What animations would add depth and immersion to the game?

Want to trawl for ideas for animations that would bring you more into the world of DayZ and add functionality.

For me:

- reaching out and picking up animation for looting.

- opening door animation (similar I guess to climbing ladders in that you are temporarily 'locked' to the environment), although would love to be able to aim down sights/shoot with free hand. Largely because I'm sick of doors and gaits pushing me around.

- adding and removing attachments - a generic animation similar to reloading that requires gun in hand. I'm not down with the instant attachment changes that are currently implemented.

- more functional hand signs as discussed in other threads - for me a "let's trade" hand sign and tactical gestures might be a good addition.

Keen on more ideas and critical feedback.

Add pointing 90 degres forward.

 

Very good to show wich way players should go when some one ask for direction.

Would also add:

- Taking off backpack to use contents - have the back pack still part of the avatar, but to access (and see) the contents need to either remove and put in front of you, or (for smaller packs) bring it round to the side of you.

 

Also, accessing gear from the backpack should be slower than from pockets, holsters etc, but adding in this type of animation would amend that...

All what you do should shown as animation.

I can´t imagin something that should have no animation. Adding silencer, take something out of the pocket, reading a book/map etc.

 

The ladder animation is one of the most importants. It looks shit in videos. :P

I agree to an extent but as a non-programmer/game-designer I don't know how plausible that is in terms of implementation. Edited by Roshi

As has been said, anything that CAN  have an animation, SHOULD have an animation, with appropriate time to execute it too, some longer/shorter than others. Anything 'instant' is just very immersion breaking for me personally. Roshi's idea being one i've wanted right from the start. Ideally, anything stored in the backpack can't be hotbarred, only items in pockets etc, meaning you have to actively open your inventory, both showing an animation and perhaps a zipper sound alerting others as to what you're doing.

changing clothing.  Currently its way too instant.  You should be completely vulnerable for several seconds while you change clothes.

We need a removing and attaching weapon attachments animations.

 

And speaking of, why is it oh-so-easy to attach a PU mount to a hex receiver without any tools. The hell is this.

..all environment+ charackter animations.

for example: the sun is blending so the char must protect the eyes with his hand or arm.

same think at hard rain or a storm.

or when you run threw a bush or a tree. leaves are falling and the char use his arms a little against the branches to protect his face. like ezio from assassins creed when he run threw people.

edit: imagine a soldier running under fire. what he do with his face and arms. that looks awesome ;D

 

and please NO Blood fountains. a bloody texture is enough. its much cooler when you see parts of your vest textile flipping around when you get hit. blood fountains are so unreal tournament. they only work in a tarantino movie

Not controlling like a tank in first person view.

 

For an example your guy automatically lowering his weapon if he goes against a wall. Right now if you want to strafe through a doorway or lean through a doorway with rifle up then your guy will get stuck because 1 cm of the barrel hits the door frame.

Honestly I think most of the animations are too clunky and look awful.

Until the animations can look good and seem authentic, I would rather have a bar that fills up slowly that represents the time it takes to do something.

For example, if you wanted to change clothes you drag over a new pair of pants, and instead of you changing instantly a bar would fill up while you hear the sound of clothing rustle.

Or instead of a bar we could have your arms flail around your body?

Either way, it's still early and I can guarantee there is something on the to do list that involves animations.

So I'm not to worried at the moment.

- animation for using the hand-cranked well pumps - currently instantaneous drinking which needs to change. Should bind character to the pump (as with ladders) and use one hand to operate the pump.

I dont want to crawl in prone when i break my leg.

 

I want to limp in the fields with the zombies!

 

also taking off backpacks to look through contents like they did in the last of us. attaching weapons, opening doors. The more animations the better this game will look/feel

If you could only have tabbed items in your jacket or w/e then it would be nice to have a little going in the pocket animation to grab an item..as the menu would not be in front of your view.

Thanks for the input, but not quite what I had in mind personally. I feel adding these kinds of animations detract from the whole depth/immersion thing and would make it more like Fable. I was thinking more along the lines of Farcry 2...

Extra animations, just means more lag and crashing for the game. Whats the point in having a realistic movement when you cant play the game. Im quite happy not having extra animations as long as game plays smoothly. Gamed like Ass. Creed contain alot of trigger animations, which means when character walks into a certain area, animation is automatically played, i dont think this would work well in a game like dayz.

Get a new computer then. Just because ppl dont want to spend money on new stuff I dont want to play DayZ like its from 2005.

I actually think they should, and I'm saying very far down the line (beta once all features are implemented) add a lot of gestures like this. Dean has said that they were going to add a lot more gestures and allow the player to assign whichever ones they find the most useful or desired. (only 12 F keys etc)
