Strength is overrated. Machete stores on the back, has a very low visual profile, opens cans well and can one-shot a zombie if you sneak attack them in the back of the head, (which I think is actually true with most melee weapons)

The FAxe also has more range than fists, makes the victim bleed, and has utility.

 

There never was another comparable melee weapon besides maybe the pitchfork, which has more range and somewhat comparable stats. There's also the new pickaxe, which has about the same stats as the FAxe.

I kid you not, it took about 100-120 hits with a pitchfork to kill a zombie earlier... it took about 5-6 minutes of constant body and head shots.

I can pretty consistently hit zombies with a headshot, within 1 to 3 hits with the fireaxe. However until I make that headshot I am pretty vulnerable to the zombie counterattacking. With a combat knife on the other hand, it takes about 3-4 headshots, but they are far easier to make and it knocks down the zombie constantly. So while the combat knife is far safer, it does take much longer.

Fireaxe still works fine but it seems like the head hitbox is a bit high.
When blood comes out of the head you'd think it was a clean head shot, but you really need to aim a bit above the head, even in 1st person.

I wouldn't mind if melee weapons was evened out a bit in damage though. Just for variations sake.

The axe is still the best it only takes more than one hit if the zombie is glitching.

 

Just don't fight them in third person it's incredibly easy to hit them in the head in first, just make sure you click on their head ignore timing axe swings it seems more like you hit them when you click and then the attack animation is played.

 

So if you click to the left of their head and the axe animation hits their head, the attack went to the left where you clicked.

So just ignore the axe's existence essentially.

 

Even the splitting axe takes them down in one head shot everyone just seems to be aiming at them wrong.

Currently not the strongest but the best weapon is machete, it can be worn on your back as somebody already said, it has like 2 times faster attack animation than axes = more hits in same time, plus it seems to hit nearly exactly on the cursor so its incredibly easy to kill zombies( one hit knockdown and then kill them before they get up), axes has so retarded animation its nearly impossible to headshot moving zombies

I was just thinking that...  With my low fps due to my old rig, its hard to get head shots with melee so i carry the sporter with the  rare mag in my hands. That is my new weapon of choice for zeds.

theres no strongest melee, i dropped 5 zombies at the same time with fists, took nearly as fast as fire axe or the machete.

just take a weapon where you can always hit the hat easily with, fire axe or for me machete works best to do this, 2-3 hits and 1 hit from behind.
