Are Zeds on the cutting block?

Recommended Posts

Can we get an ETA on when a jump in zombies numbers may occur? I know it says on going and all, but we really can't get a feeling for how a typical life is going to turn out until we start to have a permanent, on going threat in the world. You also can't really start to tune your loot distribution until zombie numbers are closer to where you want to get them, as it will completely change the way people play, how long it takes them to search an area, where they go to search.

I hope I'm wrong, but I can't help but think the zed numbers may be on the cutting block and that they are currently proving out that people will still play the game without their presence.

They need to make loot respawn first and then think about zombies.

Sure, right here:

More Zombies

Target delivery: Ongoing

We absolutely plan to have more zombies. To cope with the current total dynamic entity count of over 10000 we have had to make a great deal of optimizations. If loot is completely removed, we can easily run 4000 zombies in our debug builds. In the new year we will be optimizing the way we handle dynamic objects (such as loot) a great deal more which should give us significant savings - but the change was considered too risky to be done prior to alpha launch. If we had problems, we would have delayed the project further by months.

I did.

But that quote I gave you is the only thing anybody knows.

The project lead of DayZ made it, do you think some random guy on the forums has a better idea of how development is going?

Zombies add absolutely nothing to the game in dayz.

We might be better off without them and having them replaced with something else.

Mosquitoes.

Now we are talking realism.

Maybe Zebras. Or nothing, and then just call it Day.

My post was meant to reflect that I already read through that information. It just felt really condescending to have you post the information I have already read. No I did not think some random gamer was going to have any more info, but the hope was that a member of the development team might happen to come across the topic and be able to shed some light.

Yeah, many people think that.

That's why we have hundreds of threads identical to this one.

Goodnight.

I want Jumanji sized mosquitoes. Those big fuckers that could carry off weaker players if they felt like it.

Then why would you want them?

If you've already read it then why are you asking for more zombies, you dumb idiot.

Um, what? Have you ever played the DayZ mod? It's substantially different from the SA due to the zombies. The fact that the number of zombies per area is higher in the mod makes you play differently than you do in the SA. I've noticed that the zombies in the SA seem to hit a lot harder than in the mod, and I think that when Rocket adds in the thousand or so zombies per server, that people are going to have to change the way they play. The day they implement 2000+ zombies will be glorious.

Also if they remove zombies I just want wild dogs. DayD. Try out running them.

That is true actually.

Wild...DevilDogs?

wakka wakka

I like the sounds of it. Just throw some beer their way and wait until they're drunk, then they will help you loot.

I would get into trouble if I told you what I was able to trade cope for in Iraq circa 2003

strange id rather more zeds than more loot currently guess it depends what you want to get out of the game ( loot is way to easy as is even though it doesnt respawn the servers restart every 4 hours and again we have a 230 square km map loaded to the brim with loot.)

The problem is that the team aren't magicians trained in the dark arts. There is a limit to what can be rendered on the engine at any one time, not to mention a limit to how much information a server can keep track of. In the mod they skirted these issues by spawning zombies and loot around the players. That way, the server and the engine only had to handle what was near the players and didn't have to run AI on every single zombie on the entire map. But now they want to fill the whole map with zombies and loot, as well as keep track of spawning rates, players, hit detections, ballistics, etc etc. We've all seen the servers choke on what we currently have, so its going to take a lot of time and energy to get these systems working properly. Its not quite as simple as changing a few values in the code, its going to require some major work under the hood.

Just be patient and have faith, they might not be magicians but they sure are talented game makers.
