Suggestion to Server Admins; Pro-Tempore Global Chat

Recommended Posts

Right, so, by the Topic title you can see this suggestion's more for the server admins than the devs.  While we don't have global chat on SA servers, some of us DO have walkie-talkies.  Therefore I propose that server admins might like to choose and pronounce what frequency to find global chat on their handsets in their welcome messages.

"Welcome to our server, global chat is found on xx.xx."

Thoughts?

More like "Welcome to our server, you MUST connect to TS! xxx.xxx.xxx"

No, that's going to lead to bullshit that eliminates the point of having removed global chat in the first place.

Have you played the DayZ mod? Honestly? If you did, you'd know how fucking annoying global chat is, and why it's nothing but an immersion-breaking cheat tool.

It has its ups and downs.  In reality, wouldn't some jackass get hold of a radio transmitter and babble?  The radio only has a range of (I think...?) 10 kilometers, so it's not like a be-all-end-all global chat.  Imagine when you first join a server that you read on the side of a building someone's spraypainted the radio frequency.  Wouldn't you check it out? If it's getting on your nerves, just switch frequencies or turn off your radio. Or throw it out. You don't have to listen.

Well see, there you go- less global than global chat, yet still a viable option to see if there are any friendlies before you charge headfirst into a town.

" Welcome to our server, why don't you effing buy your own. You're kicked. "

Well, I dunno about you but I certainly wouldn't rent a server just to play alone or with allies only.  I like the threat of overly-aggressive CoD/BF children "veterans" lurkin' about.  And you know, as many times as I've gotten that greeting you're talking about, I've never been kicked- do admins not have that power?

Just to quote one Admin who posts on these forums:

<< no one plays on my servers unless i play on my own or with trusted players ..every fucker is potentially cheating  >>

Funny thing is, he's telling the truth - couple of weekends ago I saw someone was on his server ALL alone, ALL Saturday night, so I went over to invite him to mine, because our server was a teen nightclub.. lot of action, with some kind of military dudes trying to impose order and a bunch of anarchists doing ANYTHING at ALL

So I went on that Admins server to say hello - him being all ALONE on Saturday Night, and I was kicked in the time it took to see it was INDEED the server Admin..

Like the dude says .. NO ONE PLAYS ON MY SERVERS UNLESS I PLAY ON MY OWN ..

You think that's sad? I think that's sad.. but he doesn't want to come out to play.. OK

Try going on servers that have 5 players or less, on Saturday night (if you WANT to do that). See what happens...  Plenty will kick you if there is an admin on line. But a new game is to get eyes on you first, so they can kick you and then kill your body and get the loot. Others just kick because its a 'private' club server and they feel they have the right.

But it's nice to see that some servers have started a "we do NOT kick, everyone welcome" policy, in reaction.

And I'd like to see keyboard-only sidechat - because bit-by-bit it builds a community, and tends to hold players to the same servers.

Teamspeak does not.

I'm glad you said that because I used to help administrate a server with a really strong community for a couple of months, and everyone was really cool. There were disagreements, but because we had spent so much time talking with each other and learning about each other we always stuck together when jackasses and PKers or cheaters came in and started wrecking camps or new-spawns, etc.  It was really cool to be a part of that community.

All you need is here : http://dayz.gamepedia.com/WalkieTalkie

It is suggested that players that want to speak "publically" use the default frequency of 87.8 - once other player communication is setup it is wise and polite to move to one of the unused frequencies so not to "bleed over" the default "public" channel.

Mhmm, I read the wiki page before I made the post.  I just thought it might be better for the admin to set the global chat to something other than the default so someone who's carrying a walkie doesn't have to listen to 'global chatter' by default.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with it.  some people feel like it breaks immersion, but honestly it doesn't.  In a situation like this survivors are going to find a way to communicate.
