The morphine/broken leg situation sucks

Recommended Posts

So yesterday at staroye i got hit by a zombie with 12k blood and he broke my leg. I didn't have morphine since that's now only medical loot. I spent several hours crawling to the tents at stary sobor, only to get killed by some cunt when i finally reached a medical tent. I'm all for the game being realistic and being difficult, but this is silly for a few reasons:

1. Morphine doesn't fix broken legs. A cool mechanic for fixing a broken leg would be like combining wood and bandages to make a splint or something. When morphine was relatively easy to find plus people started out with a few of them, it wasn't a big deal. Now it's almost impossible to find anywhere but medical loot spots, of which there are few.

2. Getting swatted by a zombie shouldn't break my leg so easily. It's actually pretty hard to break someone's leg.

3. Since there are few medical loot spots, they're pretty much always under the control of bandits. I don't have a problem with bandits controlling the places to get the best weapons like the barracks and military tents, but we NEED morphine because of how easy it is to have a leg broken. I was on my 7th day, and this was like my 4th or so broken leg (I did have morphine earlier from a hospital but had run out days ago.) I was on a nighttime server with like 8 people on it when I finally found the medical tent and crawled in, and STILL there was some dickhead there.

Possible solutions:

1. Make it a lot harder to have your leg broken. Maybe add a sprained ankle mechanic that restricts you to walking speed for a few hours if you don't get morphine or something. Reserve broken legs for things like falling out of a deer stand.

2. Make morphine easier to get. Adding it to farm loot would work, and be realistic. Morphine (and other even stronger opiods) are used in veterinary medicine.

3. Make the cure for a broken leg something else, like the wood/bandage combine into a splint. Combining things and constructing things is a cool mechanic in the game, and I'd like there to be more of them. I really like the steps needed to make cooked meat, for example.

4. Make the morphine autoinjector a reusable tool. Not 100% realistic, but not too bad if it's renamed a morphine kit. It would still be tough to get, but you'd only have to brave the bandits for it once.

I have to agree with you. If i break my leg, i usually just give my stuff to my friend, kill myself and then run back with a brand new leg, just because morphine is nonexistent.

It's not that hard to find Morphine.

Found 5 in 2 days of game. 2 in a dead guy in NWAF, 1 in NWAF Barracks, 1 in Stary, 1 in a Deer Stand.

I totally agree with you just as me and my friends got started i broke my leg because a zombie took a beat on me. :@ WTF

Ok, so my friend went in to a town and searched for morphine but they found nothing...we tried getting me to full blood but that disn't help, we triend bandadge and painkillers...no success...and we are just too far north to walk up again so i can't respawn and my friend can't take all my stuff...this sucks, what did rocket think when he said...well morphine fixes broken bones...can't they just add a timer utill it heals, 10 min or something? this is totall bullshiet and i am about to stop playing because all of the 7 times i got something good...this is how it ended.

I had to crawl for like 40 mins today to then be executed by bandits when trying to find morphine. Maybe they could just reduce movement speed instead.

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. Dead guys aren't a reliable source, especially since corpses fall into the ground and walls more often than not unless they die in the open. NWAF/Stary/city hospitals are good sources (not so much NWAF because the chances are low, but still), but they're very dangerous spots that someone playing with long-term survival in mind will try to avoid. You got very lucky at the deer stand. Deer stands have 2 loot spawn spots with a 50% chance of having loot. They have a 1.9% chance of having medical loot, and if they do there's a 21.7% chance of there being a morphine injector. They also have a 47% chance of having military loot, which has a 1% chance of having a morphine injector. By my calculations, that means that, on average, you'll find 1 morphine for every 115 deer stands you search.

Nothing else at hospitals/military spawns is REQUIRED to play. Blood bags are handy, but you can replenish blood with food. Military weapons are good, but you can survive indefinitely without them. NVGs and GPSes are awesome, but you don't need them, and many people, me included, have never found them.

I agree that there should be an alternative to morphine and the splint idea is a good one. One of the first things that I do when I respawn is head to one of the cities and get morphine. If I'm playing solo, I take 5. For me, it has become on par with getting a weapon and some food and water.

I must be really lucky then.

Not only find all those morphine injections but also 2 GPS ;p

Idea: Zombies Don't Break legs. They Bruise. Bruises go away :)

Being Shot in the leg however... Morphine please.

Having a Bruise could also be "Healed" (<-- Note the Air Quotes) With Painkillers.

I'm for the zombie leg break, a bit silly but they should have something like it which is a crit strike that makes them a real threat. Props to flevius for coming up with the bandage wood combo rather than simply asking for it to be removed like that thread on bleeding. Its a really good idea but it needs something more; if you think about the cooked meat there is quite a bit you need to make it thus beans aren't just a waste of inventory space. Also agree that it should spawn in barns.

so basically when you spawn, you just hit up electro or cherno, go hit up the tents / hostpital, stock up on blood morphine. If you get killed, dm, spawn again. YOu lose fuck all.

Once you have that, a gun, go north.

sorted.

You people and your rubbish survival skills

I agree to the splint idea.

At the moment, the chances of "breaking your leg" are far too high. They should be lowered, not significantly, but just so that you're really unlucky to get a broken leg, but it's still possible (Stopping people from jumping off things).

You ran into one of those super strong ninja zombies that takes one swipe and busts your bones. Either that or you have brittle bone disease.

My friends and I joke about this often. Our tents got wiped and we had no morphine and 2 friends got broken bones from a zombie jumping out and hitting them once and breaking something. It sucks but if you can make a run to a hospital there's about 25 morphine in the medical supply boxes laying around.

sneak in, stock up, get out, stash it in your tent and hope it doesn't get wiped. :D

I do agree it's a bit ridiculous how easily your bone breaks but I don't find it that annoying. It just presents another challenge.

Some people misunderstand the morphine / leg thing.

http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=20657

I see where you're coming from with the broken leg simulating a number of injuries/conditions that could befall the player' date=' but having the penalty for the condition be having to crawl everywhere isn't realistic. A better mechanic that would build the tension and desperation gradually would be to have the player's max blood decline gradually, say by 20 per minute. You'd have 10 hours to live, but the last 5 or so would be with shaking/blurred vision/fainting etc, plus you'd be more vulnerable to attack and whatnot. As it stands, I can survive forever with a broken leg, provided I'm willing to crawl everywhere. Broken legs could still be a thing, just a more unlikely occurrance.

so basically when you spawn, you just hit up electro or cherno, go hit up the tents / hostpital, stock up on blood morphine. If you get killed, dm, spawn again. YOu lose fuck all.

In my case, I did get some morphine before heading north, but I'd been surviving for 7 days. I actually had 3 left on the day this all went down, but used 2 on a friend and one on myself before this legbreak. In any case, it shouldn't be REQUIRED for people to go to a dangerous place (hospitals etc) before heading inland. While it's true that you don't lose anything by taking the risk before you gear up, you do lose your life, and this is a survival simulation. I didn't have anything that great when I crawled for hours trying to get some morphine; I did it cause I wanted to survive for one more day in the apocalypse. I even killed an animal with my hatchet and detoured for like 20 minutes to get to a water pump on the way to keep myself fed/watered for the ridiculously long crawl.

The broken leg mechanic in this game is ridiculous. My friend got hit by a zombie a couple of times and down he went. I escorted him from town to town, but no luck in finding morphine anywhere.

We are new to the game, and are not familiar with the map.

If it's going to be this easy to break your leg, then don't make morphine as unbelievably rare as it is. I have yet to find even one single dose.

I'm camping it out here, waiting for a passing player who had the presence of mind to pack his bag with morphine.... And take it from their freshly made corpse - few players would do a kind deed on merit alone, and are more likely to take advantage of such misfortune. It doesn't pay to be naive in Day Z....at ALL.

Didn't read the OP past the first sentence, skimmed a couple replies, got the gist of the thread.

Morphine isn't hard to find... at all. Raid a hospital or medical tents, problem solved. As for the leg breaking nonsense, yeah, it's a little much at the moment but it's supposedly being reduced in the 1.7.2 update.

I like it. Yes it sucks that you don't start with any morphine. That is why my first stop with a new character is to a hospital for as much morphine as I can find.

Also, loot deer huts they are quick easy and have a chance a great loot drops.

I once crawled to a deer hut with a broken leg. It took me 20+ mins and when I go there sure enough was a morphine injector. Yes I know I was one lucky SOB but still you can find morphine in deer huts too.

I agree 100%.

Theres not a single good reason to keep the broken leg/morphine in the game. I do try the 1 hour crawl thing to try to find morphine , a few times actually, thing is it wears pretty thin after the 45th time. IMO if a game puts the player in a situation where he/she is forced to hit the "quit" button, even after being alive for 4-5 hours, then I think it might be time to re-evaluate that specific situation.

I think more importantly is the fact that many players, myself included, log out of the game when their legs break, and wait until a friend finds morphine then logging back in. Needless to say, having your legs broken and having to crawl miles to the nearest hospital is NOT where this game shines, it's one of the most boring parts of it. I haven't played the game in 2 days because I have a whole ton of loot, some of it belongs to friends, some of it is just awesome and I don't want to lose it. I've sent some low-threat friends into Cherno/Elektro but they'll either be killed or all the morphine will already be gone. Then they log out from the frustration. It's kinda limiting the amount of players who could be online and playing and enjoying their experience.

+1 on the splint idea, wouldn't even be hard to implement I'm sure.
