Light RP, Community Growth, Private Server Discussion

My comrades and I know the hills better than we do our own names! In fact we are nameless, and we kill not for guns, food, or supplies, but for sport.

Server is live!!!!!! 173.199.86.106:2302

The light RP server Katastrophe is up and running. Currently daytime only (9am) and 1st person only. 18+ only and combat loggers will be perma banned (basically banned every time they are seen until steam id bans are in). KOS is fine as long as it's backstory appropriate but I'd rather see more dialogue than just "I'm a murderer" BANG. This is a work in progress. Please feel free to discuss ideas to me or others. We have a teamspeak up for the server as well at ts5.gameservers.com port 9143. Have fun!

Edit: corrected IP address  -  Also that teamspeak WILL be the main teamspeak when it is up and running .. currently it is down until I set it up

Excellent Idea!  Kata is a committed community minded gamer and has collected alot of really great players around him over the years - not to mention fun. I am in.  For sure.

Im looking forward to names being changeable per new spawn... for right now, im SpaceMonkey, in the server though, Im a chick named "Mason"...  Last seen in Zelenogost and accused of murder in Staroye, claims innocence, physical description 5'2", Black Motorcycle helmet, blue backpack, black non-military clothing.  Wanna learn more you gotta track her down... rumored to be unstable and to distrust men, particularly in groups that are armed.  No known companions.

I like this idea - and that you aren't pushing it on the community, just branching off and running with it. Good luck - will try to catch your stream.

Have a community enforced set of rules

If your rules are community enforced, why do you need white-listing so badly?

I thought the RP side of what I'm talking about is abandonment of arbitrary gaming restrictions.

Again, if you plan to have a server free from arbitrary restrictions, why do you need white-listing?

Personally, this is the part that bothers me most. Just seems like a rather thinly veiled excuse to basically slap a "KEEP OUT" sign up for anyone who doesn't conform to your ideas of how people should play which is exactly the opposite of community enforced rules.

It's community enforced, and they're choosing their community by hand. That way, the community will enforce the rules on themselves. If well picked, the admins won't have to do much, and can focus on playing.

And if they pick poorly? Someone who doesn't adhere to their idea of "proper" play? They blacklist them? Kick them permanently from the community?

That's not really community enforced. That's admin enforced. If you "hand pick" the community and just keep weeding out people who don't 100% completely agree with you lock-step and no questions asked, then you might as well just have a set of hard and fast rules and boot people who break them. What's the difference?

RP is great, and community building is admirable, and building long-term relationships and rivalries is cool, but doing so all under the constant watch of the all-seeing eye who threatens at any moment to revoke your white-list status if you step out of line is frankly wretched. That is a very flimsy definition of "community enforced rules."

I'll bite. Normally because I get bored of joining my friends who form a group of 5-10 roving mass-murderers. Aside from having the occassional 'large scale' gunfight on DayZ SA, I do bore of sitting around waiting for some poor schmuck to walk into the Airfield or Military Base. Only to get touched off by our sniper.

So! Biographies you say?

Name: Isabelle "Izii" Gibbson

Prior to the outbreak, Isabelle was part of a military response team tasked with evacuating non-infected. Her convoy having been overrun, she was left behind in the lovely and scenic areas of Chernarus, left to fend for herself. She almost always carries a modest supply of medical equipment. Willing to help those who are obvious raving lunatics. Her goal is to simply survive until some solution arises for the madness that is Day Z.

Fin.

So, not a masterpiece. Though I see your teamspeak is somewhat empty at these current hours. I'll be taking the poise of protecting myself from those who have 'guns raised'. Or those who get within fifty meters with a melee weapon equipped.. pesky ax-murderers, you know?

As much as I hope this idea flourishes, I can only surmise it'll be a rough and rocky start to get this ship out to sea. Let us hope we don't breach the hull as we strive to marshal her bulk through the tide of raging, semi-psychotic tormentors who prefer to keep Day Z as a 'pure' bloodsport. Bleh..

Drama

Jesus Christ, man. Cut the drama. The amount of hyperbole in your post is mind boggling. They have a whitelist, and a set of "community enforced" rules. They are whitelisting so that they can see whether or not someone will actually buy into the server rules, so that the admins don't have to micromanage everyone. If someone makes the effort of coming up with a backstory or characterization of some sort, it shows that they probably won't be killing new spawns for the "lulz".

Definitely not being dramatic, mate. The dude asked for opinions. Sorry mine consisted of something besides greasing up his knob with a fistful of astroglide and pumping away like a rabbit in heat.

Then those are not community enforced rules. Holy shit. Just because I want words to mean the things they're supposed to mean doesn't make me hyperbolic or dramatic. Are the rules enforced by the community, or not? It's an honest question. If there's a white-list in place and anyone who steps out of line is booted, then the people who control the list enforce the rules, not the community. Why is it dramatic to ask for a bit of honesty in this regard?

Name: Michael "Smiley" Valentine

Smiley used to run around with a group of hardcore bandits after the virus hit. Then one day they decided to raid Berezino..... This raid into a family home in which Smiley killed four children caused him to realize what he had become. In that moment of pulling his trigger he remembered.... He remembered the men who entered his home and slaughtered his mother and sister.... he remembered the hatred and fear. In that single moment he turned on his fellow bandits and killed them all. He now suffers from chronic depression and anxiety attacks.

Smiley now roams the countryside trying to help all those he can in order to redeem himself. Thus those who know him refer to him as "Smiley the Friendly Bandit".

So this will be the second time I write this out ... computer crashed after about 5 paragraphs so I will truncate this a bit.  I would be able to explain my position much better in teamspeak than on a forum if you want to talk about some of the finer points.

Let me clarify about "community enforced rules" and what my expectations are in regards to how this will play out.  The community will organically enforce the rules through natural social means.  I will give an example - a player becomes known as a combat logger.  He keeps doing it repeatedly and word trickles down to the majority of the server that he does it.  The people he runs with stop playing with him as much, the community takes on a KOS mentality when he is around and his complaints are generally ignored by all.  This would be how a community deals with annoying actions of a particular individual albeit w/out the KOS part.  No admin had to reprimand, no divine blacklisting or arbitrary ruling from an uninformed third party.  DayZ is a game that gives a large enough sandbox that we can enact this kind of natural behavior modification w/out much effort.  Lets change the example to a large group of lets say 10 people operating out of Cherno.  They have begun to show a rampant disregard for whatever common rp elements we have all come to agree upon, began KOS bambies, being racist or inflammatory in chat - basically trolling the server.  The server perhaps would band together, set aside current character disagreements and purge them from the server repeatedly.  When they apologize or change their behavior they will be allowed to go their own ways, perhaps being told by the larger factions that if they reband and continue they will face similar justice.  Neither I nor the "admins" (of which there actually are none yet) had to intervene.

Onto the main point that I think you have hesitancy about - Whitelists.  Whitelisting is something that currently is not in the game so isnt something that has to be decided on now.  I am open to debate as to whether or not we even need it.  Here are my personal thoughts on whitelisting.  There exists a group of people who solely play the game to troll, enrage, kill, and ruin the fun of every player they run into.  That section of the player base is much larger than I think many of us thought it would be during a buggy alpha.  They tend to play completely against everything many of us value such as combat logging, server hopping for guns, racist/trolling comments in voice coms, and general TDM CoD gaming.  There is nothing cerebral, creative, or long-term about their actions.  They are the antithesis of everything we like about this game.  The key point however is that there are hundreds of server for them and currently none for us.  They have free reign over DayZ.  So what happens when a gamer finally gets sick of it?  They come to the server and perhaps read a thread about our community.  Their first and most important thought is "will they stop these trolls from ruining my gaming experience".  Whitelisting is the way this happens traditionally in DayZ MOD.  Private hives are even further out than whitelisting, I believe, so by saying our community has a goal of stymieing the TDM players from ruining their chosen game experience, our community grows with like minded people who CLEARLY understand that our goals are parallel.

Our community cannot grow from ingame players with a whitelist.  Our community can only grow through those showing interest in mediums outside of the game such as my stream, the forums, or word of mouth (my particular preference).  This requires an action to come FROM the prospective new community member.  This action can then be valued by the community as a whole, such as how they voice their questions, what does their backstory say about them, what are there intents etc.  We can then, as a group, learn a LOT about a person such as their personality, their desires, their intents, their maturity, their creativity and intellect, their long-term goals.  Whoever is working with that prospective member would vouche for them as a future member of our community.  They would be whitelisted and things would progress from there organically within the gaming environment.  No applications, no stamp of approval, no voting.  Let them in and see if they sink or swim.  The vast majority of sinkers would naturally leave if they were not having fun.  The community would deal socially with the small percentage that stay and are unwelcome.

Whitelist is a catch phrase, a historic method of gating a community from "undesirables".  Do I want my community to need this?  ABSOLUTELY NOT.  After mods come into DayZ SA, private hives, advanced server options etc I fully expect whitelisting to be unnecessary.  Currently, Dayz SA needs whitelisting IMO.  It does add many cons as well as pros to the community but the current mix of spawn location, content, and player maturity level almost begs for whitelisting.  There are also many preconceptions about whitelisted servers - they are more professional, have long term goals, increase the depth of the game, create a feeling of community and home - all of which I resonate with and want to be a part of our image.

I have purposefully left out KOS in the majority of this conversation because it is most defintely ALLOWED on the server.  It is not punishable and never will be.  The community will govern how people look on KOSers on their own merits.  If you have a freakin amazing background story, RP out some cool events, and stick to your rationale etc then the serve will WANT to be KOS by you as you bring depth to the game that we crave.  If you run around like a chicken w/ your head cut off, change your mind on every event, have obvious inconsistencies and irrational playstyle then nobody will want to be around you and the community will take actions within the game environment and you most likely will not last long.  Will there be those few individuals that just want to troll?  Sure.  But those instances will be so rare that they should not be the focal point of a community development conversation.

I hope you do not think your opinions are being heard.  I just think you ask for more from the average forum poster in terms of thought and evidence than they are used to so they assume you are trolling or being purposefully inflammatory.

Both of you may need to be prepared for a visit from the Sheriff of Berezino . . .  There is no statute of limitations on murder and just because life is a bit "hectic" currently does not mean law takes a break and justice goes silent...

I think more people enjoy a good RP than either know it or would admit it.  I am a HS teacher and know that one of the best ways to get my students involved in something is to allow them to come to it on their own terms.  They then tend to teach me a lot more about the subject matter that I know as well since they have a fresh outlook and are unbiased.

I might check this out. This sounds like a good server.

We are trying to actively grow it so if you have questions or want to hang out while playing come join us on teamspeak.  TS is for 18+ however.

The Sheriff thinks you might be a potent ally if you ever want to head up towards Berezino and lend a hand towards a common goal.  We currently do not have any medical staff at our two fully stocked hospitals.  Deputy Poodle would love to show you his collection of books which he reserves almost his entire backpack for.

Almost none of us are published writers (though we do have many professors and writers IRL in our community) so never feel like your backstory is inadequate.  Actions speak louder than words.  What kind of hours do you normally game at?  We currently have two teamspeaks.  One is getting taken down on the 17th and the other has yet to be set up.  Most of us are on around 7PM PST and later tho I am sure that more people will joining will have diverse hours.  I guess it is fitting that our start be rough and rocky just like the game.  Better to make mistakes now and learn than never make any and live in ignorance.  Worst case senario I have already made many new friends.

So then why is a group of people who want to play on a private server (when private servers become available) and role play together any better or worse than people who don't want to role play and do their own thing on a public server?  It's just people doing what they want to do in their own way.  Isn't that being human?

All good points, Heinrich. Unfortunately HC and his friends have made a rep for themselves by being trolls in game and here on the forums. A rep that they go out of their way to preserve and enhance. It is unfortunate, because DayZ is more than what they think it is.
