So I've been aiming strictly with the center dot lately...

Recommended Posts

...and I'm blown away by its accuracy (no pun intended). Aiming down the sights is so clunky, not to mention the current issues with blurriness when post-processing is enabled. Using the center dot to aim, however, makes the game feel like Counter-Strike and is far too accurate, even while zoomed in.

Weren't they supposed to remove the center dot? In its current implementation there's little reason to use the iron sights. I seem to recall the center dot being fairly inaccurate when I first started playing. Did they change this recently?

Anyway, how many of you use the center dot instead of iron sights?

Depends on the situation... Center dot in 3rd person mode SUCKS, but that's due to third person perspective. In 1st person mode it's fairly accurate in close -> medium range, but anything beyond 100m or so is going to start getting sketchy. Likewise, aiming down sites is very clunky (as you said) in close range fire fights, as it doesn't turn fast enough and narrows your perspective, but it's better for long range engagements. Personally, I like the way Vanilla Mod's crosshair works.

:beans: Agreed, unsure about the dots future in SA.  I would prefer it be removed completely.

I shot and killed a sprinting survivor at 500 meters with the mod's crosshair a few days ago... too precise is putting it lightly.

It will be removed. Rocket was talking about it, iirc on a sacriel stream.

Well, it can happen for sure.. If you're crouching/prone or just standing still and paying attention to where the center-dot is between the 2 rails, and you aim ahead accordingly and compensate for bullet drop, I don't think that's too unrealistic.. I'd say you just made a really good shot, which is understandable considering your experience with the mod.

Havent tried this yet, I usually ADS out of habit. Might give it a try sometime and see :)

I too hope its taken out completely, its not hard to guess where centre screen is, and for the nabs theres always a triangle of post it note (not my idea saw it on the forums lol) :)

Meh. Place those crosshairs as you would sights and you get the same result. ARMA 2 system is extremely precise. With the ARMA 2 crosshairs there's little advantage to using your sights (and very often only disadvantages to using them), it hits to point of aim and it sways with the gun.

I kinda like ARMA 3's crosshairs. They are relatively unobtrusive, they look neat and tidy, and they don't sway with the gun so you never know quite where the bullet will end up unless you use your sights.

I don't like the dot.

Snip

I agree on the arma 3 crosshairs, much better. or you can get rid of them entirely, then the only problem becomes grabbing things in 3pp. Although if the gun is perfectly accurate like say, killing floor's pistols at a few meters, then you have the problem of shooters like me who just build that FEEL of when to shoot and can headshot from the hip even with a sniper in a crowd. (it is really rewarding to headshot with weapons that aren't really MEANT to though, and it rewards skill and instincts, however in games with PvP it then becomes punishment for new players who will die 20-30 times like this and quit)

I don't want any cross hair.

I also want some free aim to be added and have weapon attachments reduce the free aim.

This simple mechanic would give attachments value without resorting to unrealistic measures.

Removed cross hair +  Forced free aim +  weapon parts affecting the handling thus reducing the free aim

Perfect realistic approach to fixing some of the gameplay.

I swear to god Rocket said, not too long ago, that it'd be removed. Pretty unequivocally IIRC.

Can live with it either way, but I don't like any type of HUD items.

I'd prefer they make picking up items less of an unintelligible chore before removing it, but we'll see.

Fallout has this same problem due to 3pp being offset weird in new vegas, it is such a chore to grab items in 3rd person. As for the HUD, I'd love for it to be fully customizable to be as intrusive as you want it to be, or as minimal as you want it to be just like the mods in skyrim and fallout allow.

FYI - I just checked in a server not too long ago.. Was using an M4 with a RDS, and aiming at the door of the police station from about 10-15 meters away.. In first person only using the crosshair/dot, I aimed directly at the doorknob, and then aimed down sights with my RDS, and found that the crosshair was off to the left, and down from the doorknob.

Thus - The 1st person dot and the "down sights" crosshair are off significantly.

Perhaps its good for an item to take 1 or 2 seconds more to pick up.

I absolutely loathe the stupid TAB + move around near shit and it magically lets you pick it up method.

TAB easy access menu is one of the worst things in dayz such an unrealistic and stupid feature full access to your inventory no matter what the condition is, sprinting, walking, running, jogging, middle of combat, ooo no problem .

They need to bring back a inventory searching animation and bring forth more realism.

I cringed a little because this past update made the dot less effective.

Because things in your hands sway and turn slower than your character, the dot is no longer representative of where you're actually aiming. Furthermore, firing also kicks the gun itself and unaligns with the 1PP dot. It might be fine if you're firing non-rapidly, but this means it affects the M4 the most. Firing the M4 in auto kicks the gun way to the left so you cannot really aim with the dot.

I actually use the red dot now. I used to be able to scope in at ranges with the ACOG and shoot close quarters with the dot. Not really applicable anymore.

They do, but first they need to increase the "pick up range" on things- even if just a little. then make you scrollwheel > gear like in the mod and use your gear screen to do it; right now some loot spawns in such a way that actualy getting the option alone is really fidigity, and thats not good at all.

Big fan of OFP/ArmA's unique virtual crosshair.

But whether you use sights, scope or UI crosshair, you always have to consider your weapons probabilities, zeroing and distance to target. Little sad to see ArmA 3 embrace the standard Counter Strike crosshair.

The dot is still bang-on accurate. I've been testing it with every gun for the last two days, and I'd say the M4 and SKS are the most accurate with it. I've been spraying with it in buildings, and picking people off with it at range. I killed two gentlemen who were looting the top of the ATC last night while I was behind the hangar at NEAF just by zooming via holding right-click with the M4.

Furthermore, when using pistols, it's more accurate to use the dot than it is the iron sights at anything more than 20m.

I like the dot.  Trying to pick up items without the dot would only add to the general awkwardness of the game.

ArmA 3 crosshair is good. People who claim no crosshair is the most realistic option haven't tried shooting guns IRL without aiming down sights -- or haven't practiced it enough. You know a lot better where your bullets are going to hit IRL even without aiming down the sights than you do in a video game with no crosshair.

Exactly, this is how people can hit things with primitive bows, blowguns, shotguns - point shooting. They just need to strike the right balance with a well-designed crosshair.

No, this is a game first and foremost. And games are only as good as the fluidity of their UI. The issue now, is that picking up items is wholly inconsistent, and the dot is the only point of reference.

I don't want to have to be moving my view around aimlessly just to pick up a can opener or an apple which I can blatantly see with the naked eye. The "boxes" for selecting items need to be made larger, as to allow easy picking up of items. So until they do that, I'm willing to entertain the idea of a HUD reticle.

I'm all for a "pickup" animation, but just making it take longer isn't the goal. Making it self-explanatory, rather than searching around in the proverbial dark for an item which can blatantly be seen with the naked eye, is the goal.

As for the inventory (a different issue entirely), I think they need to just remove the "vicinity" mechanic ONCE they've made natural pickups consistent. It's a good stop-gap for alpha whilst items clip through floors and have ridiculously unintuitive/narrow select radii.

I don't mind an animation, though there never was an animation for entering the inventory. And you could move whilst in the inventory in the mod, just not very far. Honestly, with all the emphasis on the inventory, the game isn't ready to minimize it. Reloading individual rounds needs to be gone before that can even be thought of. That and one's "inventory" is composed of multiple items (backpacks, shirts, vests, pants, etc.) Some of those items, are designed to be accessed on the move. Now, with backpacks, meh... sure. But other items (which I believe they've said they're interested in representing) need to be accessible whilst moving. Especially items like tactical vests, I want a reason to put my magazines in a vest, vice just anywhere.

And in my opinion, the hotbar needs to go as well. Or just not be visible. It's annoying to have to toggle it off all of the time because it constantly refreshes, and lingers, every time I look at my inventory.

The dot should be removed just like all this 3rd person madness. DayZ should be as immersive as possible and having 270 degree vision isn't very good for such game. There are shitters already complaining about the next patch which will wipe one of their primary weapons (if they have two, one in hands, one on back). Such people are whining that they will stop playing DayZ and I am happy for that. Less dumb kids, less KOS, less hackers (probably).

So that's a good start. Remove ability to log out with two primaries, remove dot sight, remove 3pp shitter mode. Community will only thank. And most people will adapt.

Yea the hot bar is atrocious.

It should be replaced with a a button to toggle between melee and firearm.
