We need more community involvment! Official "Private" Servers?

Recommended Posts

So, we all know that this freakin' main hive thing causes utter destruction to all gameplay elements of DayZ SA. There is no need to argue that this character server hop bullshit is just contraproductive. I am not here to discuss it, there is simply no need because it's obvious and from a game design perspective the choice of having dynamic character positions (connected servers) is just stupid, in terms of what the game tries to be.

My question:

I highly doubt that it's hard to implement servers that do have persistent characters (so you cannot join with a character from another server), my question is, why do the developers wait? We all know that in the end almost all servers will turn into private one, as in the mod. Alright, we don't know, but it's a very reasonable prediction. So why do they force us to play this bullsh*t "let's go and loot EVERYTHING because we can switch the servers". The server hopping thing will never end, there is just no way to solve it. Who cares about 5 minutes waiting? Seriously, who cares about 15 mins waiting? If someone wants the best weapon, he will go north and hopp servers, go loot empty ones so nobody can kill him. This destroys everything.

My problem with all this is, that the developers think  "Let's just wait until we add modding and people will figure it out themselves". That's so stupid in my opinion. I don't want to play on servers with 10.000 cars or M4s everywhere, I want official support for "private" hives (hives with non transverable characters).

It cannot be hard to implement, unless the developers really screwed up the workline from the beginning. It's a days work, ok maybe a week. We all know and see the cons of having a main hive. Don't get me wrong, a main hive is a good idea, because you need to controll loot spawns and such, but why the character swaping? Why not have servers, or alteast the option, that do not connect to all the server hopping crap?

And the other thing is, the developers optimize the whole game around this connected servers bullcrap (can't stress that enough) and then, when they allow server to decide to do whatever they won't, there won't be any server left with the connected server bullcrap, simply because it's bullcrap. Sure, I don't have any evidence for this claim, but this game is alpha, the developers could put the files out there and see for themselves if non-connected servers are more popular. If so, they should support it. Why do all the work now, if you are probably working TOWARDS the problem and not against it?

I want a persistent server, with persistent players and persistent loot. Let's look at endgame: We probably will be able to have bases in the end. So when my clan builds a base, there is a chance that a 15 person clan just joins the server and destroys everything we worked for. We could've been honest players, but these guys could be server hoppers who just switch servers until they find the best weapons. Same with helicrashes, cars, basicly everything.

The worst thing, and there is no way you can change that in a proper way, are empty servers. So everyone can build a tent on an empty server and just store everything there, with a almost zero chance of ever being spottet. He can store everything, he can us cars on the empty server to drive around, and if needed he switches the servers and does whatever he wants.

All this connected server bullshit is ridicilous, it didn't work with DayZ Mod and it won't work in SA, I guarantee it.

And even if I am wrong, this is just too important for the game to be just discussed. We need actuall evidence. We need them to test it. Like I said, that's what an ALPHA is there for. Better test it now, than regret it later, because some Dean Hall thought that he knew better.

What are they waiting for? The sooner they know, the better. They should focus on the very core elements of the game, before they start to optimize something, that in the end maybe doesn't even need optimization, because it's freakin removed from the game.

So again, why are they working so much against the community and not like other very good indie developers, that actually use the alpha state to test things out?

Do not worry Private hives are coming and along with private hives a fix to most of dayzs biggest problems.

Combat logging diminished

Ghosting eliminated

Server Hopping gone

Most people will leave the public hive once privates come up.

Public hive is just fundamentally flawed one character per serer should have been in from the very beginning.

Is there any date they are planning to release it? Why don't they do it right now? Delay something thats fundamental and really easy to implement... I don't get it.

Because....... ALPHA

We are here to test.  Not have our own personal servers yet.

This is the thing that kills the DayZ in the end if they don't take this seriously. One big hive didn't work in the mod so there's no way that it will work in standalone. They don't need to bring smaller hives yet because of alpha but when beta hits it should be addressed. Private hives aren't the solution either, it's just a lazy workaround. There needs to be a way to get the standard gaming experience and private hives pretty much destroyed that in the mod because the server list was cluttered with easy modes.

Smaller hives greates more potential in many ways to improve perma death, base builds etc.

So I pretty much agree with Wayze.

Read my post, I was not talking about personal servers (which exist right know, btw), but about servers that are not connected to each other. And your point is kind of weird, because yes ALPHA and that's why they should add it in right now to see if it works, you know? Because ALPHA, that's what ALPHA is for. You want to have the core of the game done before you add f*cking animals, because ALPHA and because servers are one of the most fundamental part of the mechanics. And like I said, it wouldn't be hard to implement unless they don't know how to develope a game, and you know ALPHA and stuff. That's why we need it right now, it's top priority and ALPHA is there to test things.

I disagree. We don't even need private hives. We just need servers that are not connected to each other. No easy mode. Just having the official servers set to have non switchable characters. Smaller hive results in the same problems as before, just in a smaller amount. There is no need for servers transfer.

And yet again I disagree with you saying it's too soon to implement it. Beta is in a year or so, this issue is a core element and needs to be adresse ASAP. And like I said, I cannot stress enough how easy it would be to actually implement something like that. One week and you got it, the developers just don't want to have non connected servers... as Dean once said, he wants to avoid non-connected servers.

Wayze, I agree with you but it's because it's alpha that they don't.  I personally don't get or understand why they use the hive system to begin with.  I pay good money to rent a server and it sucks knowing that people might not join it until they hop 20 other servers to get gear only to come pvp on mine.

You cannot excuse it with alpha. Like I said, it's a core element and it's done within a day or so. Seriously, there is no reason why they don't do it, "It's alpha" isn't an excuse for everything. And as far as I know Dean has no plans about implementing non connected official servers whatsoever. Why would he go through all the server hopping trouble if he could fix it within a week max.

Alpha is the excuse and will stay the excuse.  Again we are here to test the bloody game and not play on our own personal playground.  Hell, I'll be surprised if they even have separate hives come beta.  Mr. Hall has already stated that he supports server hopping just by his comment about having parts for vehicles strewn across multiple servers connected to a hive.  That's just plain wrong and very stupid to do.  Hell, the fact that they even allow server rentals in an Alpha state is mind boggling.

Yeah I'm not against one character per server either. That would be 1000 times better than one hive that is connected to every server. Some official servers and strict rule set is needed or the mod will happen.

One Char per server could be a mess too. If the server is down, you have to start over unwillingly and without your own fault. Currently some servers seem to crumble from excessive duping, being unresponsive for hours.

I also fear that the power of admins to tweak server specific stuff (like loot, vehicles or zombies) will make most servers unenjoyable and seperate the community. A few months ago, the members of this forum feared that the Standalone might die out to mods, just like DayZMod did to submods. And everyone who has played some battlefield games knows that its all good and well at gamerelease, where the admins cannot tweak servers, but then that communitypack gets released, and suddenly you have a thousands of Tickets, unenterable zones to prevent baserapes and all kinds of other stuff that was not intended by the devs. It took ages to find a decent server for a group of 5.

I can already smell private hives disallowing pvp. But I also look forward to the benefits of private hives. Whitelisting and not as overloaded central hives that manage all loot, admins capable of banning cheaters and more.

How is that a big deal ?

Average lifespan of a character is what ? a few hours ?

You lose your character whoopdi doo start over.

Yea I see your point, but its still inconvenient xD My other points worry me more :D

Also...a few hours? Depends sir. Back in Dayzero there was stats how long your char lived. It happened not often but not rarely that our characters lived 18 hours or so. And yea they did battle, at the NWA, Stary Sobor, Green Mountain....well, I guess thats still a tiny minority of players.

Well, the current lifespan is a few hours. However, some players hope we have skills and bases and persistent space shuttles and things like that. If they log in and their server is unresponsive, then they will have no choice but to erupt like a volcano, spewing molten feelings all over these very forums.

Patience, they'll be here in due time. But for now, the devs have decided the best way to test in the Alpha is to take the official hive approach.

It looks like they are testing it. Most of the experimental servers are private hives and not public.

*Blinks eyes* Ummm you need a hive....in order to store the data.  You are making no sense what-so-ever. Also, no it's not that simple. :P

Uh, I probably have 30-40 hours of game time with my current 3pp character. My HC one I use as a deathmatch guy, so he dies quicker, but I still probably average 5-10 hours for them.

exactly...

how is having to start over due to your server of choice being down, and getting K0S'd out of the blue for the 10,000th time ?

ummm nothing... as mentioned above, just login and start over, no biggie..

Until they announce they started working on mod support and private hive, you should consider that it will never happen.

I do not see any of this happening before the game goes gold, aka, before it is finished because both these features, while satisfying a small (yet extremely vocal) minority, would work directly against the development of the game.

Both were in the road map and WI probably be in before even vehicles get added.

Same here,1 charachter per server like back in the mod should be the ideal course of action.

None likes the current system, almost none supports it.

And i have the impression Rocket said, that the team have already made their preperations

around this system and have no intention of removing it.So basicly we are stuck with it.

Server hopping shitheads ruin the game. Not only are military spawns now on the coast - you know, cuz YOLO - but Billy-shit-for-brains can just swap servers and ger geared to the teeth and proceed to slauguter noobies.

Main hive - cool idea, doesn't work. The faster we get private servers with ACTUAL ADMIN TOOLS (currently it's an absolute joke), the better for the game and the commumity.

Well I think a lot features are controlled through manipulation and tweaks to the central database (hive)...I'd assume if the db's split it might be an issue to make changes to the hive that would be tested immediately by a large set of servers. Could be an issue in "pushing updates" to private servers, depending on how the private hive would be hosted (seperate hosted db vs. segmented central db for private hives)...certainly would add complexity in how database side changes are implemented.

I dunno, just speculating.

At the moment characters and data are all saved on a central hive backed up and saved in bohemia servers, rental servers only provide the world and resources to support that world; this means if there is a problem bohemia can get your steam ID find your character and examine it, gathering data about that problem and why it occured, fix it, and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Enter the private hive: character data provided and stored by the server provider. For the sake of argument let's assume you don't immediately see the problem here. Since this data is stored by the private company, bohemia can still pull your character, but it will be a different character without any issues. Oh you found a bug that completely breaks the game and unable to do anything, causing you to blue screen upon loading that character? Sorry, your character on our servers are fine and we can't see anything wrong with it, you must be creating a false bug report caused by your system or something, dismissed, that bug won't be fixed because A: crucial information that a video or screenshots can provide is missing and B: we can't be sure you didn't fake the entire thing for attention.
