Chernarus is based off of a real location in the Czech Republic. Which also, interestingly, used to be called Bohemia. Hence Bohemia Interactive Studios. The Czech Rep. is located a good distance from Russia. While it may have its similarities, it is not Russian. It is Czech if anything.

@ OP: I agree. Though in the beginning, not having a background in any ArmA game, I thought it was supposed to be a part of Russia myself. It wasn't until I saw the post that showed the Google street views of Chernaurus that I realized it was part of the Czech Republic.

Well, it is a post-soviet state, and on Arma 2, a rebel group by the name of the ChernaRussian Movement of the Red Star wanted to change Chernarus's government into communism. That, and Chernarus is on borders with Russia. See here on this Arma 2 map.

If we are talking Russian or Czech, the Czech Rep. is not a post-soviet state. Its is Slavic, that has had some relations with Russia over the many years. At one point they were all part of the Warsaw pact, but never were they under Soviet control or occupation.

 

There is an underlying history of tension between Czechs and Russians that has mostly dissolved in current days, but many years ago a Russian would have been quite offended to be confused with a Czech and vice versa.

Well, don't consider the story but consider its geography. That, and it's just a fictional country based on the landscape on Czech, not its history. The history is entirely different. Chernarus suffered three civil wars and since the USSR dissolved, Chernarus had to rely on its agriculture for its economy. Not like the Czech Rep where they have resources. This is why you would see people still with the communist ideals such as the rebel groups and the graffiti.

We know this is a video game. I don't know why people use that sentence. If we wouldn't know the difference between a game and reality, then we might as well be schizophrenic   ;)

 

We're talking about its story and events because we want to. It's not as if we must put it into our daily lives.
