Benefit of the doubt for gear wipes?

Recommended Posts

I think everyone has experienced this at some point or another, and I'm sure nearly everyone has gotten frustrated and whined about it at least once. However, is it possible to detect and then make good on or correct when player gear is wiped?

Everyone understands that we're working in an active Alpha project. As people participate they learn about how to report bugs, vote on bug priority, etc. Time is spent in game exploring, running, avoiding zeds and KOS players, and sometimes people literally spend hours surviving and developing their character's gear. And then "poof!" it's all gone in a flash and noone knows why. You post on the forums and people at first attempt to be helpful urging you to log back into the server you were originally on or some other vudoo, but to no avail, hours spent in game are out the window and the time you spent developing your character is gone (all food, weapons, ammo, drink, medicine, handcuffs, burlap sack, disinfectant spray, etc). This can be very frustrating.

Surely there must be some way this can be detected and corrected? Or perhaps a way to report it and get it corrected? Or the equivalent of GM's that can help or something? I've come to the conclusion that posting anything about this at all on the General forums is a complete waste of time and a distraction to other topics (never mind what a draw it is for trolls!), so I looked around and found the suggestions forum and thought it best to pose the idea here. Surely there must be a better way. Paid customers willing to participate in an Alpha project should be taken care of, surely there's a way to make good and give them the benefit of the doubt in these situations rather than leaving them high and dry?

"We're working in an active Alpha project"

That's exactly why this is happening.. It's in alpha and it will be fixed eventually. I doubt someone is going to go to EVERY single person that has lost their gear. Remember, over 1.5 million people have bought this game. I have lost my gear multiple times, but in all honesty, it doesn't phase me. I enjoy looting cause of the excitement, as should you. Sure I hate the running but so does everyone else. I doubt theres a system that would do that anyways, unless they spend time developing one, when it would be a waste of resources. Take a break, come back later when char wipes are less previlant.

Also there are routine char wipes, or so Rocket said there would be.

I used to get char whiped a lot more than I do now, and I am satisfied on how the game is for an Alpha. Seriously, one of the best alpha's  I have played. Ever. Back on track though, it would be a waste of massive resources just to create a system that would have no need in the full game when char whiping is fixed.

We've all lost gear, we've all been reset.

People are here to test, really. It's just extra, unnecessary effort for the developers/whoever to constantly go in-game and restore the lost gear of players. There would be thousands upon thousands upon thousands of reports each day. I highly doubt any system like you have suggested will be implemented.

This is all database and log driven, is it not? There must be a way to detect if someone did not die and has no gear but HAD certain gear before that *something* couldn't be done. You don't need to give them exactly what they had before, but something to "make good" and not leave them naked and starving. An example, if it's possible to detect someone had a certain level of gear but didn't die, outfit them in a standard way - such as with a splitting ax, a 45 magnum with 6 bullets, and something to eat & drink. Databases support things such as cursors, queries, and triggers - surely it *must* be possible and not overly difficult to, while we're in this sensitive alpha period, identify when someone had "something" that took them time to obtain and simply make good via minimally re-outfitting them. That is simply software and databases and what they are intended to do in the first place, I would struggle to grasp that's at all difficult or problematic. A simple proc with a rule that states, "Is this person completely naked? Yes? Well did they die? No? Well did they have something of the following nature? Yes? Ok, they shouldn't be naked, give them this basic outfit package, because although it's not what they had before, it's better than nothing."

I don't see why any reports would be needed at all - it could/should be automated to at least somewhat correct cases where people were wiped but never died and clearly should not be naked. The only time it would make sense for people to be wiped would be when a global wipe was announced. Today from what I've experienced and seen on the forums it seems to be fairly random - those random cases I would have to imagine could be at least detected via a simple litmus test and if not corrected in whole at least corrected in spirit by giving the player the benefit of the doubt via a minimal (possibly random) outfitting of food/drink and meelee/firearm.

My preaching here is that there is a very large difference between an alpha/beta where everyone are merely testers and not paid customers. DayZ SA has a rather unique scenario where they have paid customers who have already supported the product and are wishing / hoping their monetary support is appreciated and not ignored. An opinion of "the customer is always right, give them the benefit of the doubt" would go a long way for people who've paid for the product already, alpha or not. That's just good business sense.

I didn't also realize that this was a known bug, and actually something like the 6th highest on the voting ranking by the community.

If it can't/won't be fixed anytime soon at least introducing a means to detect and make good on it would go a long way with the community.

I for one don't get mad at it, I've had my character reset once and I was completely fine with it and I knew what had happened as soon as I appeared on the coast.

Just enjoy looting again. The aim of the game is to survive. That doesn't mean you have to go and shoot every person you see in your super fully geared level 85 character character.

Why don't you try something new? I've been playing (and surviving, mind you) with nothing but a handgun and no backpack for the past 10 hours.

Inception summed this up perfectly.

My preaching here is that there is a very large difference between an alpha/beta where everyone are merely testers and not paid customers.

The thing I have noticed Crowbar, is that this is a unique alpha. Their practises are different.

We paid half price for a full game, in a pre-alpha status. It is upon ourselves whether we decide to test the pre-alpha while it is in pre-alpha or play the game or just wait for release.

Those that "play the game" are having trouble due to frustration with bugs and everything that goes with it. In due time these problems will be ironed out :)

I have never tried an alpha/beta before, but I do understand the direction the devs have gone with. It is only in the benefit of the game, the community and the devs. Maybe this particular alpha is not for you?

I do feel your pain though Crowbar, since the latest patch I have died more unfairly than any other  :(

No. Your request is invalid.

Rule#1 of DayZ- do not get attached to your gear.

Rule #2: It's Alpha, Bitches.

Thing is, looting is dayz at the moment, the zombies aren't fun to kill. We are unable to shoot them because when we shoot one five more coming running from twelve miles away.

Losing gear due to char reset is frustrating.But. Using previous version gear with unexpected bugs is mind blowing. I always commit suicide after an update and i recently meet players(with fancy gear) requesting killing them.

Take these rules seriously especially the second one.

Why would you, as a developer, take time out of your busy schedule to do this? There's no benefit to them whatsoever, and we as players really don't need our gear back that badly.

How about this...We get notified when our gear will be wiped...It happens, were told a week before hand...Everyone can go full derp for a week, and have some real fun!

When I heard a rumor  some old update would come with a wipe, I told my clan..."Men, I'm so sorry, but will all die, in 1.5 weeks time... LETS DO SOME CRAZY ASS SHIT"  And guess what? We had the best time of our lives in dayz!
