DayZ in 2012 vs Now, and why DayZ was so much more fun for me in 2012. Tl;dr at bottom

Correction, it was posted 4½ months ago. And we now have camping and hunting gear. Constructing buildings from scratch will most likely (and should not) be in the game. And most importantly (because I suspect many mod players dissapointed by the SA are unawarely experiencing this), you just have to face it, you will never regain the mystery of the first months of playing the mod, it simply has to do with those "first time" experiences. If a mod player wanted to relive some of that, they should not do early access of SA, but instead wait until full release.

You are correct. I totally wrote this comment on my morning commute. I don't know how I thought it was almost 6 months. Ok, almost 5 months. :)

Camping gear doesn't work. Hunting is super lame. Building completely new structures from scratch is a horrible idea. Leave it at tents or force players to carry every single stone.

And yes, I should not have played DayZ until beta, at least. 10 months of progress with very little change in gameplay. Horrible.

Edit: My expectations are horrible, I mean. I should have expected much less. Game development can be difficult at times.

I don't agree with everything.

Firing a gun was a huge risk because of other players, not zombies. There were plenty of zeds but they couldn't hit you if you were sprinting, you could easily loose them if you run through bushes or pine trees. Zeds could only walk inside of building and pathfinding wasn't good, that meant that even with ~40 zeds on your ass you could run through a building and leve all of them behind.

Melee was horrible and unreliable but it's not any different in SA but I do consider zeds now a bigger thread than they used to be in the mod (no talking about latest version of the mod which is fubar).

Just because you were clueless at first doesn't mean there was mystery.

There was no base building in the mod and it worked fine with just tents and cars.

Yeah mod was (is?) better. Buggy Arma 2 engine was 10x better than what we have now. Guns actually worked, zeds kinda worked, vehicles mostly worked (dem ATVs tho), so even with little content you could still dick around, shoot some people/zeds and have fun.

Imagine rolling up to a small town, say Myshkino (my favorite one!). It's dusk, sun's going down. You're walking along a desolate logging road and come across an unmanned roadblock, a spraypainted sign reads "STAY OUT OR BE SHOT." You, being an intrepid survivor, go on anyway. You eventually come to Myshkino, which has been walled off and secured by a party of bandits.

What would you do? Would you try and infiltrate and steal their supplies? Would you try and get in touch with other survivors for an assault? Would you try the unwise route and attempt to barter/negotiate with them?

Giving players the power to influence the landscape of DayZ, is essential in my opinion. And I don't see that being possible without being able to actually control territory.

This is an older post, but I had to quote this. This is excellent!

Not to mention stuff is being added ALL the time, including new places on the map. Almost every major version of the alpha has added a new town, or key location, or whatever and many of them are in out-of-the-way places that are worth exploring for their scenery alone. I suspect that many players who are "bored" or "did everything already" aren't really trying very hard to find something new to do. Me? I've been EVERYWHERE... and I'll continue exploring undeveloped areas from now until they stop making map changes.

Camping in general will be greatly improved as they continue to work on the functionality of the items involved (and continue to add new things, like the camo tent). As for hunting, how would you go about improving it? As of right now, it's kind of basic, but so is hunting in real life. What can you do in real life that you can't do in the game? Animals are where you would expect them to be, killing them is similar to real life (with the exception of limited AI), harvesting them results in predictable items, and the harvested items are used in a predictable and realistic way. They could make it a little more difficult, sure, but if the current build of 0.50 is any indication, you won't want animals to be harder to kill. They're one of the best sources of food right now if you've got the tools to skin one.

Firing a gun was a huge risk because of other players, not zombies.

...and that still holds true today. It's still a huge risk if you're in a high traffic area. I never, ever kill zombies with a gun if I have an acceptable melee alternative that's quieter because I don't want to risk revealing my position to other people.

Well, I would actually like to have to track an animal quietly to kill it. Almost like a mini-game. Not harder, I just don't think I should be able to run up on a deer and kill it with an axe. If I fire at a deer and I miss completely it should run faaaaar away. If I wound it, it should still try to run away, just at a slower pace.

Sorry for being so negative without giving actual feedback.

I support the idea of building a base. However, you can't build something from the ground up. You can only board up an already existing building.

This is the only part on here I don't agree with. I think there should be the option to build bases out in the wilderness. They would have to be really makeshift of course, but I don't think that means they couldn't be big, and really cool looking.

You are assuming I fire in full auto?

The game makes it so that a 2-round burst in full-auto is super inaccurate compared to a 1-round semi-auto shot. This makes no sense. When a guy is fired in a burst, or fully automatic, it will fire rounds the same way it will in semi-auto. It doesn't make them curve magically, just because its full-auto. The only reason semi-auto is used for accuracy in real life is due to the fact that it can be difficult to control fully automatic, which is why burst fire is popular as it is easier to control and puts 3 rounds or so down range in one, accurate burst...

The weapons aren't fine.

Imma just say as a shooter that is completely false.

A gun firing in full auto is always inferior in accuracy to the same gun in semi with a substantial break between shots which is always inferior to the same gun in bolt action. It's to do with stuff like the bolt carrier not quite being in battery in the same way after each shot in auto fire as it constantly moving etc and the barrel heating up faster ---> metal expansion ---> more inconsistencies ----> worse accuracy. Imean the difference isn't giant between semi and auto in terms of mechanical accuracy but it's fairly substantial and once you chuck recoil in there even a two round burst will be much more inaccurate (gun moves between first and second shot, leading to poor group) than a single shot (though it's worth mentioning the first shot will be the same as a single shot in semi).

I mean that's all heavily simplified and it affects accuracy in other ways too but you get the idea :).

However, I do agree, contrary to what day z would have you believe, at 100m a military m4 is pretty dead on, not all over the place
