DEANS serverpolicy - PURE stupidity

Recommended Posts

So you'll ban people for trolling or questioning you and yet you're encouraging and joking about real life violence?  You clearly do not need to be a mod, sorry.

Hello there

as we have discussed before, if you disapprove of my actions, or indeed any mods, please use the report button or contact a Green Mod.

The OP threatened violence and then Dallas made an off colour jibe back at the chap. I didnt approve and gently nudged Dallas in the right direction.

I think Ive been more than fair.

Regardless, this thread is not about me, so lets get back on topic shall we?

Rgds

PS I see i need to clarify my "raising things higher". That refers to morality and is a common term, not to gambling, although I can see your misunderstanding.

Sorry but handing out the server files to a handful of service providers so they can create a monopoly on the price of renting such a server, is complete bullshit.  I've said it before and I'll gladly say it again, if Bohemia wants to have this much control over servers and their administrators, Bohemia needs to be the ones hosting and PAYING for all servers.  You don't throw out a game for the masses to purchase, and then tell them the masses THEY are responsible for footing the bill.  That's just wrong.

You're so wise... You're like a miniature Buddha.

You're complete lack of knowledge in your signature is amazing.  But in general, you are amazing.

You don't seem to understand what the word responsibility means. People have the opportunity to host servers; it's entirely optional. If people weren't willing to do it, Bohemia would. But, people are willing, so Bohemia takes advantage of their generosity. That's not "wrong," it's smart business. The money they save on server hosting costs can be invested in furthering the development of the title.

To OP, you buy or rent a server; the software is the property of Bohemia Interactive. It's a really obvious distinction.

Just because you pay for a hotel room doesn't mean you can take a giant shit in the middle of the bedspread.

Just because you pay to rent an apartment doesn't mean you can tear down walls and make modifications to the structure.

Just because you pay for a taxi doesn't mean you can tear up the seats and assault the driver.

In short, paying for something doesn't make the rules go away. I'm sorry if that's a hard concept to wrap your head around but please do try because we're all sick and fucking tired of having this conversation every two or three days.

I suggest a "Just because you pay for" thread.

Doesn't it make you feel superior though?

Come on the forums, read all this retarded tripe and just think,  what reality do these people live in...

..It's about as ridiculous as people bitching about dev/staff 's amount of time-off... Because they made a one-time payment of $30!  That's the price of a meal in a decent restaurant...

....or it would be, if server rental was a requirement.  It's not, its optional.

Oh, thanks for the info. I just looked it up out of curiosity and saw where he served. Holy shit, even as commisioned officer.

But now I at least know why there's a New Zealand Beret in the game :D

E: I doubt anyone threatening him would be able to compare to that. And if they had a similar background, they wouldn't threaten. Simple.

Apparently they don't since many people are just fine with renting a server, Paying for it, and allowing all of us to connect to it. If you or others don't want to pay for a server... then don't? I understand it is a really simple concept and therefore likely overlooked as a solution.

Hi.

Wow OP, just a tad o'er the top, no? :D

I do however find the typical 'PRIVILEDGE of renting them' responses rather amusing though.

I may have been a little reactionary to the OP in calling it a priviledge, but TBH, BI didn't have to allow any sort of rental of servers at all. The fact they did probably has more to do with concessions to the hosting companies rather than BI themselves. And testing server<->client infrastructure, etc.

I'd also have to assume that they didn't expect the numbers of private PUBLIC servers to take off as much as it did. But the reaction of a minority of those who did decide to rent a server, shows that the rules very definantly needed to be in place first.

Of course paying for something doesn't make the rules go away, but when I pay for any of those things I receive some obvious benefit. What benefit do I receive when I rent a DayZ server?

You should go back to your own rage thread about the combat log timer instead you just miss once again a major point: The rules to rent a server are known ( and I guess need to be accepted ) before you rent a server, if you dont like them just dont rent one. There are enough servers out there anyway and all you xxxxgobblers that keep on whining would use them only to have your own little abusive dictator driven wet dream private farm and not to help make the game better anyway. It was stated already that you will have that dream fullfilled when the game gets released... till then hush hush little nerds.

Well, hopefully you are going to rent/host a server near where you hook into the internet which means you will know there is at least one server out there you can connect to with a low ping. Not much but it is worth something. I've considered renting for that myself. You can also have it be Hardcore or Normal so you know one that fits what you want is nearby. I am certain later there will be other options but right now they want everything to remain more or less standard so that it is easier to track bugs.

Jesus christ.  You don't own shit.  The server is not yours.  You are renting it and have to and will abide by the renters rules.  Just like when you rent a car.  It doesn't give you the right to go and repaint it, change the stereo and turn it into a gangsta mobile.

why?

if you buy a server, the only job you have is PAY for it!

how does it make sense? i would like to meet him, and show him in a fistfight what i think about it!

Dean would kick your ass.

Just had to say it.

The benefit is that you're helping Bohemia save money so they can dump more into development. You're also allowing the community another server to play on.

What people seem to refuse to understand is that the servers are set up in a uniform fashion to allow consist results on whatever data they're gathering.

This game is far from finished and people need to stop playing it like it's a polished product that is just here for pure entertainment; apparently everyone ignored the big warnings of "DON'T BUY THIS IF YOU JUST WANT A FUN GAME EXPERIENCE".

At any rate, I don't play on servers where admins clearly want total control. They are almost always power tripping nerds who thrive on threats, intimidation and starting game-drama. Rarely do they ever want total control to reign in griefing, cheating or disruptive behavior.

The joy of contributing to the development of the best zombie-themed survival game in the history of mankind. Believe it or not, some people do things even when they don't receive something in return. It's called volunteering.

I've been trying to figure out what Bohemia's long-term business plan is for this game. Relying on the charity of other people renting servers for them doesn't seem like a very good strategy. Bohemia is marketing DayZ as a persistent MMO, why aren't they taking steps to fund the ongoing infrastructure expenses that such a game requires, e.g. by charging a monthly fee?

I'm all for a locked-down hardcore vanilla DayZ, whatever that ends up being, but how will relying on a very small percentage of the playerbase's charity to subsidize the cost of the game for the rest of us freeloaders lead to anything other than what happened in the mod? There will be increasing demands for more control by server admins until eventually they are given that control and then how long will it be until 95% of servers are 500+ vehicles, 24 hour daylight, spawn with an M4...

Are there any other examples of successful persistent MMOs that rely on volunteer admins to run servers while giving those admins very little control of how the game is played on their server?
