Friendlies are plentiful in DayZ- At least, for me

Recommended Posts

I hear a lot of stuff about KoS. It is primarily complaining about it, suggesting (terrible) humanity / morale systems, and bashing those who do it. Now, getting shot on sight can be frustrating, but friendlies do exist in DayZ.

I am either a very charismatic and likeable guy (this is unlikely) or most players I meet are just really nice and not looking to murder everyone they see (this is likely.) Sometimes, I even get lucky, encountering armed men who run into me. The best part? They don't shoot at me, even from being startled. Several times I have met friends and joined groups with random people I've met, a good few of them being armed. Two guys with M4's, fully customized, all pristine, for example, let me join up with them and head to NEAF, where I found a Long Range Scope and acted as their bait (a bit inhumane, but, hey, they were the ones with the guns).

Other people I have met were even cooler. One guy I encountered had a clan of like, 8, on the server. We met up with them, I grabbed myself a mosin, and made our way from Berenzino to NWAF. A long, tiring walk, but worth the loot. By the time we got there, I had made numerous friends and had yet to be shot in the back or mistreated or whatever you want to call it- I was literally invited into the clan afterwards, despite being some random guy they had met in Berenzino.

One guy I met was on Experimental, who was in Elektro, when I was running around shouting on my mic about books and how I was the librarian and was here to confiscate all the missing books. I joined him, collecting all the books I could. We later starved to death in Chernogorsk. Fun.

I've yet to backstab anyone, though I have been backstabbed once before. Other then that, most people I have met have either not shot at me, left me alone, or embraced me. I've been killed on sight, I think, two - three times, and I've been playing for 60+ hours. Maybe I'm just lucky. Maybe I am full of charisma. Maybe its because I play on Hardcore servers with a 60% - 70% population.

In all of my time on DayZ it has been 50/50 in the rate where I encounter a friendly and a hostile.

I also play on Hardcore servers and my experience is not unlike yours, though I have yet to meet with any clans.  Sounds awesome!

I've been one of those guys who has the jump on someone, is armed, and doesn't murder them. I ran into a guy sitting down in a piano house once and I had my fire-axe out. Didn't even hurt him. I just told him to calm down and I wasn't gonna hurt him, then I left. Didn't get a bullet in the back either.

I ran into two new players within a few days this week. One was a younger kid and one was probably a guy my age. I gave both of them advice on the game and I helped them out. Had a nice little chat, and we all left unharmed.

I honestly can't think of a time where I back-stabbed someone. I've been back-stabbed, but then I kill them though.

There certainly isn't a lack of friendlies out there, I agree. I think it's just that you have to be super-careful, because that "friendly" will sometimes try to put a bullet in your head. But that doesn't mean you should be too scared to even try to interact with people. I honestly don't mind different playstyles like KoS, because if they shoot at me, then I'll just shoot back. Simple. Personally, I think the people who KoS are missing out on some good fun in DayZ.

Most of my deaths from other players are by... well.... Recently I've only died in big gun fights and that's it. Both of them were at the NW Airfield.

EDIT: btw, I think you're lucky to have had that many positive encounters. There are friendlies in this game, but there's no denying that some people will try to kill you in an instant.

Yeah, my experiences have been overwhelmingly positive as well.  I'm probably due to lose all of my gear now that I've said something.   Better go log in.

Cool, you made a thread about something that has already been discussed to death on the forums.

The issue is it has already been discussed to death in MANY threads.  It could have been written in a previously created thread.

/\ Out of all duplicate threads to complain about, this isn't one of them. And there sure as hell are more threads about KoS than there are about friendly interactions.

Spawned in Berezino earlier today on a hardcore experimental server with roughly 30 people. Ran into 5 survivors total, all friendly. Teamed up with the first two in Berezino and headed north to loot the ship. At one point while in the ship, I slipped and fell to my death (shit) and met another friendly guy as I ran to meet back up with the guys at the ship and grab my stuff. About 10 minutes later I arrived and luckily they decided to wait it out to see if I'd come back. One of the dudes had to log off just as we met another guy who then tagged along as we went further north to Svetlo.

By then I had a Mosin with no rounds and one of the other guys had an SKS with some ammo. Svetlo was completely looted and as we were heading west to leave the city we ran into another guy who instantly surrendered upon the sight of us, lol. He had a shotgun but no ammo and told us that while in the city he overheard of group of well geared bandits saying they were gonna head to NE airfield. He said he was gonna go log off and decided to give us all his shit and the 3rd guy got the shotgun.

We left Svetlo for the new town to the west along the train tracks. Half the place was looted but we got some decent stuff, including another Mosin, and decided to head for the NE airfield to see if we could find and engage the bandits. No luck, everything was already looted including most of Krasnostav and the place was deserted. Crazy considering it was pretty much a full server by then. By the time we finished checking Krasnostav it was pretty dark so we decided to head for the trees and log out.

5/5 friendly in one session.

Yeah most people we have encountered have been hostile but it's encounters with friendlies that make is keep coming back for more

Most of the time the friendlies have been short and sweet encounters with each of us going our own ways without them coming flack to shoot us

Here's a few of mine I got on record

It seems in all of the situations you described you were not geared at all. However, once you get gear, especially a gun, most people will take you out at the chance.

I don't really trust people in this game. The only people I trust are the ones I'm talking to on teamspeak. Last night I've decided to change that. I was in Berenzino walking around, checking the rooftop of one of the apartment for a PU scope for my SKS. A guy started talking to me from the stairs below, if it was okay for him to come up and he meant to harm. He just was running for some guys and wanted to hide.

Normally I would have told him to look elsewhere but okay, I wanted to give it a shot (hehe)... He climbed up and started talking about his friend who was taken by some bandits and being tortured on the coast. At this point my other friend climbed up on the roof as well and we had a chat.

He asked if we had any ammo for his SKS. I did, but I said that I didn't. I did not trust him that much. He said it was no problem, and if it was okay if he took the backpack that was on top of the roof. No problem buddy, go ahead. So we make our way down and go towards the hospital in Berenzino. I went to the waterpump and all of the sudden we get shot at from a house. My buddy is dead at this point and I leg it towards another house.

I look through the window and see one guy trying to find me. I shoot him in the head and immediately get shot at from another direction. First an M4, then a Mosin and SKS. I try to figure out where they are.. I see two guys running down the hill......Wait.. is that.... Goddamnit.. It's the little shorts wearing son of a bitch with our red backpack from before. They come closer and I can hear them laugh and him explaining how he trapped us. I think they thought that they already killed me as I went prone in a building. So I see Mr. Hotpants coming up the stairs with his buddy. As soon as his little head pops up, I show him, then shot his buddy, however I was exposed as their other friend shot me right through the window all the way from the hospital building.

So I've tried. I've tried trusting someone I didn't see before. I got killed as a reward. (nice intense fight though). However, I'm going back to my old play style.

I play as hero, I never KOS.

As said before, asshole/friendly-ratio is about 1/1. I enjoy interacting with players a alot and I believe it´s the only way to get the most out of the game. It´s hard, though.

OMG You don't shoot people and actually communicate!! And this greatly reduces the KoS that you encounter.

The forums need more posts and stories like this so people can understand this, hell on the airfield I DIDN'T shoot someone cos they talked to me.

I've only ever been K'dOS at Elektro on a high pop server or at an airfield, which is completely understandable. I met a group of 3 other friendlies (who weren't friends on Steam or RL) who were geared up on the Aussie Experimental Hardcore server. They gave me an SKS and plenty of ammo and we adventured for a few hours killing the respawning zombies.

Ugh I've played for 50+ hours on SA and killed 3 people all in complete self defense.  think I met 2 friendlies. One guy I ended up running to Berezino with but we got lost since it was nightfall. That kinda of sucked because he was a really nice guy. The other guy I met wandering around later in Berezino in the supermarket and we both said "Hi" and parted ways.

Two of the idiots I killed were fresh spawns that just ran up to me and started punching. One of them while he was running up to me with a zombie chasing him and I offered to help him and and give him a gun but he chased me and started swinging. The other guy attacked me at Balota,

It's hit and miss but I think theres more friendlies on experimental than the regular servers atm. It might because the zed's are on crack on experimental

Met a few friendlies already. Tonight a buddy and I ran into a guy wearing a cowboy hat saying he was the Sheriff of Kamyshovo. We gave him a magnum and we helped him police the town. Took down 5 or 6 bandits before we finally got swarmed. Fun with a complete random.

In my experience its about 40 / 60 for friendly / hostile. Shave 10% off the hostile number if youw ant to consider the weirdo's that act odd while chasing me around, persuading me to kill them >.>

I went to NWAF with a clan with 8 people + and wasn't shot when I got gear.

I went to NEAF with 2 guys and wasn't shot when I got an SKS.

This thread inspired me to be even less trigger happy. When I jump online tonight I will not only be friendly to bambis but will attempt to start more dialogues with armed players. I think I've played this game long enough to not worry about my gear too much.

I've never met a friendly unfortunately. I think it would be cool to work as a team but no such luck.

It's a mixed bag.. It depends a lot upon where you are at and how you are dressed. I have a feeling most of the people complaining about being KOS'd are server hoppers and/or people who run around high pop areas in full military gear. I know from my perspective, I am much more likely to snipe a guy if he has a Hunting Backpack and an M4 in Elektro than I am to shoot a guy toting a Mosin or an SKS, wearing a Taloon. One guy looks like he's looking to kill people and he came to elektro for that specific purpose.. The other guy looks like he just spawned near Elektro and was lucky enough to find a weapon.

Just as an example of my recent adventure on a character which is over a month old..

I was travelling from NEAF to Elektro to meet up with some friends..

My first encounter was spotting 2 guys on the roof of the industrial building in Solnichny Factory.. One of them was laying prone on the roof with an M4, looking out toward the coast. I didn't hesitate for a second to shoot this guy. He had a friend who was behind the wall when I shot the first guy.. Took a couple of shots at him and missed, and I believe he went inside and logged out. Second encounter was right after I shot this guy, a fresh spawn with a courier backpack and a construction hat ran up behind me.. I turned and told him to back off a bit. He complied. I explained to him that I just killed a spawn camper and where he could find the loot. He was nice and thankful and promptly ran down and looted the guy.

Third encounter was in Three Valleys.. As I was running along I heard movement behind me, and turned my head to see a free spawn chasing me.. He kept repeating "SO  YOU LIKE SHOOTING FRESH SPAWNS EH?!".. I told him to calm down and that I wasn't shooting fresh spawns.. Told him about the spawn camper I just killed in Solnichny. He asked if his body was still there, I said maybe, but that it had already been looted.. I asked him if he wanted any Rice, he said yes.. I dropped a bag of rice while I was running.. He stopped, I stopped. He said he believed me, he took the rice and I told him about another group of 2 geared guys who I saw coming down the coast.. Told him to watch out for them and to stick to the tree line. He thanked me and we both moved on.

Then I went on towards Elektro, and came across a watering hole outside of Kamyshovo (just east of Kamy in the treeline).. 2 players were coming up the hill at me, I had my mosin out.. I panicked and pulled out my Revolver, and moved behind a tree.. The other guy moved behind a tree as well.. I told him I was friendly, and was just traveling to meet friends. He said he was friendly too and he was escorting his fresh spawn friend to meet up with some other friends in Berezino.. I told him I was lowering my weapon, and he said he lowered his.. we both moved out into the open and waved. Talked for a minute, then went about our business.

Not much happens in Elektro, and I log in the next day, snipe a fully geared guy sitting on Memorial hill (The small hill just south of the Fire Station). I spot 2 medium geared guys go into the house across the street from the Western firestation, and my 2 friends go to engage them.. They were camping on the top floor, and opened fire on my friends as they approached. 1 of my friends shot and killed the first guy through the window, and both of them breached the building and pinned down the 2nd guy. They gave him a chance to surrender, and he refused, opening fire on them and injuring 1. They took him down.

Later in the same session, we spotted 2 fresh spawns with guns near the pub, and we engaged them, talked to them, and sent them on their way.. ended up they were in the community TS.

So, as you can see.. Mixed bag. Some friendly, some not..How we handled the situations was completely dependent upon how the other players acted and in some cases, looked.. I feel no sympathy shooting a fully geared player who's camping in a well known sniper spot, where as we will usually try to engage less geared people in conversation.

Anywhere that you point a gun in someones face before they put one in yours. People are awfully friendly when they're looking down a barrel.
