Personally I don't like private hives, I like have the freedom to choose any server and play with different people every time.

 

But what is gonna happen when we get vehicles and tents/houses, ammo crates? Are they going to be persistent over every server?

 

If we have all our stuff on one server then we will end up staying on the same server anyway.

 

So then what really is the point of having a persistent character across servers? I know some of you will say that you had many many cars and camps across different servers, well good for you.

It's a nice idea Rocket, and maybe you have a great way to fix all these issues, but the whole community has brainstormed this and I don't see any amazing ideas.

Obviously if it is a private hive, then you will have to gear/deploy tents etc all over again on that server. Some people want to play on clan servers or whitelisted servers (BMRF for example) where there are admin or peticular server rules. Not really understanding what your arguement is..

The persistent character is a way to minimize loss from a server being shut down or otherwise unavailable. Sure you would lose all of your stored gear and vehicles, but at least you can walk away with the gear you have on your character. 

 

I always liked having multiple servers but it did get confusing from time to time and if they at least minimized server hopping I would be fine with a hive. Private servers do nothing to stop combat logging though since they can just wait or join another server and come back later and still have a all their gear on the original server. If they added a timer to rejoining a server ghosting would not be effective so that fix is fairly easy, the hardest fix is server hopping.

Combat logging solution. Thirty second timer for logout. 

Ghosting solution, two to five minute timeout on rejoining a server. Long enough to make ghosting a bad idea but not long enough to make server crashes or other unexpected reasons for leaving and rejoining a huge burden. 

Server hopping solution...got me there.

I ran a public hive server for the mod, but I agree with you 100%, Mullucka. I would rather play on a public hive server, but the benefits of a public hive are not needed if you find a good private hive server. All I want is vanilla hardcore settings with ninja-like admins who operate as much as possible in the background ("active admins" means annoying to me for the most part).

 

I have never had to wait very long to get into a full server, so that is not a concern of mine.

The public and private hives will basically divide the playerbase, which is a good thing. I'm looking forward to the freedom of running a private server and not interested in wading through posts with ridiculous ideas in the quest of further dumbing down key aspects of the game to appease the few. The public hive discussions will always have complaints, players that are never satisfied, and worst of all, the influence to change things that made the original mod fun to play. On the public hive, I was really hoping the devs would make decisions on all aspects of the game without outside influence aside from bugs and other critical game fixes.

 

If nobody wishes to play on someones private hive, there's always somewhere different to go and something interesting to discover based on an individuals vision of Dayz.

You're completely miscategorizing private hive servers.  Nothing prevents a private hive from having 'default' public hive settings, except completely eliminating the issues of ghosting and server hopping, and drastically reducing performance issues with the public hive, like how long it can take for dropped items to spawn at your feet.

 

While I like the public hive setup for casual and moderate gamers, I'm sure there are many who would prefer a more realistic situation of a private hive - everyone who plays there, earned all their gear there - no exceptions.  It's no different than Counter-Strike servers that tracked progress and had a sense of community a decade ago.

 

If a private hive server permanently goes down, so what?  How is that different than some random death anywhere?  You start over.  If it's full/busy, either wait, which doesn't take that long in 40-player servers, or either start up another character in a private hive as an alternate, or play general public hive anywhere.

 

Just because you don't like the idea, why bash his?  The public hive isn't going away, so you're free to continue playing there while he plays on a private hive at no negative effect to you.

Hetstaine is right, but that only really matters for people that play on those servers. I've played on and ran my own private servers nearly 100% of the time I played the mod. All it took was a week of hackers gone wild and I gave up on the public hive. The combat logging, ghosting and loot hopping are all being worked on with the same fix so that's not really an excuse for wanting a private hive. I want a private hive because it gives a much better sense of community. You have admins that can get rid of hackers/exploiters and it provides, (to me anyway), much more fun. Hunting that one SOB who killed me three or four times over the course of two weeks and finally shooting him in the back of the head with a lee enfield before I took his AS50, (I'm looking at you Turtle). Helping groups of new players and watching them form bandit groups or medic groups, watching that break apart when the entire server goes to war against each other. Fun nights with ATV races through the woods, Hunger Games style hunts around Devil's Castle, too much fun to list. You can't find that when you only run into random people every day. 

 

For the next few months as the game grows, its fun exploring all the new stuff. After a while, once survival becomes much easier, having a solid community to bond with over life and death just makes the game better to me. Just being able to edit the day/night cycle to an 18 hour day so I can play on a local server during the week and get a good mix of day and night and not just all of one or other is huge for me. I would never play on a 24/7 day server as I love night more, but not so much I don't ever want to see the sun.

I don't know where many of you came up with the idea that every private hive had 10,000 vehicles, high end gear, and abusive admins. This is simply not true.

 

As for 24/7 daylight, I'll state my personal experience with it. Nothing kills a server faster than incorporating the day/ night cycle. I had players who were all gung-ho begging for night only to leave after an hour due to boredom & frustration. I'm not saying every server cleared out, but a majority of players clearly didn't care for it after experiencing it first hand. If history is any indication, once the novelty of the night cycle in SA wears off, players will server hop to find a day server instead.

I have to disagree. 10-15 is too long of a wait. If I dislike a server or wish to change to play with friends, this will surely induce frustration.

There doesn't need to be any "amazing ideas."  Rocket already talked about addressing the problem with combat loggers and server hoppers by using a logout timer and damage cooldown, i.e. if you've taken damage within X number of seconds your logout timer increases and your body remains in-game and vulnerable.

I wouldn't play on a public hive. I want a well-administered, whitelisted private hive with a sense of community. I quit playing public hives very early on in DayZmod, and I won't go back once I have a choice about it again. Whether it was a modmod community or a larger private one like BMRF, the experience was much better, if not solely because of the lack of hackers and the punishments for CLing. They also kept out things like thermal vision, NVGs, AS50s, and other ultra-high-end loot that sort of ruined the game in the pubs. The 3rd-party AC stuff helped a lot as well, they improved loot spawns, added new areas to the map (like a NEAF), and generally upgraded the game experience from what was a terrible public hive situation.

 

By all means, the privates were sometimes more "hardcore" than the pubs, so enough with this "100000 vehicles and ALL THE GUNS" rubbish. Besides, if you don't like that, fine, it doesn't affect you since you're committed to the pubs. I played on the more hardcore hives, others certainly chose the lootastic ones. I never felt it affected me that other private hives were committed to different play styles. Better for me also, since I didn't have to deal with those players on my hive. Everyone was happy.

 

Or hate people for wanting choice because they have different tastes from you. Full of yourselves much?

I'm not hating on your wanting to play on a private hive. But, your using a bunch of faults of the MOD to rationalize abandoning the hive in the standalone, when none of those things you mentioned even apply to the standalone.

 

-Lack of hackers: I haven't seen any in standalone. I saw tons in the mod, everyone did.

-Punishment for combat logging: Nothing has been done yet to combat this, at least give them a chance to fail at it before jumping ship.

-No thermals, nvgs, as50, etc: There is none of this in the standalone, does not apply.

-Third party anti-cheat: The whole engine architecture has been changed to make cheating WAY less of a problem in standalone. It's no longer required that we run a script-versus-script anti-cheat system, because they'll just fix the engine when it needs it. Which couldn't be done in the MOD version.

-Loot spawns & new areas: Plenty of new areas and plans for even more have been added to the standalone.

 

Like I said, I'm not hating on your wanting to play how you want. I just think we need to be realistic on what exactly private hives will bring to the game. Because most of the advantages they offered in the MOD simply don't apply anymore.
