ing. ... Enjoy.

I like you pilgrim lol. I just wish I could find more non-pvp players. I was excited today to be on a server that was highly populated and not see a soul. Granted I was very careful to listen to my surroundings as I almost always play with head phones on so I have a better idea which direction sound is coming from. But my experience wasn't ruined at all by not seeing anyone even the navigation mishap(thought I was headed northwest when I was actually headed south east) made for a pleasant day, hunted my first boar, discovered what I thought had been matches to light a fire with was .22 ammo lol. A good die to survive indeed

If you cant read it (i struggle too, although you do start to recognise the words even if you cant pronounce them in russian) then look at the layout of the town, roads, size of town, nearby landmarks. Makes things fairly easy. Edited by NinjaTurkey
