Crafting, the future and what *you* want to see

Recommended Posts

It's obvious we're going to get a more in-depth crafting recipes and such as the game is fleshed out, I wanted to put my two beans in on what I want in and I want to hear what y'all want/don't want too.

For starters, I'd like to see tools take use in crafting. I want those rusty pliers I've been toting around to be useful dammit! Also! Pocket knives of varying types and quality. Personally, I'd think it would be ideal for fresh spawns to start with a very basic one that has it's uses limited to 1. terrible weapon that breaks easily 2. can opener that breaks easily 3. simple wood gathering tool used to gather fire wood and wooden sticks from trees, perhaps even foliage as well so you could craft your own (obviously homemade) ghillie suit if you were so inclined. Different knives could have say, a built in can opener along with those uses, or screw drivers you could use to attach a scope to a gun.

Sounds simple right? It would be the bedrock of crafting if they added them. Carve wooden sticks into spears, have particular trees drop bigger branches that could be carved into clubs, which could then be studded with nails if you have them (and a hammer) etc. Of course, don't make weapons you can craft as good as axe-tier stuff though.

Any thoughts?

I think there is a reason for the pliers and hammers and screwdrivers and splitting axes, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

What would be fun is to find some cables to rewire stuff like cars, lamps, lights, alarms etc.

I'd love to have a bike with an alarm attached to it, blaring on full blast and drawing like a horde of zombies after it right into your enemies' lair :P

Or also to make your own bullets out of iron or something. If you have to think real basics, I;d love to see some McGyvery stuff.

Well, everything I read so far is all about weapons and weaponizing stuff... now take into account that this is a survival game, focusing on.. uhm... survival..?

Build my own canteens, containers, sew my own burlap sacks, hell, for all I know I want to build a fruit-juicer. If you get a cold and drink Orange Juice you get healthy again.

Stuff like that would be fun. Tripwires and Landmines are a nice idea, but landmines ain't gonna happen unkess they actually introduce pooping, and then goodness beware, it's the smell that's gonna kill you on the coast :-P

To the OP's question, I really think a well layered crafting system will add a ton of fun to this game. I play largely as a survivor and would love to see 'survival crafting' vs gathering finished goods as we have today. I think we need to get persistent storage in place first though as that's a key to giving it the depth it deserves. Snares, fishing, hunting, fire craft, etc will definitely add some interest - and having to cross a map to get a critical supply will keep populations all over the map.

@makomachine, I totally agree. First persistent storage, then bases. And inbetween, add hunting and other assorted happies.

That might add blankets and wearable clothes by skinning the poor things. I'm all up for that. And hey, at some point, why not be able to tame animals like goats or bulls or whatever, they might give milk.

Yeah, I know, I'm taking three steps into the future when we are still 2 steps behind, but hey, one can dream, right?

Crafting knives out of bone, wood and stone.

I don't know why I want this so bad, but I just do.

I would like to be able to have exclusive craftable clothing (not found on the loot table)

To be able to install a CCTV Camera system around Elektro and spy on people ^^ .

Having molotovs would be hot (literally),pvc tube bombs/nades.

And last but not least, concealed spike traps along the grasslands of Chernarus.

Vietcong style

What I would really like to see is less 'complete' items and more ones that you have to make yourself. For example, they should make headtorches very rare but make it very easy to get a torch, hat and duct tape and then boom! home made head torch!

I'm having trouble now thinking of other examples. Maybe rather than having a weapons cleaning kit you should a screwdriver, rags, oil, etc etc. Basically what I am saying is rather than finding things and having them at hand right away you should be forced to make them yourself.

Of course there are also weapons as well. You could make your own or you could modify existing ones. Take your baseball bat, add some nails with a hammer and then you have a spiked club that does double damage. Then, of course, you could make explosives by emptying bullets into a tin with some nails or buckshot and adding a fuse or by creating molotov cocktails by using empty bottles, rags, gasoline and matches.

I would like crafting to be extensive, so extensive that you couldn't remember them all yourself. I want to look into my backpack, see a bunch of junk and think to myself "what could I make with these?" then experiment and surprise myself with my creativity.

Rather than collecting a load of base materials and spend hours mc-ing my way up the tech tree, I'd find the finished product somewhere.

I think having to hit town now and again is a far more appealing yet more uncertain grind.

The creative aspect should imo be covered by base and vehicle building.

Sebidee, I absolutely LOVE the idea of a baseball bat spiked with nails. A friend of mine actually has one of them and they look so gnarly and vicious! Completely neglecting the fact that rusty nails also may give you some infection, if you get hit but survive the attack

I want to be able to take a bayonet of any sort, a branch from a tree, and then smooth out the branch into a nice, long stick with the bayonet or knife, and then use ducktape to tape the knife to the edge of my creation.

Or, I want to be able to make a set of goggles, with one side being a Long Range Scope. When I pull them down, with an easy to click button, I can easily survey the area while appearing badass. Perhaps Binoculagoggles?

I want to be able to spray poisons like disinfectant spray or the juice from specific berries onto my arrows, so that I can deal extended, long range, potentially fatal damage from a distance with a bow made by myself.

I want to be able to wear a cloak made out of the skin of a deer I have killed. I will look as tribal as possible. Maybe even a slain bear or other rare, dangerous animal could be fashioned into an intimidating outfit that would be prized around Chernarus.

""I want to be able to take a bayonet of any sort, a branch from a tree, and then smooth out the branch into a nice, long stick with the bayonet or knife, and then use ducktape to tape the knife to the edge of my creation.""

Completing a crafting recipe is only creative in the most basic sense. For true creativity we need non cookie cutter construction.

edit:

Unfortunately "real" crafting is going to be impossible because it requires physics.

The best I can come up with atm is shaping the individual parts before they are combined. I would connect values to how well the parts are shaped that influence the efficiency of the constructed item. This means predetermining an optimal shape / material and actual knowledge / skill in approaching it. The predetermined values would have to be very realistic and the comparison thorough to get a level of realism comparable to the other items.

Shaping a part could be done by placing it on a (saw) table which triggers a method that provides fine control and compares the part to the selected secret mold. The efficiency percentage achieved is of course also secret.

I just want to be able to use a crowbar to bust open locked doors and/or knock someone unconscious without killing them.

...or wrap duct tape around my m4 stock or handgaurd to upgrade it from badly damaged to damaged.

...or attach some fishing line to a bunch of old cans and make a tripwire that creates a racket when someone runs through a doorway.

...or take fishing line, duct tape and a long stick to make my own bow.

...or use a staple gun to staple a note to a door or side of a building (guess you could tack it up with duct tape too).

Yeah, that'd be really cool. I like the spear idea. Maybe it snaps in half after a few hits and you're left with two wooden sticks, you know? I like the pocket knife idea, too. I like the idea of using your crappy knife as a can opener. Definitely would give people a better chance of being able to eat if they get off the coast right away. And you should *definitely* be able to get wooden sticks by cutting branches off of trees with those knives, too. Better chance of making a splint, and better than crawling to the nearest town and looking around for morphine for hours and hours.

Personally I'd like to see complex and authentic 'minigames' used in, say, hooking up the electrical systems for your base or fixing a car engine. Another cool thing would be programmable security systems. Basically I want people with real life expertise to become important. There could be manuals put into the game for those that dont know about fixing these sorts of things. That would give people (me ;) ) a chance to learn something practical from the game.

I guess what I'm hoping for is an actual survival sim that forces you to learn and adapt, instead of some weird game/simulator chimera. Of course some things need to be simplified, but it would be cool if you could actually learn something from the game.
