Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)

Recommended Posts

We don't what what they are. What we do know, is that they love human flesh.

We do indeed know that they're living humans infected with a virus that causes them to rage. Like the virus in "28 days later".

To everyone saying "zombies don't run", initially zombies were also voodoo or magic based, not disease based at all. There's a gray line in pop culture zombies between "magic undead" and "post-human infected" which is constantly being reworked in every piece of zombie-related fiction; some zombie undead like TESV Skyrim's zombies can be fast, while other "infected" zombies can be slow like The Walking Dead's Infected [although technically they are undead too, I suppose].

Still, though, out of the two kinds Undead are generally slower, more magical, and more decrepit, but have a chance of rising again, while Infected are faster, so as to facilitate spread of the disease. Thus Infected make more dangerous opponents because no matter how many times the undead rise again you can always outrun them, while Infected are essentially tireless as an ideal zombie virus spreads its disease as much as possible without concern for the health of the host. And so "Infected" zombies are better to play against in a survival game because you have to use guns on zombies you can't outrun a LOT more.

At the end of the day, both are classified as zombies, so STOP BEING ZOMBIE RACIST, EVERYONE.

The interesting semantics of Undead vs infected aside...

To me the current combination of speed, senses, damage and "health" (unhealth maybe?) are just a bit too much togethor.

If just one of those factors was tweaked back a bit I think they'd be close to the sweet spot - with one provisio. That is, as many have stated above) - the environment and stealth need to matter. The damn things glitching through walls/doors is just *ugh*, for example.

Any updates on changing settings for zombies?

Would like to see obviously more zombies, slower speed, and respawn

We know you added headshot melee, so why not try a different balancing act with zombies every week until we find something that works?

or just leave it broken until like 2015?

There's no point in making stronger zombies if their walk/run path is still broken. I'd say make slower zombies, fix their paths and wall interactions (no more wall/building glitching), and just spawn many more.

IMO it's more interesting to have hordes of zombies and having to fend them off, instead of having a couple of super strong and ultra fast zombies that you can't hit. It kinda ruins it for it.

Yes. They need to fix the Zeds walking through walls asap. Takes away from the "realism" when engaging/evading.

I'd be happy if they only fixed the wall glitch and aggro distance for now. I mean, those bastards spot you from ridiculous range.

Yesterday I found a crossbow and thought "nice, I can be stealthy while killing zeds". Think again. Once I shot a silent arrow in the back of a zed's head, here come his wife and brother. Truly defeats the purpose.

I hope they are listening, because it seems most DayZers are unhappy with the current state. Whether it was intentional or not.

A matter of opinion.

I think fast zombies are simply a cop-out. A way for film and game producers to make their zombies instantly deadly without any thought about lore, immersion, or fun!

I think slower zombies are infinetely more fun. Also in the walking dead they are more of a mid range 'jogger' almost., that can be classified as slow but a bit faster than Romero's...

For example Left 4 dead 2.. try a mod called Walking Corpses..makes the zombies slow only, but they kill in 2 or 3 swipes and are even harder than on fast mode...

Other games do fine with slow zombies , just need to increase the damage and numbers and you have more of a challenge.

The fast zombies are just shit, no tactical engagement, they are like a homing missile that just spams towards you then explodes

I'll repeat myself after many weeks. Bring back the slower zombies. The engine simply can't handle them with that speed no matter what you do. Slower zombies and quick animations when they hit you when they're closer would sound better to me.

Slower us players down and don't make the zombies look stupid and glitchy because increasing their speed just doesn't work in a way it would look authentic.

By the way, I'm fine with the Zombies, don't worry anymore.

They are easy to kill, dafuq it makes even fun, always encountering them now! :D

Just need to know how to kill 'em all these ...

Other games do fine with slow zombies

What other games?

All you people asking for hordes of slow infected need to consider a couple of things.

- Slow infected means you can avoid them, which means people will usually do that.

- Hordes or just large numbers put a huge strain on the game and will make it run less smooth.

Now, if there are hordes of infected that everyone went around killing for no special reason it would lessen the problem since the hordes would be diminished or wiped and thus less of a strain on the game. However if they're slow people are more likely to avoid them instead of wasting massive amounts of ammo or risking their life getting into melee. This leaves hordes upon hordes of slow infected that does nothing but slow down the game.

Faster infected is a compromise in part because the infected need to be dangerous, but since they can't be numerous they instead must be stronger and faster. And finally the concept of the slow, stumbling undead is based on the fact that they're actually dead and decomposing which is why they stagger slowly and fall over easily, since the tendons and muscles are among the first things to degenerate in a decomposing body.

Now instead consider living people infected with a rage virus. They will have adrenaline flowing and blood still pumping to oxygenise the muscles. They will be fast, and strong because that's the effect of the virus and adrenaline. Now, they're also unarmed and suicidal which is their weakness and compensates for the former.

Basically faster, stronger infected make sense logically and technically.

Slower weaker actual zombies make sense in other scenarios. But not here.

The only real problem at the moment is the pathing. Once the infected can't glitch through walls any more, they will be pretty much perfect from a playability and storyline point of view. Maybe some minor tweaking, but nothing drastic.

I understand that many of you really prefer the slow type of undead from the Romero movies. But think about if you want a laggy game with huge slowdowns, or if you can compromise and settle for smaller groups of more dangerous infected. Yes they did manage to run the game with several hundred infected spawned, but only after removing all loot.

If they are to go for slower hordes, something else will have to go. Higher player numbers? Loot? Animals? Vehicles? What do you suggest they leave out to be able to have those hordes that you want to see?

What other games?

Dead Island

State of decay

Left 4 dead (walking corpses Mod)

Walking Dead Survival Instinct

Arma 3: breaking point mod

Resident evil 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 all have mostly slower enemies

Silent Hill many slow enemies

You can have a mid range zombie speed as well (like a jog) . Pretty much when standalone launched they were perfect running speed, just needed the amount of them and damage cranked up. I think a bite should be fatal, and a scrape should be 30-50% Damage. Yes I believe we can have more of slower zombies and not lag just fine. The amount of zombies seen in Breaking Point's Thirsk Map for example, would be about the correct scale, and it doesnt lag, they are just too pussy zombies on that mod, we need basically:

-Standalone Zombies Attack moves and power,

-Breaking Point's zombie Amount and Horde, and

-DAY Z Standalone LAUNCH DAY Zombie SPEED.

And tracking fixed

=perfect for me. And i enjoyed the debate anyway.

Apart from the single player games you mentioned, what is different about the multiplayer games you named compared to DayZ? There are a few key things that explains why they can have slow hordes in those games. Think in terms of number of consecutive players, size of zones, other things that need to be rendered on screen in the game and so on.

well if we have 50 players per servers as a ballpark,. and 100 zombies per player, that is 5000 zombies.

I think that is doable

Stop aiming so low with your expectations.

Why can't we have large hordes and big numbers of Z's just like breaking point managed in arma 3.

If they can do it standalone can piss all over it.

Please stop them respawing so colse it's just annoying! Yes they should respawn but they should respawn away from the area about 5 mins afterwards.

So say if there are a total of 1000 zombies on server just keep it like that but spawn them in random locations not where they were just killed its mad !

Here is my feedback:

1. Zombies outrun me in a dead sprint even with no gear

2. Not sure if 1 is intentional since my buddy wit gear on is even faster than me

3. Zombies respawned to replace a zombie u dispatched often will aggro u no matter how far away they spawned or if u are LOS...this is very broken

4. Even when dispatching zombies silently the respawned replacements are hunting me down. I am not mistaking this either...literally watching them spawn outta thing air standing still backs turned to me after I Axe a zombie clear on opposite end of airfield. Freshly spawned zombie quickly turns around and runs straight for me...meanwhile 4-5 other zombies in-between myself and him do not aggro .

5.They are often able to land hits whe they are visibly out of range. I can be 10 meters in front and drop the zombie but he will score a hit even though his lunge only just began and he died without reaching me.

This will not be the first, nor the last post about this, "zombies are a pain" Running through walls, hitting you from 30 meters away while your sprinting, hitting you from downstairs while your upstairs, Cant see any zombies but you can here them then you die. Before adding more stuff to day z can you please sort the zombies out!!. I have a group of 10 that are refusing to play because they keep getting killed to zombies in stupid glitches. I bought a pc to play dayz standalone and this is destorying it for me. other than that great bloody game good job rocket and team keep up the good work ^_^

I only ever died from zombies once, It was just because I had no bandages when one hit me while I was tabbed out.
recently I have had zombies hit me from a good bit back when they are chasing me but I just zig zag.
If ten of you guys are having trouble from zombies then don't play the game.. once you see the other way more threatening bugs, you'll understand where I am coming from.

I feel you man. Just play some other games as well. There are great gamedeals on Steam. I personally hope that they would remove all of the zeds out of this game until they are done. It would feel more complete game, but now zeds just scream ALPHA to your face because they are so buggy :(

They should just fix the zombies already! Spawning them 1 foot in the air so they have to drop onto the ground would help with 50% of the issues.

Agree and the triathlon zombies that will chase through 2 or 3 towns....regardless of LoS. Hope the LoS thing is fixed before beta, might be better now...have had chance to play in about 3 weeks.

Not complaining about them being hard as more about bad behavior and bug issues. Never killed by a zombie either but having zombies die silently only to respawn 800 meters away and reveal my position is a piss poor reward for me killing one stealthily.

Not sure when the bug happens but once it triggers the zombies keep coming....I ax one silently in one hit to the head...zed does not even notice. 45 seconds later respawned zed that replaced that one has finally made his journey from the hangers to the tents and is accosting me. Meanwhile all other nearby zombies still have not aggroed...kill that one new one spawns and guns straight for me...eventually I decide to mow em all down with the M4 and just be ready to fight players off as well or just skip entire areas cause killing a straggler zombie with an ax, amphibia or crossbow silently apparently can have the same effect as if I just used my M4

You can also add COD: Black Ops 1&2. Their Zeds were fun to engage, and those fuckers leaped to get you on the second floor. I agree with your tweaks, would make killing zeds stealthily a fun sport again.

As long as they fix the wall glitching (see vid) sooner rather than later, I'll be happy.

All you people asking for hordes of slow infected need to consider a couple of things.

...snip...snip...snip...

Look. Currently zombies are faster than me, stronger than me and take more hits than me to kill. Those three factors together make them too much, IMHO.

Zeds like this don't discourage KoS or do anything else good for the game. All they do is discourage solo play and exploring (and I am an explorer by nature, dammit!). These Zeds just encourage people to team up and get firearms... Not a great combo IMHO.

Make the Zeds slightly slower or slightly weaker or slightly easier to kill and I think those aspects of Zombies will be perfect.

Which just leaves the damned glitchiness of them to be fixed. Which might wait until the actually start work on the final Zeds.

Too bad the devs are using Waterfall instead of Agile... This game would be evolving at a very rapid case if they were...

It isn't just a matter of opinion. Zombies are not a threat if you can easily run away. You can't make zombies deadly any other way except something exceptionally retarded such as invisible zombies or zombies who shoot guns at you. Slower zombies are maybe more fun if you're a bandit who likes to snipe without being disturbed

"they are like a homing missile that just spams towards you then explodes"

Lolwut? Listen, zombies can't attack at range, right? That makes them always at a loss to a combatant with a gun or a combatant who is faster than them and therefore they are no threat. You can increase the damage all you fucking want, give the zombie a one hit kill even, but if they're slow, they will never catch a player who can see them and therefore are not a threat. You would literally have to pack each street with 100+ zombies for them to be able to do anything, or else they'd have to sneak up on unaware players to kill and then we'd hear a lot of "OHH BULLSHIT GOT KILLED BY A ZOMBIE I DIDNT SEE IN 1 HIT NERF PLZ!!!!!"

If DayZ had a small, constricted linear map, slow zombies would be closer to being a threat. As it is, DayZ doesn't, and therefore they aren't. Fast zombies ARE the only way to go.
