Zombies - The Make or Break of DayZ?

A slightly different topic about zeds I wanted to discuss because the way I see it, the Zeds are what will make or break this game. 

 

As we've had years of the mod and things like Rust where everyone can build a base what can really set the SA apart - the Zeds!

 

You hear a lot of people wanting things to do because PVP is getting stale. When they add in all the other things like base building and hunting and farming that's all great too but not what we signed up for which is a zombie apocalypse.

 

Therefore it is imperative that most of the work is done on the zeds and how much of a danger and a challenge they're going to be for us. If they do them wrong, it's going to have a major impact on the gameplay as we all want scenes like this....

 

 

We need a constant threat in the game, something to be feared and respected, not something we can just run by and ignore because they're too easy - if the zeds are like that you might as well remove them from the game.

We need to give the zombies a very high chance of transmiting gagrene (or some other natural disease) to the victim.

That would make them very fearsome predators,and survivors will feel shear terror when one of them is coming close.

I think they need a good blend of fight or flight, where 1 or 2 zombies wouldnt be too much of a threat that you can be taken out easily, but their strength is in numbers, with more and more zombies causing more panic and things can quickly get out of a players control should they attract too many.

 

I think a game that does zombies well is state of decay, although it does share a great resemblance to dayz, they have managed to get zombies right, imo

Hello there

 

I think Zeds are an important part of the core game for many and the game will be judged in many ways on the zed changes and improvements over the mod.

 

But not all of us did sign on for zeds.

 

For lots of us its the persistent survival aspect.

 

It will be interesting to see how zeds will change that.

 

Hopefully they will be so overhauled that even folks like me who are "meh" on zeds in general will come to appreciate them being in game.

At the moment for me zeds are the only thing really breaking the game, why:

They run through most objects

The respawn mechanic is very flawed and frustrating

They damage your clothes very easily

The aggro is ridiculous

The melee system is buggy and underpiwered

They dissapear straight after death, dropping no loot and respawn 50m away aggrod on you

They hit through walls and floors

Theres currently a desync bug whichteleports you back to a corner of a house occasionally, often the zombie corner traps me there

they sometimes spawn on roofs

There new animation delays the time btween there swing and you getting hit so it looks like there hitting you from 10m back when your sprinting away from them

This. I hope they are able to add in hundreds of zeds but I also want to see some creativity and randomness thrown in.

The game is marketed as a zombie apocalypse that you need to survive in, not a survive in the wild bear grills style. The two are closely related but if you want survival, play rust (oops lol doesn't rust have zeds? I hardly ever see them in videos so assumed they'd been removed but remember seeing them in early vids). This is a zombie apocalypse and thus a major part of the development has to go to that.

 

This is why they need to be done right so people like you who aren't that bothered are also impressed.

I know rocket plays a lot of project zomboid, and this makes me hopeful because you've got to seriously respect the zombies in that game! One stupid move and they will make you pay for it. In fact If the devs could transfer many of the zombie features from Zomboid to DayZ it would make for a much better game.

It's been established that they aren't actually zombies but rather infected humans in a zombiefied state, hence their super athletic abilities. Also apparently servers can't handle too many infected, so I don't think we will see hordes seen in state of decay or even 7DTD, but they want to introduce unauthentic survival items such as helicopters and tanks to clutter up the servers.

Zombies seen in State of Decay, 7dtd and even walking dead, are more accurate depictions of the original zombie, only threat when in large numbers.

Zombies need to be more of a problem, we also need more of them, most people don't care about zombies and just run through them. they also need to be fixed, because they run through walls.

They run through most walls. What they can't run through are the brown picket fences that are broken in places and those wire fences with concrete at the bottom of them. All the devs need to do is surround each house, in between the walls with the little picket fence and problem solved already.

 

OK that's not the fix but it will get fixed. Don't worry about that, worry about how the zeds are going to work and if they're not going to work, take them out completely.

 

If the zeds are anything like the mod then they might as well forget it and we want hordes of zombies. That was one of the reason for the SA - by redoing the zeds they could reduce the amount of character passes from 7 down to 1 meaning a lot less resources. What's a character pass? I don't have a clue ;)

I agree. The Zeds need to be a threat in this game. There needs to be INCENTIVE to work together with randoms/groups/clans at times. Otherwise this game will always lack depth. There will never be anything to do except kill each other. It will just be very large scale battlefield clone with clunky controls and survival elements.
