The Soviet Connection.

Recommended Posts

So, after playing DayZ for a while I felt something was lacking to the story. There is no set plot of course, but each individual makes their own nonetheless.

I'm all about that shizzle, I enjoy finding out about the past of things. So, I believe the environment is a huge part of what makes DayZ.

Its set in the little post-Soviet republic of Chernarus.

When the mod was created, this proved to be an incredibly popular setting. Why? The idea of it preserves a little of the mystery that western audiences share about the Soviet Union.

So, taking this into account, I believe there should be more of what makes Chernarus, Chernarus.

It gained its independence after 1991, but, since it didn't possess any massive natural resources or anything, its economy didn't hugely develop post-communism, right? And Russia was its biggest market?

So, I believe that there should be a focus on more Soviet/Russian idiosyncrasies in the game. More eastern themed clothing, a huge emphasis on military equipment especially. Why would there be a load of SUV's, M4's, UK equipment etc. in a country that has little link to the West?

Replace the American gasmask with the Soviet PBF 'Gorilla' mask, maybe throw in a GP-5, PMG, GP-6. Why have a UK assault vest or tac vest when stuff like 6B3 armour or rigs and harnesses from 1990's Russia would make more sense? A kevlar helmet? What about the Ssh-68? Or a tankers helmet? Put in AK's, makarov's, stechkins, kiparis', SVD's. Why would there be Humvee's, throw UAZ 69's, 469's, 452's, Gaz 24's, Gaz Tigr's, lada's, zaporozhets etc on that shit.

Why do all this? It makes Chernarus, Chernarus.

It makes the game feel more rustic, you're forced to use equipment left over from the soviet days, which is still very apparent in the buildings.

Plus, it would also make western items much more valuable and sought after.

I know for most who will read this it sounds like utter bullshit, because this kind of experience is not sought. You just want to gear up, get food and survive. And thats fine, thats what DayZ is all about.

But for those who want that little extra background, a little more substance to its story, this is what it needs. If your a fan of the Stalker or Metro franchises, you'll get where I'm at.

If not, look up the things I've listed, and imagine playing with those in the game, everything would feel more authentic to where your character has been stranded. If you want a humvee, and M4 and look like a Navy Seal, theres plenty of other zombie games out there for that.

But if something like this were implemented, that one Humvee that happened to be left by the US embassy that you spent forever searching for and repairing, the DMR that you kept despite no western ammo, and that one western sight for you AK will seem like pure gold.

Just think about it...

Whoa, I was so focused on other things I didn't even realize the "UK assault vest" makes little sense.

One of the things that bothered me in the mod was how you had BAF camouflage clothing, when instead they could have chosen one of the dozens of types of CDF, guerilla, insurgent or Russian camo clothing options.

Chernarus did go through a revolution sometime between the 1930's and 1950's, evident by statues with T-34 tanks and PPSh-41 sub-machineguns (which I think should be in the game, for this reason). I can imagine that if it took place post-world war 2, there would have been a faction backed by NATO which was overthrown by the Soviet-backed new government (hence why Chernarus is mainly Soviet-influenced and their two official languages are Chernarussian [Czech] and Russian). This could result in some interesting (rare) equipment like the G3, Uzi, FN FAL and older M16/AR-15 rifles being placed alongside guns like the Type 56 and Vz. 58 which were heavily provided to conflicts.
Additionally (Dependent upon whether canon or not in the DayZ universe) Chernarus recently suffered an invasion in conflict with two separate guerrilla and insurgent groups alongside their civilian militia, as well as the CDF faction until modernized Russian infantry, MVD and Spetsnaz moved in against the responding USMC/Force Recon, USAF and US Navy invasion. Additionally, the Takistani region was full of arms dealers and on the brink of war at the same period.

If that information is canon in the DayZ universe (I see no reason why not), then that could be a justifiable reason for some rare but high-tech weapons that are only used by the respective groups to appear in a country that would otherwise not have them, i.e.;

- Spetsnaz teams left behind large envoys of equipment, including (very rare) AK-12s, AN-94s, AK-100 series guns as well as AK-74M series guns, in addition to quite a few Bizon sub-machineguns and RPGs.

- USMC soldiers which were killed in high-danger zones could often not be recovered quickly enough before their equipment was stolen, thus resulting in a good number of M4A1, M16A2/M16A4, M39 EMR/M14 DMR (Both were in service in 2009, when the invasion took place), M249, M240 and M60 weapon systems. Obviously ammunition would be sufficiently rare, but this could be an explanation for them if they were to be included.

[edit]

also, don't 'replace' anything, just add new things in. There's no reason for them to remove the items already in the game.

I fully support the author.

I also had some ideas about the atmosphere of the game. In terms of clothes and things.

Wrote in the Russian section

I made sick and contused translation your theme into Russian, if you want, then let down under the spoiler in the hat

Kevlar helmet?

At the end of the Arma campaign there was basically a low level war involving Russian, USMC and Chenerussian (spelling?) factions, with the US and Russia supporting opposing factions. So I think there's a good explanation why Eastern AND Western hardware would be awash in the region, which was the case in the mod as well.

That being said I agree with the author that Eastern equipment should be more prevelant in this fictional Eastern European state. I was absolutely giddy to realize that Mosin Nagant's were modeled instead of ye olde Enfield...

We never know, some people assume that the Mosin will be the only bolt-action old gun in the game, but the Enfield itself would offer different gameplay as it has 10 round magazines over the Mosin's 5. Not saying that the Enfield is worth adding, I'd like some hunting rifles (Maybe an old Springfield) or something.

Absolutely agree with the author. Although I think the perspective should be on civilian gear. It could work like this:

Civilian gear - Common

Weapons include hunting rifles, personal defense weapons and small caliber arms. (+ hunting bows ;))

Backpacks include those already coloured ones in the standalone as well as maybe more like you would find in a camping store.

Food items include like what is already in the standalone/mod like canned goods, snacks, cereal packets etc.

Military gear - Uncommon

Weapons include exclusively Russian/Soviet/Chernarussian weapons and ammo (nothing overpowered).

Backpacks are exclusively Russian/Soviet/Chernarussian.

Food items include things like the MREs in the Mod (food packages/ration packs).

Western Mil/Aid gear - Rare

Weapons includes "throw-away" weapons that are exclusively Western and can only be found at Helicopter Crash sites or other locations and are often dirty, damaged or low on ammunition. One could scavenge attachments from these and place them on their own eastern weapons.

Backpacks are exclusively Western and have a large amount of space/utilities. (eg. a western vest could have a slot that is exclusively for a knife/bayonet and so when equipping that item it is a slightly faster process as you don't have to take it off your weapon/out of your backpack)

Food items include long life items and MRE's as well as cooking equipment and supplies.

Also includes advanced medical equipment.

*Remember this is exclusively western.

Ok guys feel free to add onto anything I've said.

Just my two cents..

Sobaka,

TYS

It kind of bothers me that people here often argue for realism but at the same time get completely upset when someone suggests adding 'overpowered' (this thread uses that word a lot) weapons like an RPG-7 (Explosives), RPK (LMGs/GPMGs) and SVD (Semi-automatic sniper rifles), even though those would be prevalent. Is it seriously a big deal that weapons which could arguably require less-skill than others exist in a game? I'd think that finding any of those types of weapons would be something to strive for, whereas having only civilian guns and maybe an AK or M4 here and there honestly makes it boring, whether realistic or not.

Are the FNX-45 and Colt Python really realistic? No. Are they fun and add necessary variety to the game? Yes. DayZ has always lacked revolvers, and has never really put emphasis on sidearms.

I agree with chaingun, specialist weapons should be available in game, such as the Dragunov and the РПГ-7. However, to counterbalance their 'supovapowa', ammuniton should be extremely rare, in fact more valuable than the weapon itself, because any clan can clear the map in about 2-3 days.

As for a revolver, why not the Nagant M1895? Makes a lot more sense than a Python, and adds the little 'grandfather's gun' touch.

But to be honest I hate the weapons like the Python being there, it's typically American and has no reason to be in Chernarus, and as I said before, if you want the 'all-american .357 caliber supremacy' experience, there are plenty of other games out there to accommodate you.

Regarding TYS' answer, I agree there should be a greater emphasis on civilian hunting and personal defense armament, however military grade should not be too uncommon.

Should they only spawn in military barracks and such, people will get bored of their civilian gear quickly and create bigger meat-grinders at military spawns.

So one must remember that the military was deployed all over Chernarus outside of their barracks when the infection began.

A good way to implement this is to use the vehicles. They should make a different model of the Ural truck other than the one that has been there for an age, and make it searchable, and have the likelihood of finding an AKM or an AK-74. This military Ural should however be uncommon.

Another one would be to put weapons in the lovely 'полиция' cars. Have a high chance of a makarov or a fort-12 somewhere in the car, but also have a low chance of spawning an AKs-74u or another specialised weapon in the boot. That would make checking a cop car worthwhile. Also throw the Uaz-452 on that shit.

Also, a little of topic(and yes, I realise it's in Alpha), but there needs to be greater evidence of an epidemic. Mass graves, barbed wire, checkpoints, medical tents, piles of rotting bodies, dead soldiers, burning cars etc. Not the odd wrecked car every now an then, or an APC left over from the war, but the place should be absolute carnage.

At the moment it's just... empty...

There might be different reasons. Maybe the Soviet (or Russian) army withdrew its troops from Chernarus with all high-level military equipment. Except small arms, like AK-74 and Makarovs. And the army of Chernarus had to buy used Humwees, Unimogs...what else.

Though i want in DayZ more soviet civilian trucks. Just some reliable diesel trucks.

Dumper (or other versions) MAZ 503

ic0ghw.jpg

And GAZ 66-40(41). Especially good in the variant with a KUNG ("a metal or fiberglass roof on the body"). As the mobile base.

there should definitely be a focus on soviet gear but NATO were involved in the outbreak and the US before that explaining the M4s.  The outbreak is set after 2017 (cereal pack dates) so modern equipment (like AK12s) are plausible.

I approve of this thread.

I would guess that "The Father of all Bombs" the ATBIP a.k.a. Авиационная вакуумная бомба повышенной мощности (АВБПМ) would have been used to cleanse areas after the first breakouts. The craters left behind would have become lakes. Ergo: random watering holes in-game would be possible.

No doubt there would be American equipment left behind by the NATO humanitarian forces, but they would tend to be rare.

Considering the presumption that the Infection went global, it would be likely that NATO forces would have withdrawn to fight the infection in their native countries, or simply moved to the West front to the more essential European states.

US military protocol tends to abandon military equipment when they withdraw from a country because it is cheaper and, well, they have money to make more. Depending on the state, they either leave it for the native security forces or destroy it to avoid acquisition by the enemy.

That's during 'normal' wartime...

However this is a possible pandemic, and international interests are key. For the U.S., Chernarus is too close to Russia, so they would mostly adopt the 'scorched earth' policy.

That means destroy or remove everything. Although Russia is far from needing it, the US couldn't let its technology fall into enemy hands.

As for personnel, most would be withdrawn bar perhaps a few to safeguard research into the infection's origins.

Thus, Humvees and the likes would be found, but rare.

It would be likely that, depending on international political relations, the Russian Federation would have moved in to take NATO's place in Chernarus, if they could afford the manpower.

This would probably consist of CBRN units and maybe riot police such as the OMON, who would be better suited than regular armed forces as they are equipped with shields, full body armor suits, and have apt experience with both melee and firearms. This would give reason for modern Russian vehicles such as the Gaz Tigr.

As for the ATBIP idea, I like it, but I'm note sure if the dev's are focused on changing the map in any major way, but perhaps...

Yeah, I'm all for having guns like the M1895, TT-33 and Makarov take over as the 'common' pistols (relative to others). The Python should probably stay, I don't want them to abandon their hard work and I don't think they would anyway, but it should be made rarer once more guns are available. However, .357 caliber ammunition is definitely believable, as is .38 special.

Also, I can imagine that ammunition will be rarer, but guns like the SVD share ammunition with the Mosin-Nagant, which has common ammo. Instead, how about have the magazines for the guns themselves be rare? Obviously you would still be able to chamber single-shots on some guns but if you had a gun that you have no magazine for it may not be helpful.

(That's what would make guns like the Mosin and the SKS [With the default clip] useful, as ammo you find can always be loaded in)

Well why are there M4s, UK vestscand Kevlar Helmet?

My guess on the M4 was that after the Civil War, the CDF adopted NATO standard weapons/equipment , explaining the Hmmvs and vests aswell.

And the helmets. In arma 2 the CDF used them.

But anyway, yes. More eastern equipment is badly needed.

From Arma 2's website, we know Chernarus was part of russia from 1631 to 1917, then the USSR until 1991 when it gained independence. From this its pretty much confirmed the region was involved in WWII, which is the reasoning behind the monuments, ect.

Heres a few things i'de like to see.

Weapons: Ak-74, Akm/Aks, Rpk-74, SVD, Vz.58p/v, Tt-33, Nagant (MUST ADD!!) Makarov/makarov PMM, Cz.52, Stechkin/Ots-33, Toz-18, toz-194, Ks-23, ect.

Equipment:

CDF Uniforms, webbing, ect.

WwII Era soviet uniforms, complete with high-leather boots with pants tucked in.

Russian gas mask

Some war "Bringbacks," like some German uniforms/weapons and some trophies from Afghanistan.

And for a few random things:

Once radios are added, i want to see the Soviet and Chernarussian anthems available.

A large reathed hammer & Sickle on one of the international hotels.

Some old, Soviet poster on a wall somewhere

A few portraits of Stalin/Lenin in houses.

Ect

Good topic op and I like your thinking but one thing I spotted. The gas mask is not American it is a Czech m10m.

I hope they add the PPsH-41. That is my favourite Soviet weapon.

I think the devs could use some ideas from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with this area. Clothing / equipment / weapons....
