blurhitz 244 Posted January 9, 2014 Cool story and Im starting to feel the same way. I avoided night servers until two nights ago where I finally gave it a shot, and after the initial adjustment period, Its becoming quite fun. I must have been attacked by 8 zombies in a 20 second period while wandering through Cherno last night and I couldnt see each one until it was pouncing in my direction. I could hear more coming, so I just put the axe away and fled. haha Imagine when they get 3 times more zombies on servers! Right now it's easier because of the server issues B) one of the most shocking things is how truly dark it gets when the rest of the world ceases to exist. But every night isn't that dark. In fact the moon can be so bright up there it's hard to sleep some nights. Really? I didn't know the moon does shine that much  people say every night in the wilderness is just pitch dark
Rantanplan 18 Posted January 9, 2014 Not sure whether this is really possible but maybe the gamma tweaking could be handled like this:- In the in-game settings, every time the gamma/contrast/brightness is changed in a special window affected by those changes a random number is displayed that the player has to enter to confirm those values.- the game captures ALT-TAB or any other option that sends the game to the background, and when the player returns to the game he has to perform the same random number check before continueing. That would leave the gamma tweaking to multi-monitor configurations and background tools that would do the adjustments via random key combinations.

Actually I think there are tons of ways to fix this issue, but I can't figure one that at least looks easy to do and saves time for the other alpher stuff
Mdogg2005 447 Posted January 9, 2014 I tried to play on a night time server as a fresh spawn. I entered a house that was next to me, I had a flash light on but it didn't illuminate much. As soon as I heard a zombie, I exited a server. I couldn't. I couldn't fucking do it! I was scared shitless due to the heavy and intense atmosphere the game was giving. I just couldn't. I couldn't even face the window outside the house without expecting someone to pop out of it and gun me down.Lol I know that feel. I did the same thing when I first started. cptgriffiths@hotmail.com 21 Posted January 9, 2014 Reading this gave me chills and memories of playing at night on the mod. How scary it was when you see car headlights coming your way in the pitch black.
Gerandar 212 Posted January 9, 2014 Wow, so many beans! Thanks guys, seems that a lot of you like the night as much as I do... Oh, true, true. That's sad =/ I hope they have a great idea on how to fix it, though.. That would be impossible, but lets just say they do I'll just go into my monitors options and pump it up that way
bfisher 561 Posted January 9, 2014 Reading this gave me chills and memories of playing at night on the mod. How scary it was when you see car headlights coming your way in the pitch black. Or hear a helicopter overhead with it's searchlight. I miss the road flares and chem lights of the Mod. They really did lend an air of creepiness.
irl-calibre 744 Posted January 9, 2014 Love playing at night, couldn't give a shit if others have their gamma turned up to 11 spinal tap stylee! game really needs way more Z's though, I remeber the first time I was chased by a horde in the mod and got cornered in a barn with only a few shots and with each flash all I could see was more and more z's piling into the barn and then "you are dead" have been hooked ever since. Fact you also get a better breed of player playing in the dark imo, I mean jesus its not likle there are NVG's & thermal scopes - still played even when they were in the game.. General Desire 22 Posted January 9, 2014 On an unrelated note, anyone else who thinks a bit of Slenderman when playing DayZ at night? ;)
meshcarver 154 Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) I feel exactly the same as OP about night time and the great emotional feedback you get from playing on a sparsely populated server. This general feeling of aloneness and dread is one of the many reasons I decided to create a map for ARMA3 as I want to explore ways in which to enhance this atmosphere we're talking about- and hopefully one which it'll be possible to play DAYZ on at some point in the future!Good write up OP...“The sky is deep, the sky is dark. The light of the stars is so damn stark. When I look up, I fill with fear, if all we have is what lies here, this lonely world, this troubled place, then cold dead stars and empty space...Well, I see no reason to persevere, no reason to laugh or shed a tear, no reason to sleep and none to wake. No promises to keep and none to make. And so at night I still raise my eyes to study the clear but mysterious skies that arch above us, cold as stone. Are you there God? Are we alone?” ― Dean Koontz, The Book Of Counted Sorrows Edited January 9, 2014 by meshcarver

blurhitz 244 Posted January 10, 2014 Wow in the mod when you see any kind of light source in the distance, the sensation of fear is just awesome. I still remember the mod roadflares in Chernogorsk, they used to build the atmosphere really nice. Not to mention the fireplaces, I REALLY want them to put the fireplaces in the game as soon as possible. Same with the flares and chemlights. Oh and I'd enjoy trying out your ArmA 3 map, meshcarver  About the slender thing, yes, it is often present in DayZ night time. It's a good fear, though. GpB311 236 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) I think I need to download Arma II and the mod already. Im pretty comfortable with the game now and feel like Im missing out on a lot of stuff since the mod is so much further along in that regard. DevilDog (DayZ) 455 Posted January 10, 2014 Not enough people slow down and actually enjoy this world. Too many people just 'play the game', die-loot-kill-loot-die. I played for about a week walking the map and it was so awesome to get to a new town and just walk down main street. Looking for other survivors, all to often finding the residents infected and the non infected paranoid to the point they might as well be infected. Didn't loot houses in case the owners were still living, only stopped at stores and the church. This game has a great atmosphere if you embrace it. Gamma tweaking is dumb. I have mine actually a little lower than suggested and brightness too. If you turn off the clouds and just pretend it is a cloudless night you will be fine. The mod is now about thousands of Epoch servers and nothing more. At least for me, it's not worth going there if you'll never find the original game again. :( This game has a great atmosphere if you embrace it. Too bad only a few do =/ Edited January 10, 2014 by xBlurHitz
Griaumedis 14 Posted January 10, 2014 Hey, how do you tell day and night servers apart in the browser? I kind of want to check out that beached ship, but i want to do it at night :)

GpB311 236 Posted January 10, 2014 Hey, how do you tell day and night servers apart in the browser? I kind of want to check out that beached ship, but i want to do it at night :)Some label themselves as 24/7 day servers, but I usually just go by how many people are on the server. Its not perfect because sometimes a day server just has a low population on it, but thats typically how I go about it...FInd a good ping and then look at populations. libertine 351 Posted January 10, 2014 The gamma exploit needs to be fixed before people can start to play at night seriously. And the lighting system from A3 would be cool...How are they going to fix monitor gamma or gamma from graphics card menu.
floj 393 Posted January 10, 2014 A dark fog effect to restrict view range during the night?
blurhitz 244 Posted January 10, 2014 Hey, how do you tell day and night servers apart in the browser? I kind of want to check out that beached ship, but i want to do it at night :) Usually as I said in the post, night servers have almost no one. I'll give 2 ~ 6 people. Day servers are always way more populated so it's easy to distinguish ;) A dark fog effect to restrict view range during the night? That's actually not a bad idea... it would even increase the tension during night time :o
GpB311 236 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) Id like the fog as long as it was localized to some areas and maybe not every single night...I wouldnt want it to be too much like Silent Hill even though that game did scare the crap out of me back in the day.
