Searching for the 1000 m shot with the RV1 RDS Optics package

Recommended Posts

I can't seem to hit the side of a cathedral with my acog so I've been practising with the RV1 RDS Optics. Trying to set up a shot over 500 m is a challenge, finding 1000 m one may well be impossible. This is the with the M4 with mp stock and hand grip, with the bipod deployed, laying prone.

Out of the corner of my eye I catch a black speck in the otherwise clear field in the distance, circled at the end of the red line near the centre of the image.

An estimate of the locations on the map and distance:

As seen through the binoculars:

Same sight line through the ACOG:

Lining up with the RV1 RDS:

After 4 shots with a 1-2 second pause between shots I think I see him go down so I confirmed with the binoculars.

You should try using the rangefinder on the acog. That's why it's there

You can take these stationary shots easily if you have a bipod active. That gives most M4s builds nospread.

Fun fax: The muzzle velocity of 5.56 in-game is around 840 m/s. It slows down over time due to air friction.

To rangefind with the ACOG, drape the line that fits best across the victim's shoulders and read the number. It's pretty accurate.

Nice shot

thanks!

Looks 'shopped to me.

lol - well if you're comfortable with that assumption I have nothing to lose. ;)

I can't get it to work for me. Believe me I wish I could get repeatable results. With the RDS, if they're within 500 m, I can usually drop them the first shot.

I understand the bar concept. Are you saying use it to find the range, page up to match, fire using the line that's closest to the shoulders? I can never seem to score a hit from more than 400 m out. Yet with the RDS, as long as the red dot is on center mass, they'll go down.

Is that FXAA, your game looks awful.

I've had this box for 6 years, I'm happy I can still run most stuff. If you wanna donate a new card I'll only post pretty highres shots from then on.

lol how is it supposed to work when you can change FOV anytime? Range finder is a joke in DayZ. It will never work. Same with PSO scope. Even at default FOV it is bullshit.

Until the FOV is locked for scopes the RF is useless.

Nah I zero to 100 meters and leave it there. Then do the shoulder draping bit, then take that vertical line-horizontal line intersection (makes a nice cross hair) and then put said cross hair center mass for the first shot. From where that shot lands on their torso you can quickly adjust for follow up shots

It's not rocket science. Just use the lines to rangefind, set the correct zeroing and aim with the center cross like you normally aim with.

I can shoot zombies at practically any spotting range with the bipod. You can turn down your FoV with the ACOG to improve sight picture.

Please explain to me how equally increasing the width of both the target and the rangefinder with an increased FOV makes the acog "bullshit"

Do you understand why the PSO doesn't work with increased FOV or are you just angrily babbling on about something you heard someone else say?

Ahh, see I always use the associate cross with whatever range they're at. I'll try zeroing and using the centre cross.

So in theory you could range them, set the zero, use the centre cross, or

leave at default zeroing (200m I think), range them, and use the cross that aligns with the range?

The ACOG still works with modified FoV from what I can tell. If not, you can set the dayz config file to read only and your FoV will reset to default every time you access the settings.

Dunno, never tried it. If shooting with no adjustment works you probably have to dial the zeroing to 100m.

No it's not the res, it's the aliasing. Try turning off fxaa (sharp filter) and see how that looks, personally I think the game looks better with no aa rather than that crappy fxaa. MSAA is good is you can run it.

This thread captures all that's wrong with DayZ weapon modelling.

Adding a bipod to a 3 MOA 5.56 NATO carbine turns it into something that will out-perform an M24. Without actually using the bipod to shoot.

Well done, this game now has the same ballistic realism as World Of Tanks.

What makes you think you hit the zombie ?

for all we know the zombie just despawned or some other janky mess.

Cool thank you, I'll try that.

I was using the bipod, I went prone to shoot.

You can make out a little movement when one drops, the absence of a collection of black pixles. I've been at this awhile trying to get a 1000 m shot.

This one's a little more obvious.

Red dot is on his feet.

Probably less realistic than WoD, if we're honest.

Zombies dont despawn unless they are dead.

true, but they can and will start running toward you. They might stop halfway to you though

Ugh.. lost a drive on a raid 0 array, reinstalling from steam right now. Are characters server based?

They seem to drop dead after tiring themselves out. I tried luring a couple into a field for screenshots and they both decided to take a dirt nap after 5-600m or so.

i thought m4 bullets do almost no damage past 400 meters (in DayZ, mind you xD)
