Today I learnt that there can be zombies in the wilderness. (story)

Well, the sun had just gone down on the server I played on, I don't much like playing during the night (since I'm a coward), I was in the wilderness though, and had a head-light, I saw a couple of isolated houses on my map and figured I'd might just go check them out. I checked one house out with no problems, and started moving towards another one several hundred meters away (if I read the map right), I was in the middle of a pine-forest, now, an empty pine-forest is creepy enough, especially with a head-light shining on the trees (if you haven't tried this IRL, I recommend it, if you want to be a bit scared that is).

Anyway, I suddenly spot a zombie standing by the road, I look around but he seems to be all alone. Strange I thought, haven't seen much zombies at all in the middle of the wilderness like this, just one time before during my 23 hours in the alpha. I figured I'd put him out of his misery with a magnum, which was of course a really bad idea, since I had a bloody fire-axe and could have taken him out quietly. Just as I had shot him I heard sounds of a zombie, I first thought it was the one I shot, and that the sound was lagging, then I saw movement to my right, I turned and saw another zombie running right towards me, I shot that one aswell and heard another zombie sound, right behind me, and another one coming from where the second one came. Luckily these were the only zombies, and I had enough ammo for them, but man, was I surprised and scared shitless, the head-light doesn't really provide much light, just enough to see their hungry faces coming towards me, haha.

Do zombies spawn more often during the nighttime or was this just a pure (and evil) coincidence?

Be careful out there people, you aren't save.

Had a similar situation yesterday. My wing-man and I were heading east from around the NWAF all the way to Gorska  to rendezvous with the rest of our gaming group, of course we avoid roads like the plague and hike across the wilderness.  I end up getting separated and find myself being chased by 5 zombies while having lag/rubberbanding issues that made axing them a pain in the ass. My buddy ended up killed 3 of them and I was able to put the other 2 down.

I did wonder why there were so many zeds in the middle of nowhere, if I had the time I would have liked to search the area and try and find a source like an infected survivor camp.

Not sure if intentional or not, I was pretty much in the middle of nowhere and found some Z's just chillin in the woods. No houses or anything around for probably 600m (at least) in all directions. I don't believe the deer stands spawn them yet either, so it was a bit strange.

I once control, alt, deleted to check the dayZ map in the middle of nowhere but close to a road and when I came back, (having taken a quick pee), I was unconscious with a zombie having a nibble on me.

A couple of days ago I went into the top room of the NEAF and found 2 standing in the room with the door closed. Not sure if someone lured them in and logged or it was a bug.

You never can tell. I hope they do randomly spawn in the wilderness, you should never feel safe wherever you are.

the deer stands I don't believe have chances to spawn them, but you might see other structures in the wilderness, some look like a feeding trough and others a large chicken coop or something. These are probably grouped into the same structure type as other buildings in towns and therefore have a chance to spawn some. There are other cases where you might find a large mob of them in the wilderness like this because another player led them there but lost LoS and they just stopped. Remember, as of yet the zombies do not respawn until the server resets so if you lead them into a forest, they will stay there until a reset or another player finds them.

Probably a fresh spawn just running from them and lost them in the woods, I once corralled about 6 in a town  and left them somewhere in the woods (no gear just my shrt and jeans as someone stole my shoes) .

was jogging cross country, at night, coming from the northwest to rendezvous with the group near elektro and was surprised to find myself in the middle of a forest with at least a dozen zombies slowly walking through the woods to the west. luckily it was dark and i managed to get into a crouch before i was spotted, but i had to navigate through the horde to get past them.

Was one of the best experiences i had to this day;

Alone in the woods,

hear a moan,

do a 360 scan to

find dozens of zombies all around you.

When I made my way through the residentials in chern I got greeted by a pack of them. 3 waves of 5-6 at a time, don't know that happened, but I decided to use my axe instead of my gun for maximum zombie destruction.

Do you think they might have been pulled there by a fleeing player? Not sure once you get out of site of the zombie do they spawn away and back to their original location or do they just hang out where they lost sight of you?

I remember when I first started playing the game; I had lost a zombie chasing me and was looking at a map and next thing I know I was being attacked by a zombie. I remember I was by a water source (a pond I believe and not by any structures), so that could be why there was a zombie or I really never lost the original one that was chasing me.

i dont think so for three reasons:

  • i was no where near any towns - nearest houses were a 10 minute jog from my location. i was in a deeply wooded area.
  • there where over 10 of them ; anyone creating a zombie train would be hard-pressed to herd that many of them and get them that far from towns without losing agro.
  • they were spread out over a 100m radius (in a rough circle) and all slowly walking in the same direction (west) - a zombie train would more likely be a single-file zombie pileup.

this looked scripted, not player induced.

eitherway, it was a really cool encounter and i hope to see more of it.
