Sniping with Mosin

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I haven't sniped before but now I've started and wondered how to lead my shots. I was shooting at someone running across me from 50 metres away and I just couldn't hit him. How do I successfully lead the shot?

Thanks in advance  :beans:

With practice :)
If you own Arma as well as DayZ I'd start there with some NPC target practice.
If not find a quiet corner of the map and start popping Zeds.

And the across shots will be the hardest to make no matter though.
But at 50m you wouldn't have to lead the target much.

The further away the more you'll need to lead.
Will also be easier to see once we get proper bullet impacts back in the game.

50m is a bit to close to be sniping anyone don't you think  :P

Well, I've never actually sniped anyone, I've only killed four people in my 85 hours of DayZ. Two point blank with a magnum, and two with a SKS less than 30 metres away. It is the only example of me shooting someone with a mosin, so I naturally used it. I use my mosin for support, and I've never needed to pull the trigger.

Start with them standing still to get used to setting the zeroing right.

That's what I am still working at. I keep mixing up if it's 300m or 400m.

Hitting a standing still zombie at 600m+ with a LRS isn't hard, I can say that since I've done it :p, and if you miss from closer you'll have em charging at  you so there you go, a moving target :)

Just don't try this outside Elektro or Berzino unless you find an empty server :)

Get used of using the map to know where you are, and find random Z's. Use the map to get a range estimate.

Zero scope to that range.

Shoot - rinse, repeat. Try to remember what range equals to what distance.

Play around with the FOV setting, and see what zoom setting works for you.

The only issue is indeed working with leading. A few days ago I saw 3 guys running at 500m. I shot a few meters in front of the first guy.

The middle guy fell down unconscious.

Experienced people will zigzag in an unpredictable way, good luck tring to hit that from 700m...

Yeah I can snipe from long distances pretty well (800 metres plus isn't too much of a challenge), it's just leading a target that I have difficulty with, no matter what the range.

Were you near the north east airfield?

If it is less than 600 meters, you aren't sniping. Nough said.

My reasons for using the 50m example has already been explained

Leading is really just having a feel for it, but usually the problem I see is people will either hardly lead at all or be too aware of it and either lead too much or not focus on landing the shot vertically.

If you have Arma games, I recommend you practice with those to get a feel for it and just calibrate in DayZ, otherwise get lots of ammo, head into the North on an empty server, and fire off shots at different ranges.  Get an idea for how long it takes from the time you pull the trigger to the when you see the bullet hitting your target, going in 100m or 200m increments.  Then just get a feel for player speed and plug in how far someone can run in a certain time with how long it takes your bullet to reach them.  At the end of the day though, even the best shots will have trouble with hitting targets far off who are juking properly.

I know you briefly address the 50m thing, but I'll say something quick on that.  TBH, unlike a lot of games, in Arma and DayZ close quarters can be up to 100m, sometimes 150m depending, so there's no need to try and use a sniper.  If the sniper is all you have, you won't need to really lead at all in CQB, and in the case of DayZ, you may just want to take off the LRS if you can to have my accurate shots.  You can keep a PU scope on hand if you don't like iron sights.

50 meters = no leading. To give you a scale: at 550 meters you need to lead your target the entire skiny length of the crosshair. Meaning, when your target falls into view at the end of the fat end of the crosshair, where the skinny line begins is when you fire.

This method is completely accurate as I've done very little other than longe-range sniping since the beginning of SA and have well over 500 LR confirmed kills. We've timed bullet drops, made measurements, as well as fired thousands of rounds in live target testing [most of which are side-to-side angles].

If your 50 meter target was running from an side-to-side angle just put the crosshair on the very edge of his body and have your finger not relaxed and slighlty tensed on the button, not hovering above it.

Remember, there is a 10th of a second delay or so in your brain activity from when your brain says to fire before your neurons actually send that information to your finger, another 10th of second delay or so if your finger is hovering, another if your finger is relaxed on the button and not slightly tensed, as well as another 10th of a second delay or so once the button is pushed and the gun fires. All of those combined can add up to a missing half second and a missed target.

As you can see there are many elements to being a crack shot while sniping in DayZ.

Is there actually any point using a mosin in my situation (running around with mates) or should I get something like the Blaze?

Can't comment specifically on the blaze, but in terms of the mosin in team play is just depends on if you plan on doing overwatch or if you typically go in a bit closer. The mosin can be used in close to mid range combat if you choose your shots right, but there are better alternatives.

If you do enjoy overwatch then you're golden.

Yeah I enjoy overwatch, but I don't get much chance at it. We're a very mobile squad, running and looting. When we go to the airfield I provide over watch, but we usually go on low population servers for that, so I've never actually been in combat that was further than 50 metres. I like to think myself as a designated marksman. The mosin should be better than the blaze for that, surely?
