It'd be ludicrous to think there WONT be a functioning train

Recommended Posts

From a design perspective, it'd be absolutely pointless to tie up Ivan with the task of closing the loop of the train tracks to nowhere of Chernarus past if there was no larger plan in mind.

Imagine if GTA V had a circular train loop and no functional train. Doesn't make much sense, does it?

I do think it is a very late development feature that might even be added in beta, and will not be mentioned for a good long time. But choo choo! It's on the way for sure IMO.

Thoughts?

Theres train cargo holds just past cherno, and in IRL a lot of train tracks don't even have trains that run on them anymore

would be cool... but I dunno... maybe they just thought it would add a navigational aspect to the map for people who are lost... come across the railroad and follow it your bound to end up getting somewhere. but eventually a working train would be pretty awesome.. I can just see the epic battles taking place as bandits chase the train down in pick-up trucks trying to kill everyone on it and the train riders shooting out the train cars to defend the train :) would make for some awesome madmax style moments

Who would be operating the train? If it ran off of electricity, why does only the train have electricity? If players could fix it and drive it, how would they turn it around once it got to the other corner of the map?

You wanna know whats ludicrous?

Trying to maintain and operate a locomotive in a post-apocalyptic scenario with limited resources.

Diesel.

Reverse gear.

I'd agree, but then again, these old diesel powered trains will run 50 years straight with out much maintenance... The train would be like choppers : a pain in the arse to refuel :D

I don't think trains are a good idea, but I would like some kind of draisin... maybe hand-pump or bike type draisins that can be lifted off the rails, and also a slightly more rare diesel-powered draisin that would have to be repaired like a car.

The electric train thing was implying that it would be automated. (which doesn't make sense). Even if it could be fixed, what's the point? You're a big slow target that makes a lot of noise that can either stop or go, and can only travel between two points.

Hmm, I could see a working train being worked in. Just the cab though maybe.

Not a closed circuit/circle, its a branch line with it's terminus North West of Lopatino with the transfer line somewhere west of Kamenka (where it'll probably meet up with another rail system).  It's also a diesel operation (no steam facilities, IE no water towers or coaling depots. Or infrastructure for an electric line, IE no overhead gantry or third rail.)  Trust me, I'm an Engineer Brakeman.

That being said, the only thing stopping players from using the rail system would be on the Devs end of getting the trains working right/realistically, and actually repairing/operating the locomotives.  (Seriously, who here knows how to even turn one ON, raise your hands.  Hell I barely know how to turn the one I actively work with on.)

One thing that would be very interesting is if you had to find a manual to work out the protocols for the locomotive to get it started, and what it needs to get going.

Haven't you seen the hype train just sitting in the middle of cherno?

come on guys we will see trains working in the distant future. :P

Just think of it, Full steam ahead! choo choo! off to the north! oh wait...what is that in the middle of the tracks?

Oh no its a cow! Hit the brakes!

What brakes?

Good luck with that.

Whether the train works or not isn't really a problem, it's the fact that you want your average every day civilian to operate a freight train

Pretty sure Rocket said he wants driving and such to be complicated like in real life. Now I'm no expert on trains, but I'm pretty sure you can't just hop on one and start driving it. I'd imagine it would be fairly easy to screw things up given you have no idea what you're doing. Trains are very heavy, so it takes a while to get them going and to get them to stop, which only makes trains even more inconvenient for a small ( in relation to railroad travel ) map like Chernarus

it's a cool idea but not sure if it would work out too good

Well, I will repeat; Draisins. I really think this should be the only method of rail transportation. If we can get locomotives running, why not Helicopters and BMP's?

Constructing a handcar wouldn't be too difficult given you can find train parts and a few other things + some tools. It would be hand operated!

Pretty much, the SIMPLEST Diesel locos have at least 4 important levers (not counting what you need to do to actually get it running), Engine Brake, Train Brake, Reverser, Throttle. with the brakes and throttle looking very similar.  Oh, and you apply pressure to the Train Brake to release the brakes, and apply pressure to the engine brake to apply the brakes.  Keep that in mind.

search function. people have discussed this several times in previously made threads

my thoughts:

- functional locomotive....no chance

- manual pump 1-2 person rail cart spawn / assembly (meaning find parts for it then build on tracks) ..much more plausible in this gaming environment

My mind boggles at the simplicity of other minds...there's a big difference in the types of steam locos, Oil, Coal, and Wood, with wood being phased out long ago and Oil being the more common.  Oil fired locos cannot burn wood or coal, and wood does not burn as efficiently as coal so you would need a shit tonne more to...you know what I need to leave this thread before I leave my sanity. /jetpack

If there is a train that can be made to move, guaranteed players will work together to get it moving. And then die. And then do it again. Why? Because trains.
