Pre-outbreak life

Recommended Posts

There's a topic about sniping where one user mentioned that characters are not military trained and aiming should be more difficult.

I like that idea, but... what if we could choose a profession our character was in before the outbreak and that profession has its traits?

E.g. if our guy was a professional soldier, then make aiming easier for him (well actually, leave it as it is, but make it harder for civilians). If he was a lumberjack, he is stronger with melee weapons, farmer consumes only 10-20% of food and water instead of 25%, hunter moves more silently, policeman is faster, fireman climbs ladders and steps faster, engineer takes less time to craft something, doctors already know their blood type, and use less medication and bandages (like farmer with food), and so on...

I think that would be a cool thing to have in character customization, and would make a game more realistic, cause we all have our strenghts and weaknesses in real life.

Problem with this is everyone will choose soldier. Unless they do it similar to Lord of the Rings online, where you choose profession and it takes hours and hours to learn it, when you are done you can choose another skill to learn. So the soldier might have to hit something like 1000 zombies, head shots, to achieve steadier hand.

This is not the worst of ideas, but it opens up for MASSIVE exploits tbh.

If they make "classes" and one of them is slightly better then the others, nobody will pick the others tbh.

What they need to do is make everybody start out the same and then have slowly progressing skills, like cooking food will slowly make you more effecient at it, repairing stuff would slowly make you more effecient and so on.

As long as it doesnt affect aiming, shooting or anything like that.

Those should be completely player skill based, ie the dude behind the screen should have total control and not be helped by the game.

I like the idea of slowly progression, but it should only affect certain parts of the game tbh.

Some parts should still be 100% player controlled, so its skill based and you arent being helped by the game to make you better.

Not everyone will choose the soldier (me for exemple, i prefer to be a medic, archer, hunter, civilian or whatever).

In any mmo, every people don't choose to be the warrior, some like me prefer the archer, and some others prefer medic/priest in first choice etc... (i know that we are not in a medieval game, just an example) and in a game like dayz. Be a soldier will not be preferable especially if Z are attracted by gunshots in a world where ammo/guns will be less present.

But people will still chose the one who has the most benefits, over any other, in general :)

But if theres a soldier class and this class shoots and aims better then the rest, 90% of all players will pick this, simply because they can kill players easier.

You might fall into the 10% category, but it doesnt change the fact the rest of the players doesnt think like you do, and will go with the one who can kill other players "the easiest".

Isn't choosing your past also a part of creating your own story?

Well that's not really my point, killing a 1000 zombies would improve any player's accuracy and skill with the gun.

Then make "professions" (I don't like calling them classes) have weaknesses as well as traits. For a soldier, a trait could be bigger accuracy like said before, and the weakness could be not being able to craft more difficult things. Or I don't know, give soldiers PTSD so they need to take some kind of pills, or smoke/drink often, or when sleep (if) gets implemented into the game, make soldiers sometimes wake up shaking and feeling cold, not being able to sleep again until they are fed, hydrated, warm and indoors for feeling safe. .
