Mosin Variants

Recommended Posts

Just had a thought, currently there exists only the most common Mosin Nagant, the M91/30. However I got to thinking, what about having other variants of the same weapon? Surely some other variants of the same weapon are just as common the original?

First up is the M59 Carbine, a carbine version of the M91/30

A size comparison, between the M59 and M91/30, M91/30 is at the top with the M59 at the bottom

And Second is the Obrez, a sawn off version of the M91/30

Interesting. As much as I love variation, is there really any significant difference in these rifles to warrant new models?

Yep, there is differences, that why carbine was developed. The carbine was more usable in forest and in buildings (though system of collision need to be reworked).

But, even more, these carbines are still in service, by non-departmental guard services in Russia and in Ukraine.

The way I see it, the standard Mosin M91/30 we have currently is loooong when slung on a players back (and with a bayonet it looks like you have a radio antennae sticking out of your back). It defiantly makes it easy to identify by people even at range. It benefits most from long range but is poor in closer engagements. A carbine variant, such as the M59 I posted above or one of the earlier Carbines like the M44 or M38 (of which the M44 had a permanent side folding spike bayonet) with it's smaller profile and better use at close ranges could make it ideal for someone who doesn't want others to know what he's carrying from far off.

Additionally the Obrez could function as a form of advanced crafting and would function as a very powerful "pistol" class weapon that takes the 7,62x54mmR rounds, it would have poor range, high recoil and be extremely loud, not to mention not being able to attach anything to it.

They should make an "Obrez" - as long as they do it properly - no accuracy (bullet won't be stabilized and will tumble in midair, worse than a musket ball), no usable sights, heavy, large, huge flash, terrible ballistics (bullet is reduced to about 1/2 velocity, 1/4 energy)... would probably make a nasty wound at short range due to the bullet keyholing but that's about it.

In short, players should always want to dump their "Obrez" for the first real pistol they find. You wouldn't want one if you had access to a .357 Magnum or a high-capacity .45 with ammunition, they are more effective weapons. Should be the same in-game.

Additionally i see here some variability in playstyle. Beside the dimension, the carbine have less weight (that might be important in future), reloading of a cartridge must be somewhat faster, than on current sniper variant of Mosin-Nagant (due straight grip bolt), also reloading of a clip must be a little faster, because on a carbine there is no intervening riflescope.

Also, if in future we see a butt stroke, then in relative size of the damage (by one hit) i suggest something so -
from full-size Mosin - 2.0,
from carbine and (possible)SKS - 1.9,
from wood butt AK-74 -  1.7,
from folding butt AK-74 and from M4  - 1.5.
