How Health Regen Works

Recommended Posts

So I have been playing this game for a while now (Dayz Standalone) and have yet to regenerate health. Once I get injured and my screen desaturates (goes gray), my character stays like that indefinitely (or till I eventually die).

I am aware that the way it is intended to work is if you are "healthy", i.e. not hungry, thirsty, bleeding or sick, you will begin to slowly regenerate health. However, I do not believe it is working currently. I have eaten and drank till my character was neither hungry nor thirsty AND the message shows up at the bottom saying 'I feel very full'. Yet even then, and while even standing still for long periods of time, my health does not regenerate; my character continues making pained noises and my screen remains desaturated.

Anybody know what's going on here? Is it bugged, or am I simply doing something wrong?

Also, regarding saline injections to restore your health, can you apply it to yourself? Because I have had everything imaginable, saline bag, IV starter kit, needle, etc. etc. and been unable to. Do I need a friend to administer it?

If anyone could answer any of these questions, I, and I'm sure many others, would greatly appreciate it!

I understand that this is merely an alpha, I just don't get why the in-game mechanics have to be so opaque. A menu-based page of tips/explanations would be incredibly helpful...

Thanks!

Someone suggested that you have to be full on food and drink for 20 minutes before you start healing/healthy.

That would be a real shame, it's not much fun playing on gray-screen. I have never understood why some developers choose to implement that function in their games. There are a variety of ways to let the player know they are injured/hungry/thirsty or otherwise 'afflicted' WITHOUT ruining the looks of the game. The game is quite beautiful normally, shit in black-and-white.

It is working and you don't have to be full for 20minutes, you just have to eat / drink enough. The amount of food and drinks you need is absurd, but it is working.

That is because your wounds are dirty. Clean them with alcohol.

How do i know? When your character makes grunting noises, it means just that. It doesn't show as a sick indicator or anything. Only AFTER you have applied the alcohol.

when you have reached the requirements (water and energy) then you should see the healing or healthy status message in the inventory screen after some time. if it doesnt appear despite full energy/water, then its an isolated bug as it works pretty much for everyone else.

see this thread for indepth explanation of the mechanic: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/159251-merinos-in-depth-video-guides-updated-jan-7th-how-much-do-i-really-have-to-eat-and-drink/

Stop eating & drinking after the "you're full message."

And the healthy indicator doesn't come if you only drink. You need to eat also.

(just realized that you mentioned drinking & eating. my bad.)

thats because you suffer from a compulsive overeating disorder..

Because you puked all the food and liquids you just consumed on the ground. Stop when you get the full message. The 20 min wait is because you must digest the food and liquids and convert them to energy.

I think the gray vision long after healing is a bug.

Press Esc--> Config --> Video and then close and go back to game. This makes the vision go back to normal again if you are properly healed.

At least this worked for me a couple of times.

You body can store 4-5000 units of liquids(water) and 20000 units of energy(food), your stomach can only hold 4-5000 units of food/water. If you fill lots of food and water in your stomach and ignore the warnings about being stuffed, you'll throw up and be worse off, even sick.

So you have to eat and drink lots, but still make sure you don't stuff yourself. If you do this, you'll be healthy soon enough.

It works, just the "Healthy and Healing Status" that should show up in your inventory screen is bugged and is not showing up.

It does in fact show up.

It's just very hard to explain it to a person who hasn't seen the indicator pop up yet.

Just eat & drink enough, not too much. It will eventually come. I usually manage to get my character to healthy in like 5 to 10 minutes into the game.

For me, the healing mechanics in this game are the only thing turning me off from it. I love realism, but at some point as a game developer you have to recognize that people play to have fun, and it's no fun if you have to eat and drink enough to feed a small village, repeatedly, and wait a few hours, just to heal your character.

And why do developers still think black-and-white screen is a good idea? There are other ways to indicate to the player that they are injured/hungry/thirsty/tired/sick without desaturating their screen and effectively further gimping them when they are already in dire straits. Not to mention you are making your normally beautiful-looking game look like garbage when you take the color away.

tl;dr - I DON'T WANT TO PLAY THE WHOLE TIME IN FUCKING GRAY SCREEN! Thank you.

The main reason why there are things like bluriness, desauration, grunting noises, and things your character is saying/feeling, is because Dean wants the game to be more immersive, rather then have players rely on a bunch of health and status bars.  It adds a bit of realism to the game and I enjoy it over health bars, too.

The reason why food/water doesn't immediately give you the healthy status is again for immersion/realism, it takes time to digest.  When you clean your wounds, it takes about 5 minutes to pass before you get green text saying "your wounds are clean".

There might be an issue with 'sick' overwriting the healthy status, if you feel like you should have the status, getting hit by a zombie so you force the game to check to see at what rate you should be healing is performed, is one way to update it.  If you have desaturation/bluriness then you're definitely not at 100%.

And to answer your other question, no, there is no way to give yourself a bloodbag or saline bag.  The only way for a solo player to get blood back is through regeneration.

Ok here is my experience and the experience with the folks Im tagging along.

The health regeneration does not work as we see... or it is server sided... I am saying this because no server in which we have played so far made me or our mates regenerate health after health loss...

To the question to administer saline... Well you need a friend to do that for you... and so far the saline bag is the only solution to get some health back as I see... or you take some blood from your friend and give him back... dunno it works to a degree as I see (its a bug I think coz someone should not get better after taken blood and given the same blood back, you actually don't gain anything at all)

Hey, i just watched the vids on the health system and it helped me a lot. What i took from it is that there are 3 things to fill....stomach, energy and water. You can fill your stomach but then that takes time to filter into both the energy and water bars.

You have to have big stores of both energy and water to regenerate hp.

So, put simply, its better to be getting i am stuffed messages and eat/drink when they stop. Apposed to eating and drinking when you get a message that says your hungry :)

When you get to 'healthy', it's relatively easy to stay there too with regular eating and drinking, I'm finding.

You must use alcohol to get your wounds clean otherwise your health will not regenerate.

To reach healthy/healing status it takes a few stomach cycles worth of non-stop eating and drinking.

Fresh bag of rice and a couple canteens helps a lot.  Also making sure you don't burn energy in the process (by not moving at all).

You must be at a certain energy and hydration level in order to regenerate blood.  When your blood is full, you will regenerate health.

Watch the video I linked on the first page for a better explanation with graphs.
