The Hero Guide!

Background

If you've played the mod you will recognize this character as a 'Hero'. Theoreticaly, heros are players who help other survivors in DayZ. In the mod, there was a Humanity system that gives (or takes) humanity points to each player according to their deeds. When your humanity reaches a specific amount your skin will be changed to either hero or bandit and players could determine what is your play-style. DayZ Standalone doesn't have any kind of system like this.

How to be a hero

Since DayZ SA got no Humanity system, being a hero is not measurable and can only be determined by other players. A hero isn't necessarily a guy who sprints towards other players yelling 'Friendly! Need anything? I have a bloodbag!!!1". The current state of DayZ SA features a basic KoS policy where players 95% of the time will shoot you on sight, it means that a hero is a ghost. You must not be seen in order to survive, and when you see someone you should not just kill him.

Only shoot when it's a MUST. Sometimes you will have to shoot someone because he goes to a specific direction, that's right - but they MIGHT risk your life. You should only help others by holding them up. It sounds silly but that's pretty much the truth. If you run towards someone who looks at you he will only need to press space and hit LMB in order to access your loot (For the difficult understanding bambis - they can easily shoot you.). Hold a bambi up, if he turns to you - you shoot. If he pulls a gun out - you shoot. If he runs away - you shoot, because they might just run for cover. A bandit is a guy who kills everyone. A hero is a guy who kills players that put his life in risk.

Once you got your bambi held up, you start talking to him, asking him what he needs - if you see he's really poor than you should take him with you but make sure he is unarmed and watch him at all times.

Reminder - Freshspawns are bandit with no guns, they want to gear-up as quickly as possible. Helping freshspawns on Chernarus coastline is not advisable. Spread around Chernarus.

Who should a hero kill?

As a hero you should help other players you find, but you must also keep an eye for bandits. Bandits are blood-thirsty and only wish to kill others. It somehow makes them feel satisfied by seeing a bleeding player fall on the ground with a bullet inside their body. As a survivor it's the best way to avoid bandits, but as a hero you should kill them, or they will kill others. If you see a guy following a bambi with a gun - his intentions are pretty obvious. He would either shoot down the guy or beocme a sickfuck and feed him with rotten kiwi or disinfectant spray (Oh, and removing his cloths off for the lulz). You should kill the guy.

Once you figured out how to help others and who to kill - procceed to the last step:

How to stay alive as a hero?

Before you go out there helping them bambis, learn how to play without dying. It's nice you're not KoSing others but you should care for yourself too!

After you manage to get your gear straight, spread around Chernarus and don't stay at the coast and it's surrounding areas unless you're really depressed and wish to die. You should become familiar with Chernarus. Find a map or use one online to navigate. Once you know where you're going keep a low profile and don't ever run on roads. You should keep a fine distance of atleast 50 meters from a road, and follow it. This way you are less seen by other players and can see others who runs on the road. Trees are your best immobilized friends, keep yourself in forests as much as possible. If you can minimize your stay in an open field just do it! Bypass and go around with the trees instead of going through a field. If you must go through make sure no one is around - take your time to determine if there's anyone near.

Loot smaller villages and don't go to the NWAF. I would advise to go to the NEAF if you badly need military stuff - just be aware of the hill north-east from the runway since a lot of snipers find it a good spot to sit at.

A small tip regarding the Rify

The Rify is a large crashed ship between Berezino to Svetloyarsk with pretty good loot. Don't go there, period.

(On each server with more than 5 players, atleast 1 player will be at the Rify - #FACT)

You're ready!

Now go and hit Chernarus, show them who's the real FRANKIEonPC among us. Save those poor bambis trying to find their way. Be good! Smile to the world and it will smile back to you! I promise! I think...

I don't agree with holding people up to help them, you may not trust them but they don't trust you either.

Frankie as much as I like his videos, is not a true hero, he will quite happily shoot a guy out of a helicopter just to take it and kill anyone he sees as a potential threat, even if it's just some random guy running toward him oblivious to his presence just in case. Frankie is just a survivor who likes to have a reason or justification to kill somebody.

A true hero risks his life to help others rather than risking their lives to help them.

Watched a guy called RhinoCrunch who claims to be a hero and is one of the most aggressive and controlling people I have ever seen.

A true hero does not bark out orders and tell people what to do, they are the first to lower their weapon, why should you expect anyone to disarm, if you keep a gun to their head?

I engage in dialogue before I trust anyone and expect if the meeting is to be truly peaceful, both parties must lower their weapons and trust must be mutual.

I am extremely careful and have had many positive interactions with players because I am willing to show faith rather than demand it. The pressure of a true show of trust is so tense that it gives you quite an adrenaline rush besides. nobody I chose to trust has betrayed me yet and you can usually tell the outright bandit types the second they open their mouth If they even bother to talk.

1. Hero's shouldn't be ghosts. Hero's need to stand out, walk on the road, and make their presence known. Keeping a low profile is essentially what a bandit/murderer is doing before they ambush. Despite making yourself a target by walking along the roads, that shouldn't make you fret. Hero's should be where the action is and that is the coast, there needs to be more heros on the coast, making their presence known.

2. I don't like the fact that it says you should "hold-up" "bambis", or how you throw around the word "bambi". I think a hero should never hold up a new spawn, only shoot when shot at or a player is making a mad dash to attempt to knock them out. Also, being an ex-bandit, only bandits really use the term bambi loosely, its really derogatory when referring to new guys. If they're new call them new guys, not Bambis.

3. I think it's absurd how you're describing how jumpy of a trigger finger heros' should have. That is a huge no-no when being a hero. Walk with your weapon lowered, and only aim it when making your presence known to an unaware player.

I honestly don't think you know what you're talking about for you to make a hero guide. I honestly would trust a guy whose running at me yelling "Friendly! Need anything? I have a bloodbag!!!1" over you.

Or perhaps he/she wants to hold up the bambi and help him, like your guide describes?

I've been a successful Hero for all of the mod and SA.  I only "held up" one person to help them early on in my time in the mod, and it didn't end well.  They were scared so shitless that they didn't want to have anything to do with me and just begged me to leave them alone.

You shouldn't hold people up, bark orders at them, and strong arm them into helping them while you've got a gun in their face.  You have to give trust to receive it.  It's as simple as making contact in a friendly manner from cover, asking them to respond and then un-equip their weapon (empty hands).  If they aren't ready to do that, be sure to be behind them and tell them to alt + look behind them and show them you are unarmed (empty hands).  I typically always run with gun lowered or empty hands, hell I've been out there helping people with no weapon at all.  Once that ice is broken, most will be friendly and work with you.  It's still good to take precautions i.e. never be standing in front of them, having them sit down, etc, but by no means do you have to hold them up.

In terms of your killing bandits, it's not what a Hero should do.  It's my view (and the view of TMW) that not everyone is true full on blood-thirsty bandit, and is just a scared survivor trying to survive, and has had too many negative experiences with people.  Same goes for bandit skin in the mod; just because they killed some people in the past doesn't mean they should be KoS'ed.  For me, the act of hunting a bandit is banditry, plain and simple.

More on that, in SA it's very difficult to tell what is going on, and as a Hero you shouldn't every jump to the conclusion that someone is just a bandit looking to kill.  You witness a firefight going on, who was the initial aggressor?  You see someone stalking somone else, maybe they're trying to make friendly contact, or avenging their death or the death of their friend.  You see someone handcuffing a player, who's to say they aren't friends testing the mechanic, or someone managed to sneak up on someone that attacked them and managed to handcuff him.

The point is, if you're really going to "be a hero" by helping people doing no harm, you shouldn't take it upon yourself to judge the play style of others and pick and choose who you kill and who you help.  If they show you trust when you give them trust, then you help them.  If they shoot you or make a clear attempt to do so, then you defend yourself.  Everything else is just people surviving in the wasteland.

At the end of the day though, neither game has no true bandit, survivor, or hero, there are just people, all playing the game how they want to.  All those terms are ambiguous and open to interpretation, with this thread being a prime example.  Play how you will, just be aware that not everyone is going to consider your actions as heroic.

It's going to be interesting to see if the developers are going to add in hero mechanics to the game just like in the mod, or if they are going in a completely different direction with the game.

Holding up is the best way to interact with others as of the current playerbase. If a simple survivor will see you he will either attack or run to cover (so he could attack). Let me show you a simple example I've seen yesterday - where a guy wants to give another guy some food for his battary.

He did not hold him up and just kept talking to him - messing with his inventory. Result -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSRN-tqtMXM#t=0

This guy is an idiot. He is running towards freshspawns asking for their battaries as he gives them some food and drink. He is not holding them up either. What the fuck did you expect?

As for those who think a hero should risk his life - RIGHT.

It's true a player should never get attached to his gear but it doesn't mean character death is just simple. Never risk your life for others - survival of the fittest. If you've ever watched Hunger Games you'll see Katty (or whatever her name was) never risked her life as she did help others.

If you see a guy running in the road, pull him to the forest nearby (if there's any). 2 players interacting with eachother in the middle of the road is a time bomb that could explode any second. Your life are important than the other's but if you can, help them.

To be honest I'll call a hero someone who simply won't shoot at others unless in self defense. But helping other is some kind of a must in the DayZ concept.

Indeed, hero is a hard-to-define term in DayZ Standalone since there is no humanity system. Being a hero in DayZ SA is pretty much a ghost. If you are looking for fame, and want others to know you than you better not be a hero unless you wish to open a youtube channel. You're a ghost. Only show yourself when needed, if needed. Don't expect a guy you just help to immediately open the forums and write down on the general discussions 'A GUY NAMED XXX JUST HELPED ME HE'S AMAZING'. You do not gain anything, you help others.

^^ That's a true hero -_-

In your example video, the guy failed not because he didn't hold them up, but because he lost control of the situation and didn't bail out and look for someone else, he didn't have the cans ready to go, and he just stood there while the fresh spawn ran around.  There was also the issue of the guy that was in the house wasn't the one he met on the road, so there was no initial trust built.

He did the right thing by pulling them in a house, but at that point the both of you sit down on opposite sides of the room, if you see him get up, you get up and dance around the room or leave.  If he pulls his fists out, you can feel free to just bail out and leave him.  The running down the road at them wasn't a big deal since they were clearly unarmed, but should have pulled them aside sooner.

Sure holding people up is the safest way for you to help someone, but I think it doesn't provide the best experience for people in the end, and if you want to show people not to KoS and trust people that want to help them, you shouldn't do it at gunpoint.

I'm not sure what your last paragraph is in reference to, since the previous posts didn't say anything about fame or getting vouches on the forums, but I know that's not my goal.  What they were getting at is they feel you should make your presence in the area on the server known so people can come to you for help.  With no side chat, you can't find people further away as easily, so your presence has to be known through word of mouth on the server.  I personally agree with you on that point, stay hidden and in cover whenever possible, but I'll still ask anyone if they need help.

All I wish to gain by helping others is a chance that I may give someone a positive experience, a chance that someone else gives me a positive experience. I play as a survivor and keep a low profile but when I do interact with people, I always talk first and only shoot when fired at. I object to people calling themselves heroes who run around forcing people to accept help at gunpoint though. I never lower my weapon if someone orders me to, as this usually leads to handcuffs and rotten fruit. If you think you are a hero and you come up to me and try to force me to surrender, it's going to end badly for one of us. I don't surrender to anyone, how the hell am I supposed to know your intentions?

Wouldn't say something to offense you but once you are being forced to surrender you're lucky since the same guy could shoot you while you arent ready for it. Besides the sickfucks with the rotten food, anyone else wouldnt do that for bad intentions. Get your stuff straight... you better put your hands up instead of being shot.

I think the most important characteristic of a Hero is to keep things cool no matter what happens; not to let your behavior be driven by strong emotions, and having constant awareness of what's happening.

Being down-to-earth and expecting nothing in return, but able to cut loose anybody who's not willing to co-operate.

Yep, that's what a hero is.

I don't really agree with people saying Heroes should be out in the open all the time or in (potential) high traffic areas.

A dead hero is no good to anyone. I think there is no "THE hero", but different types of them just as there are different types of bandits. From the (cough stupid cough) KOSer to the semi-nice-guy-robbin-hoo- ... you get the f'in picture. Likewise, others can be very nice up, others could nearly act like a (classic) bandit and restrain or order people before they give any help, as some sort of safety measure.

Bottom line is your intention, not your playstyle. Even if that may assist or hinder you greatly in achieving your intentions or showing them to others.

Any hero-like player deserves at least some respect for having certain "balls", as some would say. Keeping calm is probably among those. Guess I became one in some way. No, no medal please. 'tis just mah duty.
