Checking ammo

Recommended Posts

Hey there, I'm new to dayz so please excuse the noob question.

I've found an sks but have no clue how much ammo is in it. Is there any way to check how much ammo I have in the clip?

Thanks, George.

You either empty it and then reload it to give it a full mag(then you have 10rds in it), fire it randomly till it runs dry (then you have no ammo in it) or use a stripper clip which tells you because it acts like a magazine.

Indeed, there should be an option to check your ammo. In fact HUD should not tell you number of bullets unless you press a certain button which would cause you to open or take mag out and check. Source mod "Resistance and Liberation" has this implemented and it's bloody awesome :)

I think it should remain so that you don't see how much ammo is in a gun with an internal magazine. It should be up to you to remember how much you've shot.

hopefully in the future you will be able to check your ammo by holding R and then you can count the bullets in the mag or something like that, like in "No More Room In Hell" that would be cool.

This doesn't work if you've picked up the gun though, if someone has already shot from it then I have no clue how much is left

In which case you should pull the magazine and look :)  I think that is the way it needs to be.  When you find a gun the first thing you are going to do is open the breach and see if it is loaded.  If it is then you would pull the magazine and see if there are any rounds in it.

Yeah, but with rifles like the sks it doesn't have to have a mag, it can just be chambered in :/ With other guns I understand that you can look at the mag but with the sks and moisin it's a problem

I own an sks and an m44(which for the purposes of this conversation is the same as the mosin in game), and you cannot tell how many rounds are left in them without either firing them, or releasing the catch on the bottom of the mag(dumps all the rounds out the bottom). The problem with "pulling the mag" out of these guns is that the only way to do that is to disassemble them. Stripper clips make no sense in this game because you dont leave the stripper clip in the gun, it only acts as a way to reload the weapon faster.

"Look at the mag" or "Look in the mag" is also oversimplified. With some mags you can see into them and distinguish the amount of cartridges up to like 5 or 6, after that it becomes more of a guess, because the cartridges block out your view. So you could either estimate, by weight, remember how many rounds you have fired, or empty the mag, count the cartridges and fill it back up..
