TurkeySlab (DayZ)

Cities and City Layout

Recommended Posts

So I've clocked in about 130+ hours and one of my biggest frustrations of the game is that there is simply nothing that shows you that there is a zombie apocalypse. All the house are in pristine condition except a bit of blood here and there. I want the game (when it's finished) to look similar to "The Last of us" with the ruins and extreme overgrowth. The grass is fine on high but the buildings need some touch up like small head sized holes to large missing entire walls.

Second thing I've noticed is the layout of "cities" and "towns" is that the way they're set up, they seem empty before the apocalypse. I want the cities to feel like everyone rushed out and tried to leave. Like more trash small trash piles more run down cars (in cities and on big roads) and maybe a major university and government building.

Just my though on the game. Any other suggestions?

TLOU takes place 20 years after the apocalypse.

What's to say that DayZ doesn't take place a few weeks or months after the infection? It's not like buildings magically get overgrown and crumble, it takes years and/or extraneous circumstances.

However, I do agree with you that they need to make Chernarus feel more like the SHTF. Traffic jams, crashed helicopters, overrun roadblocks, remnants of camps, refugee camps, etc.

Yeh, DayZ is a few weeks after the apocalypse. I'd like to see more signs of control: tanks, troops, executions.

Also bigger cities but that's a different topic.

There are fresh fruits lying around in houses. The zombie apocalypse couldn't have started more than a week ago.

someone used their brains here. is that allowed on the forums?

I'm not entirely sure we can use "fresh food" loot as a reference for how long after the apocalypse is DayZ taking place.

I mean, if your character is 6 months old and you're still finding fresh food on the shelves of the house you've looted 25 times over... You see what I'm saying?

There is simply no consistency from the devs side. On one hand fresh fruits on the other only totally rusted vehicles...

Maybe they are just placeholders and the devs are configuring them to spawn on trees.

You know,to show off that they exist.

Soon I'll be able to retire my gun and go farm. I've already found a decent barn with a nice shed.

No more violence for me.

Anyway trying to get logic inside a game about zombies isn't the best way to enjoy it. Especially cause it's a game               about zombies.

ahhh....that doesn't mean that they shouldn't go for some sort of consistency or authenticity for that matter.

it's like saying "well there can be also unicorns or drink an energy drink and run 3x so fast, because f* logic we have zombies already"

i think they just didn't quite give it a thought. kiwis (obvious easteregg), bananas and oranges don't grow in eastern europe and in comparison to the whole setting it seems the apocalypse started months ago.

However with the latest patches they tried to introduce more common and reasonable fruits and veggies anyway.

Of course there's a limit, not going to deny that. but in a videogame you make trade-offs; ramp up the amount of polygons and create an area most people will lag in or forsake the idea and create a far more cleaner area that's somewhat playable etc...

I wasn't so much referring to the zeds as to the fact it' a videogame :P

The mod had all the barricades and vehicle wrecks clustered in towns mostly, then some to catch you out on the open road. I really cant wait for these to come back and im sure they will. Furnishing the map is something I don't think we will see till later on though. They may well be working on placement of some wrecks but with a portion of the north still unfinished they obviously wont be able to do anything up there for a while.

I think they have thought about making the map more post apocalyptic, evidenced by the choice to use the old beaten down market model that wasn't seen in the old chernarus, but was on the (not very played) proving grounds map. I don't think they will put them in till they are all done though, mainly because they all get cached and loaded when player is near (if that carrys into the SA) so marking them all and writing the caching scripts will be time consuming. Not to mention the very process of placing these thousands of entities with no clipping or floating issues.

Im not worried at all that by the time we hit full game, Chernarus will look a lot more apocalyptic :)

PS cant wait tio be driving full speed down the road thinking "ahh I know theres no wrecks here".....then to crest a hill and barrel into either A. the wreck of a player car or B. the well placed tank trap someone built for an ambush :)

They're still redesigning major parts of the map and adding in cities. After all that they need to add this other stuff in but if you were the guy in charge of designing that map, wouldn't you want to add all that in and make it look the part? I'd love to be able to make something like that.

If it were a week after the apocalypse, wouldn't you expect to see more Military behind all those 'signs of control'

There's no way a bunch of rag tag civilians could outlast the military.

So far DayZ just has an extreme lack of backstory.

http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/186377-framework-for-lore-discussion/

I started a thread with the express purpose of establishing/discussing a timeline preceding the events of DayZ.

It's long, but if you read the entire piece you'll get a sense of what a coherent background can do to the experience of DayZ.

That's what I meant, yeah. BTRs in the streets with dead civilians lined up on walls.
