DAYZ Standalone VS. ARMA 2 MOD version

Recommended Posts

I have around 260 hours on standalone.  I have been playing Epoch for the first time (no previous mod experience) and am absolutely loving it.

Plenty of gun options, missions, persistent storage, and vehicles make it a far more enjoyable and engrossing game.

It does feel easier, but it is much more fun right now.

difficulty changes with the server, the vanilla epoch is even more difficult and frustrating than regular dayz.

I never played regular Dayz MOD.

By easier I meant you can communicate with anyone and ask for a pick up if needed, you can actually drive from one end of the map to the other in 10 minutes rather than a 45 minute journey, and you only need to eat one food item to satisfy your food and drink requirements.

Are the spec requirements the same in both games? I have only downloaded the SA and it is extremely laggy. Just wondering if my Intel HD 4400 gpu would have an easier time handling the mod?

Mod= more content, but more glitchy

SA is *far* more glitchy than the mod currently.  Hardly any zombies present, zombies go through walls, sometimes ladders = insta-death, glitchy noises going off all around you, have to spam the jump keys and 1,2,3,4 keys to switch inventory items, FPS is low, desync is insane, the list goes on.  The mod is actually very stable and playable compared to SA.  Compare the mod to something like CS:GO and hell yeah, it's a glitchy MF'er!

Mod has been out what 2 years and their zombies are still the same...Glitchy, horrible, worse than Standalone zombie...Standalone has been out 6 months and we've seen multiple tweaks on Zombies with pathfinding soon to come...

Average mod zombie: Sprints faster than the character

Hits you from 3.2 metres away

Hits you randomly without doing hit animation

Can't hit while moving

Can't run inside

Moves and looks like soldier (dodges bullets/cars)

Standalone Zombie: Sprint speed currently balanced nicely

Can run inside

can hit while moving

can only hit from a logical distance (1metre or something)

Does a nice animation

Graphics way better

Looks like a zombie

Mod zombies jink and strafe and are a pain in the neck because they were based on soldier AI from Arma. They'd navigate buildings ok though because the map was Arma Cherno and the AI knew the map. But they couldn't run indoors and would get confused by you hiding in a bush.

Standalone zombies run more like zombies, and will come directly at you, but the buildings have been completely remodelled so the zombies don't pathfind the walls they just run straight through them - probably don't even know they're there. Don't see it happening in old mod buildings like the office buildings (some call it a school), zombies path ok in the old buildings to my knowledge. This kinda confirms what I'm on about.

For me mod zombies win (just) simply because there are lots more of them and that makes the zombie aspect better when comparing. But sooner or later the standalone will overtake and have a lot more, and not just zombies spawning where players are but wandering hoardes and overrun buildings and other scary things I hope.

As for the original post I can't say either way! Get the lot I'd say, because Arma II combined ops is worth it by itself. DayZ mod is a free extra. If you like that and DayZ mod you will like DayZ standalone and appreciate the work done on standalone so far that separates it from the vanilla mod.

Mod also - simply cos flying around in a Huey at night wearing your nightvision, landing on Berezino hospital roof for meds - shooting people with a DMR and putting satchel charges in the supermarket and blowing the whole yard sky high all equals much lulz.

Am I talking too much?

Have you played the mod anytime in the last 6 months?  They rarely go through walls, know how to use doorways and stairs, and zig zag much less than they used to.  How on earth can you say they are worse than SA zombies that still walk around half sunk into the ground, can hardly use stairs, and desync all over the place?  Nav mesh is the only significant improvement we've seen.  They're still far worse than mod zombies.

I'm glad they run faster than players.  They're ACTUALLY a challenge now.  The synchronization of hits and animations was fixed a long time ago, but is currently off a bit in 1.8.1 and will be resolved if BI ever gets around to approving mod patch releases.  The attack distance has been addressed in this forum MANY times and is constantly being tweaked.  It's already been reduced for 1.8.1, but again, BI won't approve the patch release.  The rest of the above is due to A2 limitations.  I like that they can't run inside, makes for a great "night of the living dead" feel.  As for "moves like soldiers" they've drastically reduced how much they zig zag from earlier builds.

I think they look terrible despite the redesign.  The animations are awful.  The leap attack is a joke.  The bottom line is, despite all the "improvements" you've listed, zombies are a non-factor in SA currently.  There's hardly any on the map, and the ones you run into glitch all over the place, desync, go through walls, and sink into the ground.  They aren't a threat.  At least they're a threat in the mod.  They are a significant factor in the game.

Your original statement is that the mod is more "glitchy".  The mod suffers much less from things like client performance, desync, lack of syncronization of time-of-day between players, loot issues, PvP lag, poorly implemented melee, etc etc.  SA is early in development.  The mod has ironed out many of the issues that plagued it early on, and for the most part PvP and player sync are incredibly smooth compared to SA.

Both have their advantages. The SA has a nice inventory system in comparison and the mod has way more content (for now). The biggest advantage the mod has imo is its built for love, no money involved. The money is what's turning this lovely expansion into a heated debate imo.

I gotta admit I have a hard time getting in to SA, the guns & their sounds, the cartoony look, the running like a proud paperboy that just got tipped and really want his can bar... it's changed a lot to put it nicely.

Overall. They're both buggy, clunky, and missing that fine polishing we see in most new games. Apart from the buggy part ...that's why I play these games.

I agree about the SA zombies being bad, this is why the mod still wins for me. Until zombies are finished/fixed in the SA, the ones in the mod will always provide a more interesting experience.

This is my 1st post here. I recently downloaded the ARMA 2 OA demo because of all the stuff I have read and heard about DayZ.  I enjoy Arma but after watching all the youtube videos of people playing DayZ, this looks amazing and would be a lot of fun to play.

If I were to purchase Arma 2 Combined Operations from Steam, it says I can download DayZ mod for free. The combined price for Arma2, OA & Dayz Mod is 24.99.  If I just purchase DayZ standalone, it says it costs 29.99.  My question is this:

Isn't the DayZ mod and Standalone the same game, essentially? I can save 5 dollars, and get all 3 games for 25 bucks.  If not, what are the differences between the official DayZ mod and the standalone product?  Are they not going to support the official DayZ mod anymore, if I were only to get the ARMA2 package?  I'm confused on this.

Essentially, I would like to have both games, Arma2 & DayZ but I don't want to buy the Arma package with the free mod and then have to "re-buy" DayZ standalone, at a full price, later on.

Will the Mod keep getting updated like the Standalone?  Sorry for the long post.  Hopefully someone understands what I am asking and can give some insight. I don't want to make a purchase on either games until I am more informed.  Thank you in advance.

I know this post is a bit old, but I would say for sure go to the Mod. Its a FACT that there is way more to do in the mod than standalone.

You have no cIue what youre taIking about... Better shut up and dont taIk shit Iike this...

Yet it's worse in most ways...

- Melee is worse, people claim it is better, but it fucking sucks, they've just made it feel unresponsive and hard to hit anything

- The controls are the same.. I don't get why people claim they're different, they have that quick jump thing now, however it's hit or miss if it does the quick one or the slow one.

- The health system sucks, the mod is way better

- I'm indifferent to the inventory, to me they've just replaced one poor system with another

- Whitelisted servers sorted hackers, besides I rarely saw them in the mod any ways.

- Better guns? No... there is only like 3 and tbh they feel better in the mod.

The new server system is worse, there is never any loot around, the zombies are worse... in fact where are the zombies? There are no vehicles, far fewer items and performance is worse in SA than the mod, especially using Haswell's iGPU which most laptops use now. Weird how the Mod I get 20-30fps and the SA I get 8fps on it, I since bought 670 to tide me over as I didn't want to spend loads with Maxwell around the corner, I get such poor FPS on the SA. All this server bullshit they've done has been a waste, no one cares, the mod worked just fine, all it has done is made the game worse.

I don't get why there hasn't been any major patches since release, what is taking them so long? All the content is there, just put it back in! We need vehicles, just put flick the switch and put them there, I don't want them to be overhauled, so far all that has done is made things worse.

People say oh it's an alpha, well they already had a base game to build upon, SO WTF WENT WRONG?

I bet Dean is just laughing his way to the bank.

i have been playing a couple of days ( standalone) and i know already that some at least of what u say is not true, guns for instance there is alot more than 3, the jumping. if your hands are up you will do a slow jump if they are down you will do a quick one.

Standalone isn't finished. It's an Alpha bug test / server stress test. The "game" hasn't been released yet.

The game warns you multiple times not to buy it if you just want to play and have fun, as they know it's a bug / glitch nightmare with lots of placeholder content.... yet people still buy it then whine like children that it's not a fully optimized finished product.

I wish people like that would heed the "DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN".
