If I were to buy the Day Z Standalone Alpha Version off steam, would I only be buying the Alpha version or will I be able to access the Beta version and eventually the finished game with this purchase?

My advice - don't buy it. It's not in a state that is anywhere near fun to play. It may appear so at first, but once you've looted the LIMITED amount of loot there is, it becomes very boring with nothing to do. 

 

And respawning - collecting loot you soon realise the pointlessness in it.

You need to expand your horizons... do what my buddy does now.  He spawns, strips down to his undies, puts on a clown mask and runs around scaring people.  He goes on voice comms and gives a death scream and runs at them with his hands up and leaning side to side...  you would not believe how many people he has scared so bad they turn and run for the hills.  I have told him to get some video so we can post it up online for all to enjoy, I hope on his next outing he does as much.  It's funny as hell to watch!  I am contemplating on my next respawn doing the same thing for a good laugh

Well if you do buy it here's come tip's,

 

People will shoot you on sight, stay unseen

Low pop servers contain more loot, but the people who loot them are paranoid and will shoot you without hesitation or conversation

High pop servers have less loot but some people will talk to you, before they cuff you and steal you pant's.

The coast is death.

If you get lost just run in a single direction until you hit road's, train tracks or power lines then follow them.

Any Military instillation is a KoS zone.

I say buy the alpha version because who knows they might raise the price once it hits full release they did this with ArmA 3. You buying DayZ though depends on if you understand and already know what DayZ is and is not. If you are a fresh spawn to the DayZ world don't buy it. Read the forums and guides watch some videos on youtube to make sure you want to play this game in its current state or even at all.

I could name one Ive payed for...never again. Still it did help the said company get some great games out, but i did feel rather "used". I should have read the offer more closely.

Carry a smaller backpack so you are always at a lack for stuff. Limiting yourself makes you feel the importance of every can of beans.

The problem being, on a 40max player server with the size of the maps, encounters are few and far between. This keeps the casuals happy though so they don't post 100 threads on KOS and they can sit in the woods pretending they are surviving when in fact there are no zombies or people near them in 2k squared kilometers.
