How to handle close encounters?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if I'd give the OP such a hard time.  Awhile back I was patrolling up the main coast road and I came across a new spawn.  I'm usually friendly (or at least not psychotic) to people if they don't pose a threat.  So I'm chatting with this guy (from a safe distance) about "blah blah" this and "see any players" that when all of a sudden he's like "..AND I KNOCKED THEIR ASS OUT LIKE THIS!" and rushes me.  So I drop him with my SKS but he's not dead.  He begs me to kill him so he can respawn so I oblige him with a pistol shot to the head.

But now another new spawn comes at me with an ax!

I drop him with a double-tap from my 9mm.

By now, two more players appear (one is armed with a rifle).  So at this point I just say "fuck it", go back to the SKS and drop them too.

So that's 4 players I killed without really looking to pick a fight with any of them.

All are justifiable kills to me. Anytime a situation goes hostile, anyone nearby needs to be cleared out. I am a good guy, but do not take me for a pushover. I may say I do not kill Bambi's, or other players for that matter, but that does not mean I have not taken out my fair share, due to them showing as a threat. You have to protect yourself, staying alive is what it is about.

From fresh spawn to 4-600 rounds of 5.56 takes around 2 hours if I spawn at 3 valleys. I only play full servers as well and that is assuming I don't murder anyone on the way. Gearing up is much faster then.

I went the Balota, Zerno, Vybor, NWAF, Stary route.  Within a few hours of gameplay (over several days), I have a silenced M4, M1911, silenced 9mm (some Russian gun I never heard of) 3 CMAGs (40,40,20 rounds), 1 M1911 mag, 2 9mm mags and a shit-ton of 9mm and ,45 ACP rounds.  Too bad the silencers don't work yet.

The only reason I don't have more 5.56 is I was packing a Mosin (also with a shit-ton of 7.62) until I got to NWAF until I found the M4.

Guns & ammo are pretty common.  Too bad there's nothing to shoot at except each other.

Afternoon gents,

I've had a busy few hours in Berezino.  I must have killed a good 10 people so far, maybe 50% of them had guns.  I've killed a bunch of fresh spawns, but it seems to me like they're not looking for help from me.  I spotted a fresh spawn nearby, told him I wasn't going to shoot him, lost sight of him, then next thing I know he's running towards me full speed.  I shot him twice in the chest.  I've had a steady stream of fresh spawns run towards me, one managed to knock me out with his fists before he died from my shots (a little desync on both our ends I imagine?).

I don't consider myself a bandit or hero; I only usually shoot armed people, and don't bother looting them since I aim for the chest to be safe.  People on this forum complain a lot about KOSers, so how do those people handle these close encounters?

Why wouldn't you shoot a fresh spawn unless he's far away or running in the opposite direction?

As long as they listen to me and respond I'll give them the benefit of doubt. If they are acting shady, always shoot first, ask questions later.

Grimey Rick does what Rick Grimes can't. Kills innocents, hate-fucked Lori while she was still alive, and beats the shit out of Carl on a regular basis.

Aren't you glad you didn't get the order of those muddled up. ;)

And that was before the apocalypse!

One on one close encounters aren't too bad, even more so when you see them first or see each other at the same time. You can usually take a moment to weigh your options given the surroundings, the other players disposition etc.

Of course when two armed players round a corner in a town and end up almost on top of each other, it rarely ends well.

Its infinitely tougher though to judge encounters when there's a couple of friends in the area working together and they come upon you lone wolfing it - which I am most of the time.

I'll admit that on more than a few occasions I've just decided not to take the chance and just wait until they're close together and cut them down. Though at the same time I've been on the receiving end of a bullet to the skull many times where after teaming up with some friendly folks they've randomly decided I'm no longer welcome and they'd like my gear before I left lol.

It's usually the person who initiates - or gets the drop on more so - the interaction that dictates how things go. So if you play a more careful game, you'll end up being the initiator more often and can control somewhat how things play out.

Though if you see handcuffs coming out when someone has you at gunpoint, you're probably going to want to pull your weapon and take your chances no matter how dire the situation lol

For me Close fights are a problem even with a long double barrel shotgun....because i've shoot many time both the sheels and hit the target both 2 times, without kill within 5 metres.

Now give me a good reason shall i use a Crossbow that needs 2 bolt to kill someone, as most of the noobs just spray and pray with an M4 on close combat.

Listen to Massacre.

If it moves, it is a threat... shoot it

Fresh spawns are more dangerous than kitted players as they have absolutely nothing to lose. You tell them to run away and they hide behind a wall waiting for their opportunity, don't give them that opportunity.

It's true, when I'm a fresh spawn I don't care at all. I recently spawned in the (new?) village just north of NEAF. There was a revolver in the nearest house, I took it, sprinted into NEAF with zero gear except my revolver and killed the first guy I found and took his stuff. Zero risk strategy. In my defence, I was 80% sure he was the same guy who had killed me about 10 minutes previously in the same place so I didn't feel too bad. If I'd been better kitted out though I would have spent much longer approaching and been more cautious when I got there, so less dangerous.

An important thing to remember is that 'fresh spawn' does not mean, like an MMO, low level or noob. Even the best players die occasionally. Some guys are handier with a .22 pistol than many are with full gear and protective clothing.

I tend to avoid all players. I shoot players with their weapons out. If their weapons are on their backs I try get as close as I can and if they run or try take it out after I tell them 'hands up' I drop them. I avoid ALL new spawns since they have absolutely nothing to lose. But if I do come across one I keep a very far distance and if they walk towards me they die. But then again I have ran across some people in the military camp in nw airfield that just say 'hey, sup' and continue looting (even though both of us have our weapons out) but we can't predict everyone is that friendly. So yeah...that's how I handle it.

I got knocked out by one.  I was on a rooftop, and he basically appeared there.  I shot him 5 times in the chest, then saw "you an unconscious".  When I came to, he was dead in front of me.

My question was : how much do you trust a fresh spawn running up to you?

Unless they are trying to kill you, there is no point to shoot them.

I rest my case?

To the OP. I don't think you're doing anything wrong with your responses to people. My friendly encounters as an armed person or as a naked fresh spawn are all relatively well received. I think out of the last 15 or so times I've attempted to be friendly, i've only been shot at twice. killed once and then managed to dodge the second and was able to escape.

When I approach someone as a fresh spawn or not, I keep my distance and give a friendly wave. I wait for them to respond by saying or typing something and see how it goes from there. I stay standing in case they want to be a dick and try to shoot me so that I have a chance to dodge. If it goes well, I move in closer but not too close. I never have my fists up. Step 3 in that for me is crouching down to show that again, i'm not out to take anything they've earned. At that point I stand back up as we decide what we will do. Whether it's part ways or travel together, or they have something I can use or I have something they can use that I don't really need.

When I give someone an extra weapon (actually happens a lot) I always place the ammo further away from the pile of other shit i'm giving them and tell them the ammo is there right as I part ways. This buys me some time to get away if they decide to be a dick about it. Never really had a problem with it though. People are usually pretty appreciative that I decided to help them out.

I really think it's mostly about your approach to people. It's not hard to tell when a person is legitimately trying to be cool with you. If you have a freshy running full speed at you, I think you'd be really stupid NOT to fill them with lead. There are always going to be instances where killing people isn't only warranted, but downright clear that it needs to be done. Having played for quite a bit now, I think it's pretty easy to determine most people's intentions.
