Defibrillators and their uselessness

Recommended Posts

Okay, I KNOW this has been addressed in the past - but the more people out stand the loud ones right?

So I'm playing DayZ. I came across a defib unit, expecting to use it on one of my friends when they die. Of course they did. I get out the defib unit quickly and attempt to use, I fiddle with it for about 5 minutes then I conclude that Its USELESS. I go online and read that it revives people that are unconscious! Last time I checked, defibrillators are used EVERYDAY to revive someone when their heart stops pumping, which is when someone is 'dead', NOT when someone is unconscious or knocked out.

No offense to whoever decided to add a defib to the game that doesn't even do what they are mean't for, but they need to get the facts right.
This may sound OP, but its not really. Defibs should be RARE, and if you got one you don't normally use it on randoms right? It's normally if you are in a group. Plus it is realistic since it is used in everyday situations.

I believe there should be a way to revive players, only in certain sitations. Say if you got shot in the head, nope. Can't get revived. Now if shot in the foot, Well get a teammate to bandage you and saline bag you then revive you (you do blood first because you go unconscious from blood loss). Or perhaps you die from being sick or some other problematic event. Then again, this doesn't have to be a feature to revive - but defibrillators are BUILT to revive.

I am just trying to be real here and make this game the best that it could be. This doesn't work with common knowledge and I just want to get this fixed.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

ya I find it strange that you would wake some one up with some thing that strong.

That being said they might not want the game to be that easy? I dunno its alpha so maybe thats rockets plan but he cant do it yet.

I myself have been corrected in this field, they don't restart or start stopped hearts, they stabilize irregular heartbeats and such.

Also bit of electricity isn't going to cure a 7.62 brain hemorrhage or a lung full of buckshot.

I mean, I agree, who wouldn't.

But I feel that a lot of the things in the game like this are just the very start of new systems to DayZ.

Speedloaders don't act like speedloaders, defib would kill a sleeping person, zombies don't walk through walls or fall through the ground.

If these aren't going to be made to work as they do more realistically at request, I'd be sitting there at release wondering what the devs spent their time doing...

As mentioned above, defibs should never be able to revive someone from the dead. They currently wake up unconcious players once applied.

As of now it might only ever be on a rare occasion that you need to wake someone up, but i can see them becoming more usefull in the future.

When firearms are a rarity and pristine loot is worth pursiuing, people will have to resort to knocking people out with more improvised weaponry.

Defibs will be a nice advantage then, seeing how they are reusable.

To be fair to the OP, they said "when the heart stops pumping" which is correct - the reason ventricular fibrillation (VF) kills people is that it stops the ventricles acting in a coordinated fashion that allows it to pump blood. Defibs can be (and usually are) used for patients in VF.

We already hve people being revived from dead. They're called ZOMBIES! Once you get the 'You are dead' screen, there should be no coming back, ever. Well, for players, at least! Otherwise we might as well get rid of perma-death altogether. No point wasting server resources on something that will never actually be allowed to happen by the player base, right.

To the OP: Yes the defib needs some love applied to it. I'm guessing it will get that at a later stage of the dev cycle.

Defibrillators shouldn't revive people from the dead. In real life, a defib just fixes an irregular heartbeat, it doesn't magically heal you.

However, I also don't think that they should revive unconscious players. You're just shocking them, after all.

AED will only allow give a "shock advised" and allow for a shock if patient is in V-fib, meaning their heart beat is iregular, not flatlined. Hospital grade D-Fib doesn't have the same restrictions and can be dialed up and down in charge possibly being able to restart a flat lined code. Like stated though it will not remove a 12 slug from someone's heart or a 7.62 wound to their skull. If they had both dead and brain dead states they could have one state that could allow for the D-Fib to revive from and the other to not. Both the patient nor the medic would know how dead they were without attempting to revive them or diagnosing to see how extreme the injuries are("this man has a fatal gunshot wound to the head" would be an obvious brain dead).
