PhillyT 554 Posted February 22, 2014 Can be, but if you are only shooting a couple shots it isn't unmanageable. I dump 12 rounds out of a pistol grip folding stock Saiga without top much trouble. Being able to wrap your fingers over the top of the double barrel helps with control immensely.
TheWanderingMan 170 Posted February 22, 2014 Yeah I can imagine having no stock makes it kick a bit.
PhillyT 554 Posted February 22, 2014 It pushes into your hand a bit, but you are genera;;y firing from the waist, which lets you settle your weight in. The biggest issue is that there is so little weight to the gun to soak up the recoil. My saga is a hog, like at least 10 pounds. It gobbles up a lot of recoil, even when firing rapidly. The recoil was still enough to break a red dot sight, requiring that I purchase a high end iron sight instead.

Demoth 366 Posted February 23, 2014 Quick couple of questions. 1. Are speedloaders still messed up for the shotgun? I heard they dropped the bullet velocity by around 75% when released. Was this addressed? 2. How the F--K are you guys getting kills with this thing? I had 3 different people last week shoot me point back with sawed offs. It ruined all my gear, but each of them I either SKS'd or FNX'd to death while they tried to reload. When I took one guys as a last resort weapon, I buried 2 SKS rounds into a guy before realizing I was dry (I forgot to reload, whoops!) I switched to shotgun, and the guy was bleeding everywhere from the 2 SKS shots. I hit him with the shotgun, both barrels and hew as bleeding EVERYWHERE.... but he still didn't die. I had to switch to my MAgnum and put another round into him to drop him.
PhillyT 554 Posted February 23, 2014 I have never noticed a difference with speedloaders so I can't really say. I have had an odd glitch were a pair of shells won't combine with another stack, instead giving me the option to load them into the stack. I generally have to drop the rounds. As far as kills, not sure. I did have a case last night where I shot a crouching man with a single round and broke his leg, but didn't kill him. I am sure if I had dropped the second round, he would have died (I was only 10 feet away from him). If a pellet hits the head, it will pretty much end them. In either case, shot guns are a fire and run weapon. You dump both rounds, then get to cover to reload and pop out to shoot again. You NEVER shoot and reload anywhere near the person you are shooting. There certainly does seem to be quite a lot of variation in the damage rate. I would say use it for a bit and see how it feels. Yeah, I try not to fire the shotgun or the Blaser and stay visible while I change out rounds. The speedloader issue may have been fixed, dunno. Glad to hear you're having more luck with the gun than I am :( I feel that a lot of games screw up shotguns one way or another. They either do way too much damage, or not enough. There never seems to be a sweet spot. I understand that if you're wearing a fair bit of gear, buckshot may not have the penetration to go through you and kill you, but I honestly feel that if you're under 5 meters and you pelt someone, they should either get rendered unconscious or be knocked to the ground. I have a Remington 870 Marine Magnum, as well as a Bounty Hunter II coach double barrel shotgun, and those things spray pellets a good distance that blast through hard wood pretty effectively. PhillyT 554 Posted February 23, 2014 Yeah, I own a Saiga 12, Remington 870 Special, and an old Winchester Model 12. In all cases, anything hit with buckshot within 10 yards is fucking DEAD. I don't hunt, but we shoot a lot of rounds here in Maine in the summer (about 5,000 on the range we have built on my property per year). The amount of damage shot guns do to various items and material is amazing.
DarkwaveDomina 1099 Posted February 23, 2014 The last time I used a shotgun in DayZ I broke someone's legs with it from about 50 or 60 feet.I wasn't even expecting to hit the guy, very impressed, A++ would shoot again.

Demoth 366 Posted February 23, 2014 YES speedloaders work now. Was there a specific patch note about this? I'm lazy.... but no one has to link it. Just a yes or no and I'll got wade through them to find it.
Nicko2580 398 Posted February 23, 2014 The first thing I do as a new spawn is go and look for a shotty. In the beginning of the game when you're gearing up, they're awesome protection in towns out to about 50m, which is going to be the general range especially in cities. Once I've picked up my primary of choice though (was the Mosin, but now I am leaning towards the SKS... just wish you could paint it) it gets cut down and stashed in my backpack. My theory is that if I get held up, I can drop my SKS and look unarmed. Then, if the bandit makes even a minor mistake, it only takes me a second to whip it out and blast them. The same thing works with a pistol, but at the range we're talking about here I'd rather have the quick and effective power of the shotgun. Also good for clearing buildings rather than trying to do that with a rifle. Nicko2580 398 Posted February 23, 2014 My theory is:The real bandits are rare.KOS-ters are more common... ;)Yes you're probably right, but the difference there is that KoSers will just shoot on sight, usually regardless of range and most of the time without much skill either (not everyone is an uber lethal murderer who waits in the shadows and pounces like Batman at the perfect moment). In that scenario my trusty SKS is much more of my friend than a shotgun.
Deathlove 2286 Posted February 23, 2014 Im just waiting for the pump action they can hold more rounds than the double barrel for more intense combat situations.
PhillyT 554 Posted February 25, 2014 So I was playing on the ARC hardcore server last night (about the unfriendliest folks you could ever meet) and I met a nice new player at the house next the the Berezino train station. In his red helmet and red tee shirt he was a bit obvious. I gave him rice and said if he wanted to talk he could meet me in the copse of trees west of the station. So I walked into the trees and was looking for a nice pine to eat in when I saw a fully geared M4 player standing on the top of the hill in the middle of the trees. I immediately pulled my sawed pff and approached, only after getting within 5 feet did the weapon reload sound play. I put a single round into his back as he began to move. Guilty feeling? No, he shouldn't have been so blasie in that hateful server! I did ruin his shirt, vest, helmet, glasses, and some backpack gear though. I went and found my new spawn friend, led him to the body, and took the M4 and an ammo can for myself. So shotgun is one hit lethal at 10 feet!
gibonez 3633 Posted February 25, 2014 I don't mind rare spawn top tier LEO/Combat shotguns, but I'd rather seem more hunting shotguns with limited magazine capacity. I'd also love to be able to decide which part of the shotgun to cut down. One benefit of Duck / hunting shotguns is the ability to take 3 1/2 inch magnum duck rounds and they have modified veen chokes or other chokes giving them a tighter pattern and thus more range with buckshot slugs wont work with those guns though. I would prefer a pump action first over a semi auto such as this Remington 870.
gibonez 3633 Posted February 25, 2014 YES speedloaders work now. Wish speed loaders or aka "magazines" were not a thing for shotguns or bolt action rifles. The game badly needs a pocket slot where you can put a reasonable amount of shells or rifle rounds and then you top off from. Having to rely on speed loaders or manually tabing and loading new shells is clunky as hell.

Jex 1104 Posted February 25, 2014 Me and my buddy were in Berezino thr other day. We'd just got done healing a load of people as we run around as combat medics. For our efforts, these people gave us a pair of brand new M4's! We'd never had these before so we thought it was rather cool. Anyway, I ducked inside this little green and red house to feed the puppy dog I rescued earlier when some fucker killed it, taking me out in the process.

Woodland Creature 9 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) I had a sawn off shotgun on an older character and was hoping I'd get a chance to use it on another player, sadly alpha ate that character before I got the chance. I did have a lot of fun clearing out Zeleno, at range the sawn off performed exactly as I expected, which was pretty badly. But letting the zombies get closer and giving them both barrels was such fun. The first time I unloaded both barrels into a zombie, the recoil sent the barrel skywards and I just pissed myself laughing. Obviously this isn't a stealth weapon and sure enough I drew in every hungry zombie within earshot, but that was fine because I had like 5 or 6 speed loaders ready to go and a silly amount of ammo in reserve. A few minutes later and the south part of town was clear and I had a huge smile on my face. Edited February 25, 2014 by Woodland Creature
