Finding a stashed backpack

Recommended Posts

So last night when scouting out an airfield, I found a backpack that looked like it had been stashed by a player. Full of gear, laying in long grass in the trees just inside the airfield wall. Stocked with a ballistic helmet, food, water, can opener, ammo etc.

Is this definitely a pack someone has left there while heading off to loot? Or do packs stay after someone's been shot?

I waited around for a good 20 minutes to see if someone was gonna come back for it (was going to try and have a friendly interaction, seeing as I didn't touch any of their gear but could easily have taken all of it) but no show and I ended up moving along.

Someone stashed a backpack there and was hoping to come back for it later, you just ruined their day.  :D

Backpacks on dead people disappear with the person unless removed.

Backpacks do not spawn with anything in them.

Nah I didn't do anything to the pack. I just checked what was in it and left it there, didn't take anything. I already had better gear of my own anyway.

I just hung out in the bushes for like 20 minutes, waiting and watching, but no one came. I was gonna hold them up at first and just see if I could get a conversation going and then trade them some stuff if they needed it. :p

Very noble of you kind sir.

That is what i would have done in the same situation.

LOL.

Well, I prefer to give people a chance. I did have my gun up because I figured they probably wouldn't react well to someone jumping out of the bushes and going, "Hey there friend!" :p I was going to do the standard, "Put your hands up." routine. As long as their complied they wouldn't have got hurt or robbed.

Yeah and you found it next to the tiny ass bush...Its was a Big Blue Pack and your welcome..

I normally leave a note. Forgot. My bad.

The back story. Got jumped in the prison. I won. Was bleeding like a stuck pig. He shot my bandage in my jacket. I ended up ruining everything he had with my two shotgun blasts. Again still bleeding like a stuck pig and no bandages on the airfield I figured fuck it. I'm leaving it for the next guy. I pitched it in the grass under the skinny tiny bushes figuring a player would find it. Since it was pretty much in the open.

I died about 10mins later in Zerno looking for that ill fated bandage. Never went back cause I'm lazy like that. As stated I normaly carry a note with my name per-written and slight back story on how the gear got where it was..But I was dieing so that went out the window..

Nah sorry dude, but it was a green mountain pack and it was stashed in the trees in long grass (quite well hidden, only saw it because I pretty much tripped over it), at the southern end of the airfield about 50m from the military buildings.

Nice story though. :P At least I know who's pack it is if I ever find a blue one with a note in it now.

i wish player dropped containers would persist through restarts

Think about this:  They've been saying that eventually they will have a loot-respawn system (thinkg Infestation: Survivor Stories) so that servers won't have to be restarted to get loot.  No server restart = you can leave a full backpack lying around as a cache!!!  MIND BLOWN!!!!!!!!!!  That would also add a whole new dimension to the game, aka Cache Poaching lol!

It is a good tactic overall, sometimes might go wrong, and whomever left it badly concealed will learn.

Use the tactic to your advantage, especially if you know the server restart cycles.  Leave it concealed at a safe distance, go in. IF the worst happens at least you might be lucky enough to spawn close by.

Gratz on your finding.

Ha it may belong to Wheunis. He usually stashes his backpack somewhere around the NWAF in a bush or somethin, seeing as he tends to hang out up there a lot

I wonder how they'll handle that.

Loot will have to despawn at some time, or eventually a server would crash with all the non-consumables that would end up being spread all over the place.

I dunno, maybe a 24 hour limit unless they were placed specifically in a persistent storage container?

Your idea is very likely as well...

Thanks for your valuable input lol. I was completely unaware how many people play this game, or the generic probability of potential ownership involved.

Mountain = immediately not mine.

Hunting pack = 20% likelihood its mine.

Improved survivor's pack = 80% likelihood its mine.

Also... I would never stash near the walls.

You would have to be at least 300m from any discernable manmade structure to find mine  :)

But I love that there are indeed some folks around that have taken my advice to heart when it comes to playing more "prepared and careful".

Think about this: Persistent containers (backpacks) have been confirmed by Rocket in Sacriel's YouTube stream and will be coming soon (possibly in the next Experimental build, I forget). Backpack spawns are going to get another reduction, but any backpack dropped by a player will persist through server restarts (which will eventually only be for maintenance reasons once loot/zombie respawning is in anyway).

It's on the cards for me if/when I really start playing this game seriously, but at the moment I can't be arsed running all the way back from the coast if I do happen to get shot.

I'd rather just start again from scratch. Too much exploring of the rest of Chernarus to do. :p
