Thirdthorpe 87 Posted March 25, 2014 So I was just on a thread related to food when I got the notion of taking several fruits of the same kind and combining them with a jar and boiling water near a fire to make fruit preserves. This would take several inventory-slots worth of fruit and combining them into one slot similar to canned food that can be used several times (75%, 50%, 25%) and also not require a can opener.
So Sexy 259 Posted March 25, 2014 It would take quite some time tho.

Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted March 25, 2014 I think i heard rumors that beign able to make marmelade out of fruit, preserve them as dry food and have your pickles in vinegar is going tobe implemented in the future,i don't have any sources to support my claim though. Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted March 25, 2014 Game's all about survival,so a good cooking system is of high importance IMO.
mgc 92 Posted March 25, 2014 (edited) Game's all about survival,so a good cooking system is of high importance IMO. I suppose I'm approaching this to much from a game mechanic point of view.At what point is the system good enough iyo? Edited March 25, 2014 by mgc

Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted March 25, 2014 Can't tell is serious. Beans anyway.I think he talked about it in a stream or something so i can't be positive sure.Yet this rumor about advanced cooking and food preservations has been going on for a while now.Mgc i can't answer to what point the cooking system is good enough, when cooking is not yet implemetned.... aknar 13 Posted March 25, 2014 Ah the sheer absurdity of the concept ^^' The survivalist that can't survive more than a week, taking the time to make some jam and preserves over his mother's old stove. It seems really far fetched for a game where you are constantly running away form zombies or from food source to food source.Maybe this would be the first business of the new world, a jam based economy :'D Not really convinced ^^'

Yeah, I think preserving just means cooking raw food and eventually even salting it. That must be as far as it goes
Damnyourdeadman 1045 Posted March 25, 2014 (edited) Well they can be found as loot in houses, because they take time to spoil. In a world with no electricity, food preservation could mean the diference between life and death. Here's the data: http://www.eatbydate.com/other/condiments/how-long-does-jam-last-shelf-life-expiration-date/ Edited March 25, 2014 by Damnyourdeadman
mgc 92 Posted March 25, 2014 If were going to add preservation, we've also have to add food spoiling. ""Mgc i can't answer to what point the cooking system is good enough, when cooking is not yet implemetned...."" Use your imagination.
enforcer1975 1111 Posted March 25, 2014 You don't really need a can, a sealed jar schould do the job as well. But if you didn't already stock a supply of post apocalyptic food it's too late to do that when it already broke out. Doing that stuff is time consuming. One meal i could think of are jerkies or as aknar said...cured meat..not really nutricious. And the wrong type of food for such a case because you should have stocked food with a high calorie count. Chips and canned beer won't do just to exxagerate a bit.
Thirdthorpe 87 Posted March 25, 2014 Actually I really should have elaborated. I remember at one point walking through what looked like some type of orchard close to the shore. I had this thought of fruit growing on trees but then I thought about how nice it would be if a player could take five apples and combine them with a jar to make canned apples. I would really love to be able to play this game without ever needing to step foot in a city to scavenge for cans of food and other various supplies. I would love the ability to become completely self-sustaining once you pick up a few key peices of equipment.
Pvt_Larry (DayZ) 98 Posted March 25, 2014 Do we really need a million varieties of food?imo cooking is highly overrated. One day the game is going to be more oriented on actual survival, with hunting, cooking etc, instead of just hunting for cans the whole time.
