What to expect from the Ruger 10/22

Recommended Posts

Sounds like you just have a crap gun.  Or you just never clean it.  I have an AR-15 .22 and a bolt action .22.  Both shoot just fine, dead on accurate, and with the AR it fires as fast as you can pull the trigger.  However, I will say that because there's such a small amount of powder in the cartridge, I occasionally get stovepiped on the AR if I shoot it too fast.  But I've never had a problem with accuracy for either of my .22 rifles and only had firing issues with 1 and it's a minor inconvenience.

And yeah .22LR has become pretty rare.  They can be used in handguns and rifles alike so you need to be 21 to buy them (I'm pretty sure federal law) but that's even if you can find them these days.  Luckily I loaded up on a ton of rounds when they used to sell boxes of 500 for like 20$.

True I don't even remember the last time I cleaned it. I got it when I was 11 and I'm 28 now....

But I do own a fairly new (2 years ago) S&W .22LR AR Variant. It is slightly more accurate but defiantly not the .22LR accuracy that I had growing up. Overall manufacturing quality have gone down substantially over the years.

I have the original of this- http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Rimfire-Rifles/Semiautomatic|/pc/104792580/c/105530580/sc/104800680/Colt174-M4-Ops-22-LR-Semiautomatic-Tactical-Rimfire-Rifle/710003.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fsemiautomatic%2F_%2FN-1102344%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104800680%3FWTz_l%3DUnknown%253Bcat104792580%253Bcat105530580&WTz_l=Unknown%3Bcat104792580%3Bcat105530580%3Bcat104800680

I would like to see a 22mag added. The 10/22 will be nice, but a 77/22 would be an excellent addition as a small caliber, anti-player/anti-zombie weapon.

O/T here, but the M77 series would be a nice addition to long range hunting-type rifles (aka sniper rifles.)

Are you sure .22LR wont penetrate a single gatorade bottle at 100yd?

Dont think so buddy. Maybe you're mistaking it for .22 pistols, these are crap, but .22 rifles are quite deadly, and can be supressed very easily (even without threading)

Yeah, you don't even need subsonic rounds it's so fucking quiet! Well not that quiet but very, very close...

They should add the .22Mag Revolvers. I was just in the gun store about 15mins ago and half of the pistols were .22 Mag..

Bought myself a XD-9 3.3!!

Here is a video of a guy talking about .22LR efficiency against zombies and shooting some plywood.

http://youtu.be/Ugw4iYqm7o4

If you don't want to watch I'll tell you that it penetrated 5 sheets of 10mm plywood from (according to his words) 70 meters.

And here is a video of the same guy shooting a variety of .22LR at some pine boards from exactly 50 meters.

http://youtu.be/PbwQ0dMWJ18

This video is in Russian so I'll tell you that not all but some rounds penetrated 4 pine boards.

That is certainly not an airgun.

That guy also happens to be the author of my favorite books about zombie apocalypse, they are bestsellers in Russia.

Also, .22 can come in boxes that contain 500 rounds, which should only take on up space in your inventory.  I hope they do this.

Actually, a 500 round box of .22LR is quite a hefty chunk. I have a few in the closet, and you wouldn't be able to carry one around in your pocket :).

From my expirence with DayZ mod, anything lesser then 7.62 is "bambi calliber".

If it's not 7.62mm bullet gun, then it is bambi gun.

As for how many inches of plywood or how many gatorade bottles a .22LR will go though ...

It's gonna depend on the rifle, barrel length and on the type of ammo.

.22LR comes in many different varieties with different velocities.

"Standard" velocity is ~1050FPS but most ammo you find is a bit hotter at ~1250fps or more.

Faster loads will of course go though a gatorade bottle or plywood at 100 yards, but standard or subsonic loads may not.

Also, the barrel length makes a difference. In general the longer the barrel the faster it goes.

A 10/22 is normally a Carbine with a short(ish) barrel of only 16 - 18 inches.

Also, a bolt action rifle should shoot a bit faster than an autoloader because some energy is lost in cycling the bolt.
There's no breach locking mechanism on the 10/22, it's only the weight of the bolt that keeps the chamber closed until the bullet leaves the barrel.

All this combined means that a 10/22 shooting subsonic ammo is gonna have a hard time penetrating anything at range.

And even if it did, remember, it makes a tiny hole. No rapid drop in blood pressure and you won't bleed to death for hours.

This is not how it works IRL. Human body is not a bag of blood, it is also filled with organs of varied importance, some of those if even nicked are going to be much more of a problem than mere blood loss.

Agreed, but that nick is not going to stop you in your tracks.

Hit me in the liver, the kidneys, the gut, whatever, I'm going to have a bad time, but not rapid unconsciousness.

I'm still going to be awake for hours and capable of beating you to death with your rifle.

Even a hit in the lungs is going to take a few minutes to be disabling.

Only at close range.

At 100 yards it may not penetrate a heavy coat. It's down to ~900FPS which is airgun speed.

At 50 yards it still has 1000FPS and 89 ft. lbs. so it'll probably get through a skull at 50 yards.

Is a .22 lethal, of course it can be, but the size and speed of the bullet makes a very small hole.

It will take a long time to bleed out from a hit to the abdomen or any large muscle group.

A headshot or heart shot would be necessary for a quick takedown.

Otherwise, like I said, they have plenty of time to bandage and then beat you to death with the empty rifle.

An M4 fires a bullet almost the same diameter as the .22 but since the velocity is so much higher it creates a much larger wound cavity and thus more shock and a much faster drop in blood pressure.

Water is a great bullet stopper. If the bottle is full of water it'll drop the velocity significantly.

I often find pellets from my air rifle inside a leaky Gatorade bottle.

22lr is far more lethal than 100 yards.

I expect low knockdown power heavy bleeding from the 22.

As I said in another post. It will depend on the ammo. Mini-Mag is 1250FPS, much faster than "Standard Velocity"

Also, light bleeding, not heavy. Again, it's a tiny hole and it doesn't widen out inside like larger calibers.

Sidenote: Love Eric and Barry, watch them all the time. I wish Barry would come back. Eric alone isn't as good.

Bullet in the liver is probably going to take you down in seconds. Anywhere in the abdomen is going to hurt like hell with every movement, beating anyone would not be the first priority for most people in this situation, maybe you are different, I don't know.

I always thought the lower heavier bullets with lower velocity did more damage on the 22lr they penetrate much deeper.

I couldn't be less interested in the whole gun, when ever I find it I go: eeeeeh... It just seems like the gun you use if you don't have anything else. But hey, that's just my opinion and TBH it's great they're adding a variety of weapons to the game!

Well, it is probably going to be good for shooting zombies and upside being the amount of ammo that we can carry, but anyway who shoots zombies when there is an axe and even if there is no axe, there are not too many zombies so no need for a lot of ammo. So I must agree that there is not much purpose for it, although still better to have it then nothing at all.

Sometimes I don't pick up weapons if I don't have bullets so people don't see me as a threat.

You can run all the videos in the world though Gib, the issue remains that the 9mm is considered too low a caliber for efficient combat, let alone the .22.

The 10/22 is a meaningless fun gun and nothing more.

Do you .22LR fans think that an FN P90 in 5.7 x 28 is more or less lethal than a 10/22?

I know in close quarters combat both the P90 and P90S tear ppl apart in Infestation: Survivor Stories.
