A Way To Fix Gamma Exploiting

So iv been thinking for a bit and i think we need a natural way to adjust our eyes to the darkness around us rather than having to turn up the gamma just to be able to see things. Actually when left in the dark for a period of time our eyes naturally adjust to the darkness. So lets say maybe something like 10 minutes into playing night the darkness gradually gets lighter allowing us to see better in the dark. Not SUPER better but enough to get around and find buildings and make out objects on the floor.

 

Its ether we find some kind of mechanic like this to work with or ppl are going to keep trying to find ways to get around it. Cause lets face it. No one wants to use a flashlight or light unless they want to be spotted for everyone to see them.

 

What do you guys think? A natural not forced adjustment like this on a character would not be game breaking at all. In fact it would still be hard to see things but would be more manageable.

If kids would learn how to read like they are supposed to we wouldn't have these kinds of post very often.... lol. It makes you wonder what the hell schools are even teaching them now a days. XD

If people wouldn't think of this as a wargame ( DM, FFA, TDM ) then people would be using their light sources more often. Since every sign you give away attracts KoSers like a pile of crap flies you know what people would rather do instead of taking a risk sometimes. They come into the forums and whine about nights beeing too dark...

Don't get me wrong i love guns. Give me every single gun on the planet in game. But i agree ppl are to trigger happy in this game at the moment. Make the game play like 2017 and i guarantee you ppl would be KOSing ALLOT less because loot is very scarce and you need to save the bullets you find to hunt food with rather than waste on pvp since there are no full cans of food in any town.

We need flares. They don't give away your exact position and blind gamma abusers  :D

flares and chemlights. Dont forget about the chemlights.

Torches made out of sticks+rags+matches(fire).

And obviously the ability to harvest sticks from trees with axes.

Then it would not be hard to have a basic light source,startup

flashlights got to go IMO and normally added in the loot table.

Agreed. And when fire gets added, setting stuff on fire is a no-brainer

I reckon they just need to limit the gamma parameters. I mean no one seriously NEEDS the gamma to be that high. It would still be good to have some flexibility but not the ridiculous legacy-contrast-looking settings.

 

On top of that, it would be good to see some long-term light sensitivity.

Yeah, this so much

Also OP, maybe the whole eyes-adjust thing could be even in the space of five or two minutes, that's generally how long it takes IRL.

90% darkness should definitely be a thing though because that's what makes DayZ really scary, where it's less scary in the current iteration.

If your eyes adjust to the darkness you will start to see things, when you start to see gradients instead pitch black is when gamma works. 

I think if we want gamma to be unusable we need to keep the night like it is right now, pitch black, because the more light the more the more effect gamma will have, for example on moon nights gamma is much more noticeable than in pitch black nights.

or trowable rags that are set on fire (flares)

This completely, and I would go a step further and say that once you have confirmed your settings then they are locked to that character and any changes you subsequently make will only take effect on respawning. So if you play on an accelerated time server and gamma exploit then day time will become unplayable on that character.

 

Also I don't see the need to make the night brighter, just suck it up and turn on the torch, its a lot of fun!

I think no game has prevent users from using gamma, I don't think is even possible, because you can always tweak the gamma in other ways. 

 

I kinda like the night of Dayz because even using gamma you won't see a thing, it forces you to use some source of light.

Can't you clip out details and swap out textures, that would make gamma change useless.

 

At night, surface illumination < some value, flip to texture dark no details.

 

Put a check in the rendering cycle for ambient light and total light.

add a global 'dark texture' if at anytime light is to low, texture is swapped with dark texture.

 

You would not have to check every polygon being texture every render cycle, since if you checked 1% every render, in 3 seconds it would adjust all the textures to dark, or back to normal.  And the checking would only have to be done at night, when there is less rendering occurring anyways.

 

If a mobile light source, such as a player light is in the area, bump it up to 100% for close polygons since then it would have to flip based on a point source light moves

 

Note the 'light reflective properties would have to be copped over to dark texture in the case of reflective surfaces, so that it would stil accurately illuminate things around it with what little light it does get, however it would solve gamma hack.

Well, that, and turning up your gamma hardly affects environmental brightness anymore. It may slightly boost it, but it also comes with hugely distorted image quality and generally makes it harder to see. I'd rather have Deathlove's solution of natural, accumulated night vision (which could also work for interiors and underground locations) in addition to more sources of light (torches, rare NVGs, etc.)

They could also do with increasing the brightness to a slight degree on some night cycles, because some computer monitors had pitch black darkness even when gamma settings actually changed stuff (My old computer monitor was awful to play Arma 2 with when it was first released)
