Is the item damage mechanic useful ?

I think it should be based on random chance based on where the bullet hits.  Get shot in the backpack, all of your items have a slight chance to fall a rank or two (worn to damaged, etc), get completely ruined, or just simply have nothing at all happen to them.  Right now, getting shot and not being able to salvage ANYTHING off of a person is lunacy.

It's more annoying than usefull to me. Just stating my opinion. overall  - don't mind but the system should be better. Its kinda stupid that you get 2 shoots in backpack and all content is ruined. same with pants when falling from 3 meters. all cans are ruined - epic

I like it. I mean, sure it isn't perfect - far from it. I doubt I'd get ruined pants just because I fall down some stairs and break my legs or that everything would get ruined from a couple of shots.

I guess and hope that they eventually will improve it though. No need to remove the system, only improve it.

I like it but it needs work. It also means if you get some shots off at a guy that kills you, you know you ruined his gear and your gear is now ruined so he looses out lol. 

 

Now with the mechanic in place, it's up to you to work out your game tactics around it.

It's a good idea and I think it really enriches the experience. But, as it's been said before, it needs (lots of) work. My biggest problem with it in its current state is the falling damage - how the hell does a little fall that didn't even broke my leg(s) ruin all the stuff in my pants!? Why is it that, after I fell from the ship wreck (again) and died, I'm unable to loot my body because everything got destroyed by a fall that, in reality, wouldn't even scratch something that has been in the freakin' backpack!?

 

I don't mind my stuff being damaged by bullets and melee attacks, but if a 15m fall ruins everything, including the guns (!!!), a player had with him, I call fucking bullshit.

OP is a bit confusing to me, first you say its not helping KOS at all, but then say a shotgun is useless to you now as it ruins all there gear......seems to be working even in its prototype state. Once its improved, polished then balanced it should not only achieve the goal it was designed for but also add another level of depth to the survival aspects of the game. Lets face it the survival is what pulls in most players, not the action :)

That is not what is happening either. Getting shot in the arm will ruin your shirt, but not the backpack. Backpack only gets damaged by direct body shots (or direct backpack shots). At least that is what has happened to me last time I tried that. It seems there is more differentation of damage than when they first introduced the system, and it will probably get more specific over time.

 

Anyway I like it, basically for the reasons already stated: It is realistic to a certain degree that stuff gets ruined by bullet or melee damage, and it incurs a more lasting damage from gunfights than we would otherwise see, making the "die and run back to your body" scenario less rewarding, and thus making death from gunshots much more penalising. And it also serves to keep down the prevalence of many military items, as most of the players collecting them basically run out to shoot and get shot, making DayZ much less militarised than it could have been.

Falling damage should definitely ruin some stuff. The impact of falls from very short heights by the human body (as well as backpack and other stuff) equals several tonnes of pressure. That should be reflected in stuff getting damaged.

that mechanic is why i love the shotgun, one shot and every piece the guy had is ruined, no need finish him off anymore, plus extra points if you broke his legs :D

Now that the item damage mechanic has been in place for quite a while we can form an educated opinion on it now.

 

So do you guys now like or absolutely hate the item damage mechanic, the mechanic where gunshot wounds ruin everything on a players body.

 

The mechanic initially was added as a deterrent for banditry but lets be honest it did no such thing and nothing outside of removing all guns in the game would do that.

 

I personally find the mechanic absolutely useless and more importantly is detrimental to gameplay.

 

It is imo detrimental to gameplay merely because it punishes a certain style of gameplay while promoting another. This is something that really should not happen in a sandbox game.

 

The other reason why it is bad is that it makes certain weapons absolutely useless, shotguns are downright useless for me because they destroy every single piece of equipment a player I shoot with has.

 

 

 

As a bandit these are my opinions but how do you feel about this mechanic ?

 

IMO it depends on the designed purpose of the mechanic.  If it's supposed to bring "realism" to combat (things get damaged in combat) then I'd say it's overdone currently.  Five 9mm rounds through a jacket won't ruin it...they will ruin the guy wearing it, but not the jacket.  The jacket can still be worn, provide warmth, protection, and could easily be mended/patched.  The permanent consequence would probably just be blood stains...and even these if addressed quickly and in the right manner could be dealt with.  So I think the current system fails the "realism" test.    

 

If the mechanic is over-done intentionally (items are purposely ruined from unrealistic amounts or types of damage) as a way to add "significant consequences" to combat/KOS, then I'd say it fails to do so at this time.  PVP is rampant in the game and has been since day one.  Hyper item damage has done nothing to discourage this.  

 

If the survival aspects of the game change (i.e. clothing quality & type become critical due to weather, temperature, etc.) and the scarcity of good clothing is increased then maybe the hyper-damage mechanic would do something to discourage completely senseless combat/KOS (which I believe Rocket mentioned in one of the very early video dev blogs).  I really doubt it though.  Players with the survivor mentality will be concerned about preparing for inclement weather and the like, but these folks aren't typically running around KOS'ing or just looking for a fight.  Players who are primarily focused on the PVP aspects of the game learn not to get attached to their gear (or anyone else's) and typically could care less whether combat ruins the other guy's pants...so the mechanic will be ignored by them.  

 

So, in the end, I can't find a real justification for the system as it currently works.  It's not realistic and it doesn't really impact the PVP aspect of the game by adding "consequences."  Maybe there is another reason the system is setup this way that I haven't thought of.   I agree with the OP.  There isn't much justification for the current system and it detracts from gameplay.

Blood on cloaths you take from victims.......could this be the new bandit identification?? :)

 

I did a sugestion ages ago for blood on hands if you search a dead body, this could play into that a lot. These crazy pshco guys could finally start to look like crazy phsco guys instead of just like everyone else. It could be washed off with water or something but that could be a hard choice if you are low on supplies :)

I'd like to throw in a personal hate...

 

Scope damage.

 

Im sure anyone here with a military background, or even a weapons handling background will agree that the amount of "broken" scopes you find lying around airfields and milspawns is rediculous. I can understand scopes being damaged if they are on someones person when they are shot (In fact, if you have say, a PU scope in your jacket, some 7.62x51, and a can of food, and are shot the scope should have the highest chance of being ruined/damaged due to its size in comparison to the other objects, but I digress...) but finding damaged/bad damaged PU/ACOG/LRS/RDS is just not likely. After 4 years of swamp stomping through the Canadian woods with an Elcan sight and a tour to Afghanistan, the only scope Ive ever seen crack was an American ACOG that was ran over by an ASUV, and even then the frame cracked not the lens.

 

So that's my two cents, everything else I can deal with, Blood ruins clothing/Food/Drink maybe we have a case of the Walking Dead where everyone is already infected and some type of fluid swapping can lead to a bad case of the zombles?

You can fix your clothes by yourself to "worn", this is really nice.


But they should add the "Wound"System from Arma3! There you can see where the player was hit (like in this picture)

I don't even think the wound system in arma 3 is detailed enough for my tastes.

 

I wana see very clear and noticeable entry and exit wounds for bullets so I can tell exactly how and where a person got shot when I look at a dead body.

While most scopes are robust one has to remember alot of optics especially cheaper optics are not.

 

Heck alot of cheap scopes break from the simple recoil impulse of certain guns.

Maybe civvie made scopes you buy at basspro, but I expect any scope you find on a mil base to meet milspec standards. Can't have scopes breaking left right and center leaking iridium everywhere can we?

Yea I would expect the acog, and the rds to be robust those are military optics.

 

The long range scope in the game however feels like crappy scope to me, I mean it has a duplex reticle after all and I really cannot comment on the reliability of pu scopes having never encountered one but I would imagine they are not that good at reliability considering their age.

I like it.

 

Even if you hit the arm and kill the player when a dead body drops it drops hard and in unnatural ways. Could very easily destroy items in a backpack. maybe not every item though.

 

However I am not going to push for hyper realism in this case....I feel that KOSers and bandits should need to exercise precaution and skill when taking a mark for gear. 

 

Avoid using shot guns, Aim for the head or legs, and...try looting gear on your own once and awhile ;)

 

I am about as geared as you can get....I rarely ever see other players even close to my gear level...including bandits/KOSers.

 

It is much easier to spend 1-2 hours hoofing it up to NWAF and then looting the place...it is a ghost town unless your on a 40 man server. I died due to ladder glitch the other day and I had all but 2 items back in 2 NWAF runs. 

 

right now my buddy and I just raid that once a day waiting on updates to the game to add more features like silencers and better zombie AI.

 

Right now the beach is such a huge PVP zone man do not even venture far from it. If gear is not destroyed when people spray and pray or blast you with buckshot then they will have even less of a reason to come duke it out at NWAF.
