Fantastic news wind will affect bullets

Recommended Posts

Good thing Gibonez is here to horribly over complicate things!

Here's my experience with real world shooting in a military environment.

I have a C79 optical sight with 3.4x magnification. It's calibrated for 5.56mm platforms, and it has a range dial from 200 to 800 m. There is a simple aiming post to tell me where rounds will hit.

While I do have windage and elevation adjustment, you never use it once you have zeroed yourself at 100 m.

That's it. That's all you need to know to shoot out to 500m with 5.56.

The nice thing about military rifles is that they make them simple. Simple enough that some 18 year old kid can figure it out with a little training. You need to know what MoA is, or any of that other shit.

Can the same thing be applied to a m40a3 absolutely not.

Different things require different levels of complexity. I am not promoting everything get more complex, Things that are simple in real life should remain so.

Things that are complex in real life should also be in game.

Now you might say that I should practice, and if this is implemented, I will have to if I want to snipe at all, but I would feel like I was being forced into something I want no part in.

It is the same as bullet drop. Only sideways... not hard to figure out. As for being forced into something, it is the same as being "forced into" bullet drop, time of flight or dispersion. If you are shooting below 400 meters you should have few problems.

If all else fails, fire one round and note the impact. Adjust. Simple.

I don't think they have to go that far a simple ACE method of sniping works just fine.

go to 4 minutes 50 seconds you look at the top left of the screen there is a temporary arrow that displays the winds direction and has a color associated with it different colors give you an idea of how strong the wind is.

This works is not ugly looking and at the same time is easy to implement.

You get the arrow by pressing shift + k

Indeed, this is a beautiful thing.

Cant wait to see this in game...will add much more realsim to fireing a rifle at 300 to 400m..great post by the way :)

PSO is supposedly inbound with the SVD and/or AKM

Hello there

Here's another of my rifle range vids showing the SVD in action and especially how it performs on a windy day.

The SVD was always my goto rifle in Arma. I adore it.

Let's hope stand alone gets a good 2d scope like the one in your video with the proper 3.5x magnification so we can actually use it.

3km view distances are vital man.

How else are you supposed to spot distant game when hunting is in.

How else will you spot threats.

Heck with out long render and view distances many items become useless like binoculars.

If people are worried about performance issues then perhaps have a slider so people with older computers can lower their view distance and gain performance.

I like long view distances, no question there.

But I don't think that SA should cater specificaly for long range sniping.

I think that should be best left for Arma serie better, since there you are considered to be hardened soldier.

edit: It might be just me, but I dislike the idea of people being sniped from ranges over 1Km, when we are talking about SA.

Such long range kills would not be about getting gear and maybe not even about eliminating thread, but just and only about getting the kicks out of killing folks.  So I hope we woun't get those silly range finders or super duper powerfull sniper rifles with mega zoom optics. I simply can't see what good would this bring into SA.

So I'm for gunplay being realistic, but I hope Devs will not implement stuff that even trained marine veteran would have hard time to perform.

Ballistics affected by weather and he explains how bullets will be affected by wind.

Can we see the presentation in full somewhere? Is it old?

My issue with any of this is that in it's current state, any type of gunfire is terribly inaccurate and the bullet spread is unreaslistic regardless of which gun you're shooting. I'm all for these proposed changes and I think it would be awesome to impliment that level of detail, but I think the fundamental basics should be accurate first.

What do I mean?

Well, currently the game doesnt take wind ballistics into account, right??

Well.... with a pristine Mosin / LRS / Bipod / Comp: If you're exactly 300M from a barn and zero the scope in to 300M (FYI 300M is not terribly far in sniper terms, it's almost a gimme to a trained sniper...) then I would expect to headshot a stationary target 8/10 times assuming that I've held breath and pulled the trigger with the crosshair smack in the middle of the target's head.....

That's "realism," but unfortunately that's currently not the case. The bullet pulls off to the left, off to the right, up, down, you name it.....The spread is ridiculas. Even at a range of less than 25 meters you can take a 45, line it up directly with a stationary Zed's face, pull the trigger and miss.....

A few weeks ago I did some research. I've only been playing the game for a few months now and was curious as to why I couldn't hit anything, and then realized that some folks said there was a bug that caused the bullet to drop down and to the left. I started adjusting my aim and sure enough it seemed to work....occasionally. If this is really a bug and not just my imagination then why the heck is it not fixed and why are they planning all of these really intricate features before this is even fixed?

Right now at any distance  greater than 100Meters: the safest place to be when a sniper is aiming at you is directly lined up in the center of the crosshairs.... <-- This is a fact.

Let the specialists actually have to have a skillset. The COD tards will fall by the wayside.

Getting sniped in the SA from LOOOONG range should be more of a "Wow - nice shot" kind of experience rather than " AS50 clown - what a scrub".

I agreed but it depends what you consider "Long range"....

Where does "long range" start?

Craftable wind sock?

Sticks and rags FTW.

Working windsocks are notably absent from the airfields. Would be a nice touch.

The 3km view distances and player rendering does not specifically cater to sniping.

It is extremely useful for all aspects of the game everything from hunting (being able to see a long distance elk or deer and then stalking it and getting close without it noticing you.

Useful for spotting dangerous situations from a distance.

Great  overall just for the look of the game.

I can see your concern about being shot from over 1km but rest assured it is unlikely, a 1 km + shot is already difficult combine that with wind and you will very likely not get shot from those distances.

That depends what gun you're holding

Yup.

22 lr for example long range would be anything past 150 yards. 300 + yards would be extreme range.

meanwhile a .223 would laugh at 300 yards.

I'd really just like to see guns made more accurate left to right, particularly sniper rifles.

If you have all pristine gear and have taken the time to accurately dial in your scope + hold breath before firing then I feel like bullets should stay true at just about any range within the stated range of effectiveness for that weapon. (Assuming you've set your scope to the correct distance or manually compensated for bullet drop by aiming higher or lower)

I'm okay with bullet drop, it's the left/right inaccuracy that bugs me. Putting in wind would be a bit much. What's next, barametric pressure? Tidal effect? Will we need to estimate what phase the moon is in as it's gravitational effect will have a slight impact on my bullets?

Don't go overboard with the bullet trajectory stuff, just fix the accuracy. There are already games out there specifically themed for realistic sniper simulation and this game has much more important aspects that can benefit from such detailed developement.

Sniping needs to be a chore. It's not an easy task so it should not be easy in game.

Sniping should be a mirror copy of the ace system.

No more 100m elevation adjustments.

If you want to hit at 300 now go up 9 minutes on a. 308.

It already is a chore. You have to find the gear, specifically an undamaged long range scope......

Making it difficult by making it unrealistically inaccurate is not the right way to go about it.

That is not what I'm proposing either.

I merely want the guns to adopt their real life accuracy values in game.

This would make all of the guns more accurate except for the mosin.

Wind would not be random and after some practice and some math taking long range shots will not be that hard.

Fix accuracy before introducing wind. I think we're on the same page.

And before all that, maybe optimize the game so that we don't have 20 FPS in cities even with i-7 CPU's :).

But I guess optimalisation is more of Beta phase concern.

Yea that can Come later once the game is feature complete.
