Rest/sleep

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been thinking what could be good improvements in order to make the game more realistic (survival), so, here are my suggestions:

- Rest/sleep attribute. I believe it would be good to add rest/sleep stat to the character. The need of rest will introduce some great variables.
- Penalties for lack of rest/sleep. In order to make it more real, the lack of rest, could result in a decrease of the performance of the character, like, run less than usual, or slower than usual, or worst aiming.
- Ability to lock/secure doors/flats/houses/whatever. The need of rest will make us search for appropiate places to spend some time. For that reason, the ability to lock and secure this space will be primordial to avoid zombies or other players (with diferent levels depending on your gear). I´m not talking about base-building.
- More detailed cities/towns. I think it would be great to have more detailed cities/towns to maximice the options of finding a spot to hide.
- Interaction during rest/sleep periods. For example, and I know it will be hard to do it due to server slots, but, if you put your character to rest when you log out the game, I think it will be interesting that the character don't disapear from the server, just get a different kind of slot (¿?). The point is the interaction between people, if you are such a bad boy, and spot some guy that is going to be, maybe you will want to break in and steal some of his stuff (if you have appropiate tools to break the lock). That kind of possibilities will make players more cautios and the game more realistic. I know it sounds crazy, and maybe technically unrealistic, but I like it.

That's it for now.

Thanks for your time.

If you are able to planificate your time in Dayz I don't think you will be forced to log out, but you will need to find a good spot to rest before you log out.

I think rest should be something you do after a good run, where you stop moving and get your breath.

Resting occasionally would slow down the rate at which you dehydrate and become hungry.

Having less equipment would let you run for longer and faster without needing to rest.

Failure to rest may make you throw up/ pass out.

The best way to rest should be to stop moving, keep warm, get some food/ water, sit down.

Once you are back in good running shape you should be told I feel revitalised/ well rested.

Warnings you need to rest should be, I'm feeling worn down, I'm out of breath, My lungs and heart are hurting, I am feeling dizzy, I need a sit down, I am feeling sick, I need to stop and rest now, I'm going to throw up, I think I should stop now, I'm feeling faint.

Etc etc.

Would be good to see this being a thing and people starting to carry less stuff around.

I think unlimited sprint will be removed, forcing you to trot away from athlet... sorry i meant zombies. Maybe seated position would increase the speed of recovery, but i do not see sleep mode implemented.

Honestly I believe rest should be optional , but if you do it's just another blood gaining bonus like "healthy" and "hydrated" , obviously this would be "well rested". I only say optional because some wouldn't like doing this at all but for me I love the idea of having to catch a few z's but always bein paranoid of where to do it , it makes you feel like you're truly in fear for your life like a real apocalypse survivor instead of some badass invincible pvp warrior .

The rest would be activated by a button and when you press it again your character would start to wake up , with blurry eyes for a second to make for realism (but I'd say for something like this lets not make it too realistic we already sleep 1/3 of our real lives away) and obviously you wouldn't be able to hear anything around you when sleeping ..

There should never be a game mechanic where it forces you to sit still doing nothing for any length of time. I don't know how you would implement such a feature and you can't keep your av in world when you log off for someone to just find.

basically go to sleep, then a few momkents later you wake up and its morning, i know that the dayz servers work different with the night time and daytime thats one of the problems oim guessing with the whole system, must be a way of doing something tho, even just having a nap or something XD

I dunno - hardly seems like a lot of fun and if it's only for 30 seconds it's not worth the dev time. I think we'll just have to assume that the time we aren't playing dayz is when our avatars are sleeping and pooping.

Sitting down after resting is something I already do, but I'm not sure if it actually has any impact on the game. I just stop when my character starts wheezing. As for sleep - no. Sitting down for a couple of minutes after an hour-long run is enough.

Oh I forgot.

I tested some rest times. I sprinted for 30 seconds with my fists up and then down and then stopped Prone, Crouched, Standing.

I found the only going prone saved about 8 seconds on recovery which I think was 50 seconds to stop breathing heavy whilst crouched or standing and 42 seconds to recover whilst prone.

There was no difference in times for fists up/down.

I think it is of the utmost importance to rest!

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to sleep, because this doesn't work that easy in a multiplayer game.

But your toon should need to chill down and regenerate. The more weight you're carrying with you, the longer or faster the hike, the longer you need to rest.

Why?

Simple reason: It gives you an incentive to find a safe spot and the need to chill out for some time.

There are many times where I sit down, but it doesn't have any effect besides it looks funny when you are sitting on a bed. :D

It is said that if you are eating whilst you walk, food won't be digested as good as if you are sitting down whilst eating.

I guess there are studies that pose the opposite, but my point is that your avatar should need to regenerate while it is doing almost nothing, but to care for the simple needs.

My thought was:

Once ragdoll and proper collision detection is in the game you push the F-key which is now for sit and your toon does something according to its stance:

-> you stand near a wall and push the F-key and your toon will lean against the wall regenerating at a very slow rate.

-> pushing F-key whilst prone your toon will sit down. If you're near to a wall you will gain an additional bonus in regeneration for leaning.

-> pushing F-key whilst laying the character will lay on it's back staring in the air. Best regeneration rate. Doing this on a couch, a bed  or your sleeping bag would give a bonus to this.

What do you think?

p.S.: Imagine the side effects that could arise if your toon didn't rest well for some time. For example you're in the wilderness don't have something to light a fire to get warm and you need to lay on the hard soil, because you don't own a sleeping bag ...

Too much realism =/= fun in-game

"Regeneration" should regenerate over time when walking/sitting, I think.

Imho it shouldn't regenerate, while you are actively doing something.

You really should need to rest.

It even would give a meaning to making a break!

Don't get me wrong! it shouldn't be exegerated, like waitng for a couple of minutes, but you should really need to rest for some time, allowing your body to relax.

Maybe the weather would have also effects on that, too? I would love it, to creep out of the bright noon sun into the fading shadows. B)

Actually, AFAIK, after doing sports, walking is better for the body than sitting down calmly and without moving ;)

Nobody says that you aren't allowed to move around, but I just don't want to see my toon regenerating while he's jogging

I think that different things should give you different rest. Concrete is bad, grass is okay, wood floor is decent, hay is amazing and those useless beds? Guess what, LIFESAVWRS. Another reason to find a small house to "live in"
