Anyone else hide weapons to prevent others from looting them?

Recommended Posts

I only do that if I find a worn or pristine scope and don't need it.

I found two mosins, an SKS, and a sportster, and hid all but one in some bushes, solely so others couldn't get them and use them against me.

I do this all the time just for fun. Usually dropping the items in a little more obvious place than in a bush. I also detach M4 parts and scatter them around  B)

On regular or HC servers..not experimental

For those who do think it is dickish, do you hide someone's corpse after you kill them? Or leave it there so others can have gear too?

I just leave it there since its no threat to me anymore... I might pick some stuff of it that I need like food or water but for the rest I really don't care.

Some bambi might get lucky and find it but by then i'm long gone and if i'm not long gone then its a dead bambi.

The point is tho that your hiding guns on experimental which limits other peoples chance to experiment / test things.

And that hinders our ability to report and have shit fixed so in the end your not hurting anybody but yourself and the community at large.

TL:DR

Don't hide guns on the test / experimental servers otherwise people can't test those guns.

Waste of time and effort why try to hide something that will reset every 2-4 hours? Shouldn't you be doing something more productive with your virtual life?

It takes maybe 30 seconds, out of a character that will last for 10-15 hours. What else should I be doing in Dayz with that 30 seconds? Running?

So why are you playing DayZ? To socialise? The core mechanics are about a grim Fight for survival, not hello zombie online.

The game is however you play it. If you want to socialize rather than play elektro call of duty then all the power to you. Lots of people remain unseen up in the woods and its how they play.

You can find evry weapons we don't need into a bush somewhere or (until they fix it) INTO a wall...

Actually this game need less weapons and more less ammo i'm just helping dev lead this game in the right direction  ^_^

@OP

If I ever found myself using my precious gaming time hiding virtual loot from potentially being found by other players I'd be so depressed I'd probaby kill myself. But, I spent about 40 minutes a couple of weeks ago watching a movie called Sharknado so wtf do I know. I'll never get those 40 minutes back but I just couldn't tear my eyes away from watching Iain Zering embarrasing himself.

More power to ya!

Haha I just found a shotgun in a bush near Shakhovka. Probably was just a guy carrying it in hand in case he found a hack saw, but it would be funny if it was someone that was trying to hide it that dropped it there.

I dont get it.. what makes him using this tactic so "sad"?

Is it sad the fact that it is so HARD for you now to find a gun because some guy outsmarted you?

Oh so now your agenda comes out....

Your mad that a player is smart enough to use a tactic like this and it makes it harder for little ol you to find a gun....

I'm just curious why you think he should be worried at all about whether he "screws over" some random survivor that would kill him in a sec?

Yeah the OP really shouldn't be worried about that little thing called perma-death...

He should probably just run up to you and let you head shot him right? That would probably be a better tactic.

Firstly, relax your taking this way way too seriously, there is no need to get this angry over my opinion, you can disagree with me if you feel like it, but being a jerk won't solve anything. Also before nit picking my opinion at least acknowledge were I had a good point, like I will do now. Yes while it can be a smart tactic it depends where and when it is used. Is it smart after a server reset on Stable? Yes. Is it smart at any time on experimental? No.

I will admit, I was maybe a little apprehensive about this guys actions when I originally posted, but I now see what part of him doing this bugs me so much.

The fact he does it in experimental.

I won't care if he did it on the stable branch, but by doing this on servers designed for testing much more so than the Stable branch, is just going to slow down testing in the long run. I have no issue with him playing in experimental, but he shouldn't be restricting other access to weapons , especially because of the lack of experimental servers and that these weapons may be needed for testing.

He should play on Stable Branch if he wants to use this tactic, not on a server for testing.

It's his waste of time not yours...

Not sure why you are so concerned about how he chooses to "waste" his time or why that makes you get emotional enough to feel sad about it.

"sad" is an expression. I don't care if he wastes his time.

They arent a threat because they dont have a weapon yet, you know the thing the OP is hiding that you say is a waste of time...

What are you going on about now...

Seriously?  your telling the OP he shouldnt be afraid of people with guns? When did armed players start not being a threat?

So just having a gun means you can "outshoot" someone? Does that make even a little bit of sense to you?

Armed players start becoming a threat when they're a better player than you. My point is, I am not afraid of letting other people getting guns because I enjoy the competition and am not afraid of someone just because they have a gun. Most of the people in this game are scared little bitches in a straight up gun fight anyway... hence why they would spend hours of time hiding guns from other players.

I do the same on stable, pick up every bit of ammo and guns i find and toss them in the woods. 60 round M4 magazine, to the lake with you, pistol, in that tree, :).

I do this whenever I have the time or opportunity. Mags and boxes get emptied if I don't need them, and I also take valuable loot like ACOGS and MP stocks that my group doesn't need and place them in the middle of nowhere.

If I find an M4 I take it apart and throw the parts around in random places.

I enjoy doing this too much.

Firstly, relax your taking this way way too seriously,

hey the internet is serious business!

but being a jerk won't solve anything.

Wow calling me a jerk...

when was I a jerk exactly? Can you point to me the post that insulted you? Or were you just saying that out of spite?

Also before nit picking my opinion at least acknowledge were I had a good point, like I will do now.

As soon as you make one I will. Still waiting for that to happen...

Let me let you in on a little secret...

Experimental branch isnt just to test one playstyle and see how it affects the game. Its to test MULTIPLE playstyles and tactics. That means if alot of people are hiding weapons that needs to be tested on experimental so It can be either tweaked or left alone depending on what the DEV's are going for.

I'm sorry, but both branches are for testing and I would argue that this tactic should be tested on experimental even more than stable just so the dev can tweak the mechanics if they so choose.

I'm sorry, but both branches are for testing and I would argue that this tactic should be tested on experimental even more than stable just so the dev can tweak the mechanics if they so choose.

Why would the Dev's need to test this type of play style at all? In Essence what this guy is taking items and moving them. What are the Dev's going to do? Ban people from dropping more than one item every 5 minutes? While as you say, Experimental can be used as a way to test play styles and their impact on the game, as well as changes to the game to accommodate the playstyle if needed but, that it is not it's main purpose.

By far it's main purpose is to test the patches before they go onto Stable, so bugs can be rooted out early by those who play on the experimental servers. Stable is also used to find bugs as well as a test to see if the update can stand up with many more people playing on that update.

While experimental is not just for testing, after all people do play on there, what is wrong with OP's actions is not his tactics, or his play style, but the fact he restricts access to weapons people MAY use to test for bugs, glitches etc on experimental servers. Again I would not care if he did it on stable, but the problem is that his playstyle is restricting the ability for others to test on servers which are mostly for testing. Yes I have no doubt that the tactic will one day work for him, but at the moment, it mostly restricts testing and nothing more.I am not going to ask him to stop but to be mindful of the type of servers he is on, especially with so few experimental servers.

The other main problem in have with OP's tactic is that in the long run, it will become less useful. When're respawning loot is added, it will be more difficult for this tactic to be used effectively, of course this will depend on the item respawning rate. At the moment the tactic will work fairly well depending in the time he does it, so basically the closer to just after server restart the better.

Also for some elaboration, I misspoke when I called you a jerk, I didn't mean you specifically, just the way you replied. Your tone was fairly condescending with no acknowledgement of my points which didn't agree with your views. I attempted to do the opposite in my last post and this one, where I feel I did a better job. I may not do this well, but at least I try, when you really don't, from what I have noticed, though I may be wrong, and if I do feel free to call me out.

No I have never done this as I am a man and not scared of fighting people. Did you used to combat log when you heard gunshots too?

Loot spawning system is not implemented, so whatever, enjoy it while it lasts.

Why bother with weapons? It takes too much time. I do this with ammo instead when I know there are people around. You can't fire a boomstick without bullets.

I agree on the experimental servers issue however. You are not doing anyone (that includes players and developers) any favours by hiding items on experimental servers, to be quiet frank that is a rather idiotic thing to do, since those servers are purely for testing purposes.

Today I logged into Svetlo on Experimental and the town was unlooted. Knowing how bone dry experimental servers are for loot, I proceeded to loot the whole town. I found two mosins, an SKS, and a sportster, and hid all but one in some bushes, solely so others couldn't get them and use them against me. I felt guilty doing it, but if someone picks up that other mosin, they're going to compete with me for finding ammo, or they're going to shoot me in the head with it. Also, if no one picks it up, they are visibly less of a danger to me since I can easily see they don't have a gun (whether they have ammo for it or not).

I also do the same at military bases. I'm just wondering how common this tactic is.
