DayZ Standalone - First Thoughts and Feelings

Thread - Harrison Johnstone (Steam - Peacemaker)

So today I finally got around to purchasing DayZ after watching many "frankieonpcin1080p" videos showing his heroic badassery traversing the wastelands and cities of Chernarus in what is to be my favourite mod and possibly favorite game ever, DayZ.

To begin my story I'll start from the very start of my journey after I fiddled with the controls. Originally I spawned in the southeast corner of the map, I'd seen it before in many YouTube videos previously but I'd never experienced it like this. Bare and desolate, I'd never thought it would be so real. Scavenging was the first thing I got around to after learning how to run and asking myself why my character was so damn thirsty all the time. I looted a couple of buildings, found a shirt and pants and a soft drink and moved on. Later I came across a building with a Saline drip so I picked that up too.

In my infinite noobish wisdom I then decided to climb up the nearest mountain thinking that I might be able to get a vantage point to have a look around but all of a sudden I see I'm being tailed by three zombies! I hadn't even seen one at that point and suddenly there was three! I realised that you can't run up hills at this point, especially when I was carrying a fire extinguisher which I had recently acquired. So I dropped that and sprinted away finally losing them. All I had on me was the Saline drip, 2 tins of tuna and a wrench (absolutely useless). I continued on up the hill until I came across a town.

Like a young gazelle with a seriously underdeveloped brain, I stupidly sprint into the nearest shed in search of something valuable and I came across a pristine apple! A piece of fruit! I'm not even a big fan of apples but I was pretty excited. Then I heard a distinct groan and turn to see a zombie flailing like a diseased baboon that had swallowed a live kangaroo roughly two steps away. So I ran, I ran so far away (80's reference) and went into a house to hide. Then the zombie glitched through a wall and slapped me so hard I magically appeared back outside. I pull out my wrench and wail on the zombie with every click I could muster but only to realise that the blood spilling everywhere was mine and in fact I had done no damage at all to the zombie who had just killed the hour I spent sprinting across the country side with a couple of swipes. Unconscious. Dead. Quit.

I enter a new server almost immediately with around 18 players in it and begin from the same spot. This time I run north up the coast to see if there was anything good around there and at this point I came across my first player. He was lying on the highway bleeding tremendously. I ask him if he needs help over voice chat, really trying to be a hero in this situation. I tear off my shirt and make rags out of it to bandage him. After he's all wrapped up I suggest to him (me and my vast experience) that he should probably get off the road and then I move on. I super sprint up the road looting a couple of houses along the way. At this point my character was getting pretty thirsty so I stop in a smallish town to find water. Here I ran into my 5th zombie. The Zed wouldn't leave me alone until I had run ages away. But whilst I was running I found a well, but I had to abandon it.

I continue up the road, thirst meter in the brown zone, running with the occasional white flicker across the screen. The longer I ran the more intense it became. I passed a gas station but couldn't loot it due to the presence of 2 zombies so I moved on again. I pass a small shack near a creek but at this point I wasn't aware I could drink creek water so I moved on. Later on I came to a large town with a factory type building centrally located. Firstly I went to the shore to the large sheds which I had noticed usually seem to hold decent gear in and I found a yellow wet weather coat (life saver later on) and a wood splitting axe. I moved back into town on my way to the factory.

I was looting building after building along the way when I came across my second player interaction but this time they weren't AFK. He had recently spawned and had essentially nothing on him and I had stumbled upon him with axe in hand. My first words to him were "please don't kill me". He laughed, said he was friendly and asked if I wanted to team up. I said alright as the I shook the fear of death off of myself. He said we should go to Elektro to find some decent loot and backpacks so we headed off sprinting down the road I had come from. On the way I found a dead player with a backpack so I took that and we were on our way. We sprinted past the creek eventually and this time I had a drink thanks to some friendly "pro tips". Then we kept on sprinting.

Later on we found the player I had bandaged earlier, still lying there, not bleeding but peaceful and still alive. We kept on going down to Elektro. I asked if his friends were in the same server and he told me they were just outside of Elektro. We came upon the the town I had spawned in as we ran down the highway. I spotted another player running towards us in the distance so I kept watch as my new friend looted buildings for supplies and weapons. I lost the other player jumping over a fence so we kept on running down the road.

Suddenly another player sprung upon us with an M4 and we realised we were monumentally screwed. After a couple of moments silence as we prayed to the Chernarus Gods for protection he said he was "friendly" in a pleasant English accent and stood with us on the road. Out of nowhere another player with an M4 came up behind us but he turned out to be a friend of our new gun toting acquaintance. The original friendly had taken quite a shine to my yellow wet weather jacket and asked if he could have it. I stood there for a second realising that the jacket was the only valuable thing my friend or I actually had but I decided the jacket was a small price to pay and he probably would have killed us and taken it anyway. So I dropped the jacket  and to my surprise he compensated me with a new shirt. We stood and chatted for a bit before parting ways as my friend and I moved on towards Elektro, towards safety in numbers.

We continued to run towards Elektro until the connection dropped and I had to rejoin, but I finally added my new friend on Steam. I joined a group Skype call with him and his two friends as we increasingly found that in game chat was much too difficult. On the run to Elektro whilst keeping in contact with his friends, my new mate told me that in his last life he had a full arsenal of weapons and ammo to boot but he was killed by a glitchy player with a bad connection. I replied that he had had a tough break and we continued on. We passed the "burnt out hippie van" and the lighthouse as Elektro came into view. We were told to meet his friends at a construction site near a crane on the outskirts of Elektro.

We continued our run looting a medical kit on the way until we finally reached his friends at the yellow crane. I looked at them and indeed they could have destroyed me in a second and taken all I had gathered very easily. But they didn't and I'm glad because they turned out to be great guys. We looted the construction site, I upgraded to a larger backpack and they gave my friend a pistol to defend himself with but we decided this wasn't enough loot so we combat logged and joined a new server.

We all met each other outside and then began looting again. For some reason I headed to the second story and found myself an M4 with two pristine parts. One of my new friends gave me a sixty round clip as well! We looted the rest of the building and then continued through Elektro, producing witty banter and keeping an eye out for bandits and bambis alike. We looted too but didn't find too much of use as we were heading towards the military base and the air strip. At this stage we were armed with a Mosin, two M4s and a revolver.

We continued up to the airstrip warily, occasionally killing the zombies that moved a little faster than the rest. We ran along the fenceline of the airstrip trying to avoid the possibility of sniper fire that would end a good session of looting. We got lucky and managed to have the entire airstrip to ourselves. We looted the place not finding too much and then continued down to the army barracks across the highway.

This time we found a few assault vests, some Magnums and weapon attachments and various bits of ammo. After these two spots had been looted I was advised that I should quit and then join on them in a new server so we could find more loot. We combat logged and joined a new server again but this time whilst looting the tower on the air strip we found another player who could have been a potential bandit but to our surprise he immediately combat logged, never to be seen again.  So we ended up doing this a couple of times until we were all kitted out everyone with a decent primary, food, ammo and clothing. Then we stood on the road for a bit chatting about what we had come across and our plans for when we left and I was told that if I hadn't had any gear on me my first friend would probably have killed me and the others would have too but I turned out to be a surprising noobish ally who helped guide their friend to them and most likely saved his life with a yellow wet weather jacket.

So that was my first journey into DayZ. I hoped you enjoyed the read, feel free to post your own awesome experiences below.

I wish my experience was similar.. Regrettably it wasn't; I spawned in at the southern beaches of Kamenka, chased out by gunfire landing at my ankles almost every time until I reached a reasonably safe distance where I saw another player jogging down the road towards me without shoes, pants or a shirt. He wasn't bleeding but he did talk in chat a few words, his only words, "Kill me please". My first kill and only kill so far is a man who just wanted to die... I've been killed a fair few times already, mostly for approaching players, when all I required was for somebody to administer a saline bag to me and their first instinct was to blow holes in me and take two days worth of loot from my cold dead corpse..

I get the feeling after playing this game for prolonged amounts of time, I'm going to lose all faith in humanity; I'm still looking for someone who's intention is not to scratch their itchy trigger fingers.

the current TDM play style will likely carry on until there's more sand to play with

right now there's not much to do with other people than kill/torment them. later on there will be less killing and more building sand castles :)

Server hopping on low pop servers for loot... you are just ruining your experience.

It was the first time I'd ever played, I had no idea what I was doing :)

Meh, might as well add my story I guess. My very first spawn was at this small barn in the middle of a path. The path went to the left and right, and another went up to what I now know is the general direction of Cherno. I seriously still have no idea where this spawn point is.

To say the least, I got horribly, horribly lost. I knew I needed to find food, water, a backpack and maybe a melee weapon but Holy Puppypad!! I had no idea it would be this intense.

I went up the path that eventually led me to Devil's Castle. So far, not bad, the birds were tweeting, the sun was shining, heck, I felt this wasn't so bad after all. And then I found the castle. Just looking at it, the bird sounds in the background all of a sudden sounded very, very creepy. But little Demo, happy-go-stupid, couldn't care less. No, Sir, I was on a MISSION here! All I could think of was how nice some water and food would be, so up I go.

I never saw the damned Zed until he was ripping into me. So I did what every girl would do in a situation like that: I screamed. Like a nice, girly, RL Scream. And up those gloomy stairs I went. Praying that Mr. Deadhead wouldn't follow me, I carefully managed my way around. Then, once I got to the top, I took a look off the tower.

By Goodness and Gouda, I'll never forget that very first look over the seemingly endless forest. It was beautiful.

Oh, and it was also black and white. Yeah, ya think I knew what to do? Did I tear off my shirt for rags to help stop the bleeding? Pffffrrrt... I didn't even know that was an option.

Then, to my infinite amazement, I hear this dumbass Zed again. "Gnararaarr Harrrdeebarrr". Which probably meant something like "Give me a hand here, Lady, I'm hungry!" I, selfish beast that I am, however, decided to keep my hand and run for it.

Oh, yeah, that's right - I was on top of a tower. Past Tense. While I was sailing towards the ground, I finally did think of taking my shirt off. To use as a parachute. Unfortunately, my fall came to a very abrupt and deadly halt.

Black Screen. You are dead. You don't say????

But alas - the very grim, Grim Reaper had found this totally confused, amazed, shocked, thrilled and paranoid bambi after all.

I just sat there for a while after, trying to digest all the things that had poured themselves onto my poor brain with coldhearted, no-nonsense brashness.

In other words: This is the story on how I got totally and completely hooked on DayZ.

Happy trails!

Thank You SoulFirez :-)

I'd really like to write more stories at some point, I just have to get used to using this forum. I originally thought this thread would contain many users' stories. But it looks like many folks open a separate Topic / Thread for their individual stories.

Did I miss something relating to that? Or is my theory correct? I'd love to have one thread with hundreds of DayZ stories. Written ones, that is. Videos are easy to find on youtube etc.

Happy trails!

Another aussie in the game yeah. welcome. At the moment, don't bother closing doors as zombies go through them and glitch making them harder to kill. everyone just says to find food then head inland, I would suggest heading inland right away, as there is much more food and drinks inland. Petrol stations you can find a map,  For water find wells usually at the back of houses at the edge of towns. Guns are very rare to find in towns but heaps in army bases and airport. Good luck.
