Dylan917 8 Posted January 26, 2014 Okay so usually I am anti KoS, I usually hate coming across another player and before I can even raise my hand to wave or speak down my mic I am shot in the face. Just now I was looting the Balota air field, minding my own business when I bumped into someone, I cautiously asked if he was friendly, he said he was and he was unarmed and so I left him be then asked if he wanted to loot the rest of the air field, he said yes. So we proceed to loot a few barracks, I found him a m4, even gave him all my ammo for it (I prefer my mosin over the m4) and then he says his friend just logged on over near the control tower and wanted to go meet up with him. Obviously this sounded like a ambush, but being a nice friendly guy I said sure, but he had to walk in front as a shield in case his friend tried his chance against me. So we are walking towards the control tower and he's a little in front of me but not too much, his silence should have been a indication too my fate. A m4 or even more than one begins to fire at me from directions unknown to me, an that's how this scumbag ambushed me. Now I understand these things happen in a game like this, but I'm fed up of every person I meet turning out to be scumbag who takes my friendly attitude and betrays it. So from now on I am not trusting anyone, someone says their friend or group is near by, I am either leaving, or taking that person hostage and having their friend or group come unarmed and in my sights. Or just lay waste to the guy. I know this is being a scumbag myself, but I've come to realize in this game you either die over and over again by bandits and scumbags, or you play long enough to see yourself become one.

I love meeting randos while exploring and prefer to talk before shooting, but people are out for blood (and loot) if theyre at any airfield. That said, what I love about this game is that every time I die I know it's cause I messed up (or server reset me lulz). Every death is a learning experience here in Chernwhateverthefuckrussianland. Perfect example, last night me and a buddy were gunned down, our 3rd barely escaped, cause we tried to make contact with a 4person group that didn't respond to any voice comm.... they followed us outta electro and flanked us. I had a shot on the scout they sent but I didn't think he saw me... I was wrong haha lesson learned, amiright? It's easier to just shoot everyone, but it takes actual skill to be able to talk to strangers and make nice or atleast figure out their intentions before lighting them up with lead. I've found that watching streams has shown me a lot of situations that I haven't encountered personally yet. good luck Edited January 26, 2014 by Alogos

Demoth 366 Posted January 26, 2014 I feel the OP's frustration. The only friendly person I've ever met was a young kid who had way worse gear than me at the Balota AF. He never betrayed me, and it amazed me that an 11 year old was more polite and more mature than 99% of the playerbase.Still, the worst story I have was I was looting and sharing loot in the center of the map between the NW airfield and NE airfield. I had met up and teamed up with this guy for almost three hours. We run into a magnum and I said, "You can have it dude". He takes it, loads it and shoots me and steals my food. Now it's KOS unless they're my buddies.
koNtenT 36 Posted January 26, 2014 Try hardcore servers man. I've been playing them ever since they came out and people are alot more mature (not trigger happy and skittish too KoS). Just yesterday I met up with an armed person, told him I'm friendly, gave him ammo for his weapon, and continued to have a nice journey with him to zelengorsk where I eventually lost him :( P.S. Mystery EU man, if you are reading this, I would like to continue our adventure :P
Phantasm (DayZ) 57 Posted January 26, 2014 I laugh every single time I hear someone say "I asked if he was friendly". Do you really expect someone who is not friendly, to say no? Seriously, think about it. The only answer anyone will ever give to that question is yes, because you will either be asking someone who is friendly, and tells the truth, or someone who is deceiving you, and lies. If you can't think beyond "What are the possible outcomes to the question I'm asking", you're survival in a harsh environment such as DayZ will be very limited. Always expect the absolute worst, then when that doesn't happen, you can be pleasantly surprised, but you still never let your guard down.

'Or just lay waste to the guy. Couldn't have said it better myself.
irl-calibre 744 Posted January 26, 2014 op seems to have good DayZ instincts and then doesn't follow them. I think you're more angry with yourself than never wanting to trust anyone ever again..
funky_mish 75 Posted January 26, 2014 I still find plenty of friendly people. I adapt based on my location. If I'm at a military location or in Elektro, I will usually shoot anyone with a gun unless they're at a distance and haven't spotted me, i.e: they're not an immediate threat. Outside of those areas, it's about approaching people properly or avoiding them altogether. As for trusting strangers to loot with or go on journeys with... come on, if you really expect none of them to ever betray you, you are very naive. Besides, that unpredictability is what makes these uneasy alliances interesting.
KingOfTime 267 Posted January 26, 2014 I dont KoS ever, with a few exceptions- Airfields and firehouses, basically any military loot spawn I KoS. People just get too jumpy at military locations...although I did meet 1 cool guy at the NE airfield once. also KoS people killing newspawns. Other then that, I only kill if I am seen, and the other person doesnt make contact through chat, or if when I talk to them I get silence. Not every one is a KoS player. Last week I ran up on 2 separate guys running by cherno near the woodline. Both times I just ran at them, said I was friendly, and kept my mosin up and on them lol, and asked if the needed help(they didnt). Both of them had m4s on their backs and neither of them attempted to pull their gun, nor did the circle around to flank after they left. I only traveled with 1 other guy I met in game. We ended up at the school in electro with multiple m4s and mosins engaging from a distance. The place was filled with newspawns and there were 2 other guys( I think) with mosins with us that we met there. Me, the guys with the mosins, and my friend defended these newspawns until our deaths. It was epic. tl;dr- Airbases/firehouses are deathtraps, dont trust anyone there. ALWAYS make contact without the other guy being able to see you, and if they are silent, blow them away. noblue 27 Posted January 26, 2014 anywhere with military supply spawns is a KOS zone, even if you don't normally KOS as far as trusting other players, don't trust anyone. Try to never put yourself in a situation where another player can kill you if they feel like it. If a player approaches you closely, you have free license to kill them imo

Demoth 366 Posted January 26, 2014 Besides, that unpredictability is what makes these uneasy alliances interesting.I think the problem is that a lot of us have been unlucky and we keep running into nothing but KOS'ers. Those of us who want to make little bands of survivors are a minority and the only way we've managed to get into groups is by meeting up out of the game on forums, rather than dynamically in-game.

I like to think I count well enough and 2 is better than 1. All I am saying is I see why he trusted him since he even found gear for him so why would you kill your ( sorry OP , no offence intended ) milk cow ?? Atomizer 53 Posted January 26, 2014 Military bases and airfields are KOS fields, granted me and my friends have attempted a more friendly approach at balota....after killing a lot of people, but it is pretty much a rule you don't trust anyone in these places. One time, while I was providing overwatch on balota, a friend decided to befriend people in the air control, they were pretty much all bambis for the most part, all up it was my friend and 5 other players in the air control building, eventually, one of them said he was shot at when he was over near the barracks, so my friend decided to take a look and the guy axed him in the back and started axing the other people, there was a bunch of confusion as people didn't know what was going on and so it ended up a full on brawl, until the guy who started it became the victor, however my friend was still alive, just unconscious, the guy with the axe started to try to finish off my friend, by this point I had finally realized what was going on and who my target was(my friend didn't say anything straight away). So I took the shot and killed the axe guy, then made my way up to the air control as quick as I could(while still keeping a look out) and managed to save my friend with bandages and saline, unfortunately everyone else had already logged off/died.Oh and it was a splitting axe, not fire axe, if it was a fire axe, my friend would have died. Yep, pretty much sums up the Standalone. KOS or get KOS'd. Super fun right? Now if they had a real humanity system like the one in my signature, you could have some indication of who was friendly and who was a murdering asshat.
komadose 190 Posted January 26, 2014 someone in here was boasting how he can have good chance of punching an armed player down if he just acts nice... so... yeah, it's KOS or get KOS'd. trust no-one.
Dylan917 8 Posted January 26, 2014 I'm not mad at the game or even the person who did it, fair play he killed me and I lost my loot, I'm not mad about it. It's Day Z another hour playing and I will have gear just as good, you've got to not get attached to gear or the game isn't fun. I've just hardened my approach to players. I'm still always going to try and be nice, but to have trust you have to earn it. As for places like airfields alliances are probably a no go except in certain situations. You play, you earn, you kill, you die. Then you do it again. Thats the fun of it.
